Just finished a week at Poland Spring Resort for an on site conference and I must say that I am a happy camper. The place, while may be "dated" for some, had a charm all it's own. That was provided by the service, staff attitudes, and generally welcoming and relaxing environment. Downsides for some might be the limited breakfast buffet (which was more than enough for me but some folks mentioned it within earshot). Also, no maid service due to the COVID pandemic, although a friend said that in the past they had to bring their own linens (truly). All of a traveler's needs were available through the front desk. Great bar service by the way and PS was located close to everything I needed to see and do. I plan to make this place a stop on an upcoming fall colors trip down the eastern seaboard for a night along the way. read more

The Poland Spring Resort has a LOT of things going for it 1. Lovely grounds for walking 2. Multiple buildings that hold all sorts of history in their walls 3. A devoted, multi generational clientele that have been coming for years 4. A golf course 5. A gameroom, a library, and a card room 6. A counter in the main lobby that makes ice cream sodas and chocolate egg creams for very reasonable prices 7. Themed weekends that include parties and live bands. I was there for their annual New Years Eve and it was awesome!! 8. A bar that offers inexpensive mixed drinks, chips and dip for $2.50, and a wall of celebrity guests This place kind of reminds me of the Catskill resorts, a place that was the shit in its heyday and now continues to run on nostalgia and time gone by. I don't see that as a bad thing, in fact, I think they should build on that even more. How about a Dirty Dancing weekend? How about a "fake" wedding weekend? Attended an event here on 9/11/21. It was a cash bar and staffed with resort employees. And the female bartender working this event was so incredibly rude that we will never step foot in this place again. Absolutely horrific person, nasty attitude and terrible reflection on this resort. The bar wasn't busy, at all, and all we ordered was a Tito's and tonic and Tito's a soda - pretty basic. It was right on par with the event though - so she was at least par for the evening. read more

The grounds are nice. Main Inn smells like musty fabreeze, paper thin walls, cant sleep with the snoring all around me in surround sound. Beds are uncomfortable, pillows are cheap, toilet paper dispensers in the bathrooms are unreachable. It's pretty outside the window, but inside this building the hotel sucks. read more

Couples trip to Maine to enjoy the golf trifecta. The accommodations are in the older Poland Springs Resort. We had rooms on the second floor, king bed is comfortable and room had a sofa and desk. Limited TV channels available. Wi-Fi available. Front desk staff is very friendly and helpful. They provided great recommendations for local food. No personal beers allowed outside your room since lodge has a bar. Popcorn and ice cream for purchase a front desk. The golf course is par 71. There is a variety of elevation changes and narrow fairways at times. This is a loop Course and no return to clubhouse before finishing. read more

So glad we stumbled into this gem of a place! I was a little hesitant having read some of the reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor stating that the place was dated and "creepy." Dated, yes, but in a charming kind of way. Creepy, definitely not! We stayed in the "pet-friendly" part of the Presidential Inn. The porch and foyer offer a glimpse of what the resort must have been like in its heyday (early 1900s). Beyond the foyer, things are a little dated-- Think fake paneling, circa 1980s, throughout the WHOLE sprawling building! But this place is lovingly maintained, and I have not found cleaner accommodations anywhere over the past week traveling from PA to ME (including places that charged double the price). Sure the room was a little small, and there was a cathode ray tube TV, but who goes on vacation to watch TV? Included in our stay was an awesome breakfast buffet with some of the best quiche I've ever eaten, along with pancakes, sausage, bagels, muffins, coffee​, juice, etc. And homemade blueberry scones! The dining room is straight out of the movie "Dirty Dancing." Most days they even have musicians or some kind of entertainment. If you can appreciate stepping back in time, you will love this place! Read up on the resort's history (booklets provided in each room) and take time to explore the buildings and grounds on the property, and you won't be disappointed! read more

What a wonderful step back in time! We loved our overnight at the resort! Our room was very large with an extremely comfy bed and great view! The grounds are lovely and well cared for. We enjoyed the homey breakfast buffet in the dining room, French Toast was our fave! We explored the grounds and the springs which are truly something to see. I was so disappointed. We booked four nights last week. Lodge was like an old motel. Needs updating. Shower wouldn't hold temp. In the shower the water would get very hot all of a sudden. Pros: decently priced, very friendly and competent staff. Cons: Room was incredibly outdated, and not very clean. - - I booked a room at the Lodge for my friend who was about to be married (I say was because, well, while this is being written before her wedding, it may be read after). This was to be her Bachelorette weekend trip. There was a problem with the online booking, which the staff acknowledged and were gracious about. They did not have rooms at the Lodge with two bedrooms, but they did at the Presidential building. It had been a very long trip for us, so we agreed. Externally, the building IS old, but relatively well- maintained, with the exception of the fire escape, as the last few steps were overgrown with weeds and grass. Still, this wasn't too bad, until I realized that the parking was in a gravel lot that was too small to accommodate guest parking for such a large building. Still, we stayed, as the room was paid for. Upon walking into the lobby, there was evidence of an 'accident' of either a small child or a dog, which was not picked up and smelled pretty awful. The stairs have doors separating the flights, and are reminiscent of an old-time insane asylum. And then we come to the rooms. Granted, the room did not smell, and the bathroom was clean, with no traces of mold on the curtain or the tub, and even the toilet looked clean. There was dust on the top of the ceiling fan, and on top of the a/c unit, as well as the picture and mirror frames. The duvet covers smelled clean, but were straight out of the 70s, and the sheets were crisp and white, free of any stains or signs of bed bugs. As far as the mattresses, they were both hard and lumpy, very uncomfortable. The pillows were very flat. The ceiling was sagging in several places. Overall, the stay was not the worst I have ever had, but it was certainly not the best. I would likely not stay again, at least in the Presidential building. read more

Great spot for a getaway with the family! Many amenities. The staff is wonderful and kind. Very much on top of everything. Beautiful calm lake for activities down the road. Two great resturants. Pool was very clean. We don't play golf,however there was a ton of golfing happening around us. We had a great time having a camp fire,playing lawn games, kyaking ,paddle boarding etc. ,mini golf and the driving range . The meals at Cindy's Dickside and Hilltop were great ! If you're a hotel snob go elsewhere. This place is a great value for what you get in return. So much beauty and history here. Rooms are simple-yes they don't have 50 inch flatscreens. If you are going there to hang around in your room it's not the place for you. The golf is great the grounds are beautiful the staff is super friendly and the sunsets are amazing. My first trip to Maine for a much needed vacation with my wife in late August. The resort is dated, like something out of the '70s. I think that's why I liked it so much. Rooms are clean, maid service excellent. We were in the "Ronald Reagan" room at the Presidential Inn. Breakfast & Dinner are included with the cost of your room whether you choose to eat there or not. Food is middle of the road fare, buffet style. There is entertainment every night for no additional fee for 6 of the 7 nights we stayed. All resort staff was pleasant. Bar opens at 4pm. Golf course appears immaculate as well as the pool. Had the best & most relaxing vacation in a long time. Cannot wait to go back !!!!! read more

Stopped in for the summer music concert series. This is a beautiful location with an awesome sunset. Spectacular. We ate the buffet in the resort dining room. Good home cooked food, not gourmet, and as much as you could eat. Mac and cheese, baked chicken, baked beans, salads, breads, roast pork. Very satisfying. read more

A large group of us return yearly for a long weekend of golf and laughs. Prior to the pandemic, our room rate included a delicious breakfast and dinner buffet with a chicken salad sandwich available on the drink cart during our round. The first year we returned post pandemic we understood the precautions. No buffet as they couldn't control social distancing. Now we have returned the 2nd year post pandemic. Normal room price but the breakfast buffet will cost you $13.50. No dinner buffet and the 2 restaurant options are owned /operated by the resort. At Cindys Dockside restaurant $26 will buy you a delicious baked scallop dish ruined by a 1/2 ear of corn previously frozen. That delicious chicken salad ? We were told it was discontinued on the course but you can buy it at the Dockside restaurant. We will probably return but the shine of the weekend is definitely diminished by the cutting of corners for what appears to be sheer profit. read more

Do not come to Poland Spring Resort expecting lavish accommodations, modern furnishings, and the usual room efficiencies...this place is totally Old School and the sooner you get past that, the sooner you will actually embrace what makes this place so special. What you can expect is friendly and accommodating service, absolutely beautiful grounds with killer views, clean rooms and facilities, lots of history, and food that tastes like your Grandmother is in the kitchen cooking it - delicious! I recently planned a destination wedding here for my son (he married a Mainer) and had to do all the arrangements blindly and completely on faith since I live in San Diego. We had guests coming in from all over the US, so I had a fair amount of anxiety about how things could seriously go wrong and ruin a very special event. I travel a lot for work and typically stay in very nice hotels with lots of amenities. When I first arrived at Poland Spring Resort, I thought "uh-oh..." there were no elevators, no phones in the rooms, dated furniture and décor, WI-FI only in the lobby, and an obvious 70+ age group demographic. But in the end, all these factors actually became part of the charm of Poland Spring Resort. In all, we had a large luncheon at Cyndi's Dockside, Rehearsal Dinner at Mel's Hilltop, Wedding Ceremony in the All Soul's Chapel (a stunning wedding venue), Cocktail Hour in the Maine State Inn Lobby (with a Bluegrass Band), Reception in the Maine State Inn Dining Hall, and an After Party at Mel's Hilltop. That's a lot to coordinate, and I couldn't have done it without the help of an amazing woman, Cyndi Robbins - the owner of Poland Spring Resort. Every request along the way was met with an accommodating attitude and can-do approach. She understood my anxiety and did what she could to put my mind at ease. All of the events listed above went smoothly, and they carried out the Bride & Groom's vision beautifully (the only hitch was a rogue DJ) - especially with the ceremony and reception. I would highly recommend Poland Spring Resort for a vacation or special event...and I definitely plan to return someday soon! read more

Let me start this review by saying that I am reviewing this property from the perspective of a vacation destination as this is what the resort bills itself as. If I were driving by on my way somewhere else and just needed a place to stay for the night, it would be fine. If I booked it for an anniversary weekend (yep, I should have done more research first), I would be (and am) sorely disappointed. The resort has figured out curb appeal. Their sign out front is lovely as is the sweeping drive up to the Maine Inn and the wide open views over the golf course. It should be a tip off that there are 30 handicapped parking spaces next to the Maine Inn but no sidewalk and the main parking lot is a gravel space a quarter of a mile down the road. The front porch is fantastic. There are a ton of comfy rocking chairs arrayed where you can sit out and enjoy the view. Enjoy it, because that is all this place has going for it. The lobby is dark, dated and dingy and smells like a nursing home. Which is where you'll think you are given the age of the clientele and the fact that dinner in the main dining room (for which you'll be given a complimentary Meal Ticket) is served from 5-7. Afterwards you can play scrabble and have a drink in the lobby (where the pool table has a sign proclaiming it off limits for anyone under the age of 16 and another sign tells you that quiet hours begin at 10 pm). There are no elevators here and all the rooms are up at least four to five steps from the lobby so I'm not sure how all the people we saw with walkers and canes navigate this place. There is a ramp up to the dining room. The hallway to our room reminded my of my college dorm. Industrial gray carpeting on the floors and plain white walls. Oh, there is a collection of faded Norman Rockwell prints hanging every few feet between the doors to the rooms to remind you of your youth because you were alive when these were actually featured on magazine covers. The room itself is fine. Everything seemed clean though there were carpenter ants in the bathroom. The bed was softer than I would like, though that's usually the case for me at hotels, and again the bedding was clean but coarse and scratchy. The 70's called and they do not want their bedspread back. There is no phone in the room if that's important to you (really, doesn't everyone have a cell phone now?) and the television looked relatively new but I never watch TV when I'm on vacation so whatever. The water pressure in the shower was excellent. I also liked the fact that they have soap dispensers in the shower (which creates a lot less waste and is better for the environment) but I didn't think Breck was even produced anymore. Up on the third floor they have a library with a tastefully arrayed display of Dog Fancy magazines from 2004. Seriously, the dogs on the covers are all dead now. Think about that. There is some interesting history here about Poland Spring water (there is a small museum) and the Maine State Building from the Chicago world's fair which is lovely, but you don't have to stay here to access those things. The chapel behind the Maine Inn is beautiful and if you could set up a tent for the reception and have someone else cater it would be a fantastic place to get married. There are tennis courts and two horse shoe pitches out back. I can't comment on the golf course itself because I'm not a golfer and we didn't partake of any the advertised water front activities available across the road but I'm not sure who is using the paddle boats given the clientele we observed and the complete lack of other amenities that would appeal to families with children. When we came in from dinner at 10 pm the band in the dining hall was still going strong and the 10 people there to watch them play and the two couples on the dance floor in the cavernous room seemed to be enjoying themselves. Like everything at this resort it just felt sad. So, yeah, I won't be back. Unless it's to stay at that cute B&B we saw down the road... read more

I was there a couple weekends ago for the wedding of two friends of mine. They wed at a church in Lewiston and held the reception at the Poland Spring Resort. The place is good, but idiosyncractic. The setting is unbeatable: the scenery is gorgeous, the architecture lovely, and nothing's better than sitting on the long porch of the Maine Inn. As the website notes, you do have to bring your own soap and towels. There are also several particular regulations about how they charge you (e.g., no refunds unless you can buy the "Vacation Packages Protection Plan" for $15; $2 deposit for each key). Not to mention peculiar state regulations posted, such as no one is allowed to carry more than two drinks. But I guess that's New England for you. The reception was in the Maine Inn. The food was fine, but the DJ was an older man who didn't do much to adapt to the guests. For example, he mispronounced the best man's name (apparently didn't ask). I can't say I enjoyed his selection of loud and tacky pop music. The bride's family was made of traditional, family-oriented French Catholics, but somehow the DJ saw no problem in playing an explicit song like "Lady Marmalade" (can anyone say "désastre"?). On the other side of the ledger, he did play "Thriller" as the penultimate song and popped up on the dance floor moonwalking in a Michael Jackson mask--almost enough to make one forget his other misdeeds. If I scheduled a wedding reception there, I'd bring my own DJ! But the place is fine for simple accommodations. read more

The grounds are beautiful, there is a beautiful golf course, bocce courts, nature walks, shuffleboard, the staff was friendly, there is a lot of old New England Inn charm. The food (at the wedding) was very tasty. We had a really nice time. I also liked that they allowed us to check in early. That being said, I did not realize that the rooms were beyond sparse. No phone to call the front desk and ask where everything else is, like: Ice buckets or ice machines, glasses, wi-fi, mini fridge, elevators, etc. I don't bring this up as a complaint as much as an FYI for first-time guests. If I had known, we would have brought a few more comforts from home and stopped at the convenience store for ice and cups. The sound from other rooms and the hallway comes through the rooms very loudly. There was a small tv with basic cable. The clientele seems to tilt toward the more senior of our citizens. I went here for a wedding the other day, and while the wedding was a beautiful service and the set up gorgeous. I have three MAJOR GRIPES with the staff at the Poland Spring Resort Inn that was where the reception and cocktail hour was held. My first issue: I am a pregnant woman and my husband was ordering my simple seltzers with a dash of cranberry juice. He had to keep the bartender from pouring vodka into my drink over and over again!! They couldn't seem to understand that someone wanted a NON-ALCOHOLIC beverage and kept asking him what type of vodka he would like even though he kept telling them no alcohol, because his wife was pregnant. I witnessed the whole thing multiple times and had to make sure they didn't add anything to my drink. My second issue: The bar was not an open bar, which is no big deal and they took cards and cash. I always use cash for wedding events mainly because I never know where the bar might be located at a wedding, and if they can take cards. They tried to short change us multiple times. At one point we gave the bartender a $20 bill for a $6 drink order (my husbands beer, and my seltzer and cranberry juice) and she gave him a five back. We corrected her and she actually had the audacity to question us. This was in the very beginning of the evening. She finally gave us back our correct change. We stopped using this bartender and used another one at the bar, she shortchanged us too! For another $6 drink order we gave her a $20 and she tried to jip us by giving us $12 back instead of the $14. The bar prices were completely random, as the evening went on my husbands $4 beer went from $4 to $6 - another thing we had to keep correcting them on. After awhile it wasn't even worth getting him more drinks because of the hassle and rudeness of the two women bartenders. My third issue: The women whom I kept ordering seltzer and cranberry juice from yelled at me when I left the porch of the inn to walk back to the car because I had my drink with me. I told her it was the drink she had been making me all night which was just seltzer and cranberry and she griped an attitude. I then reminded her I'm pregnant and that's why it was non alcoholic for the past 6 drinks of these she had made me. She had the audacity to say that I didn't even look pregnant just subtly enough so that she thought I didn't hear her. If that was the case then why would I keep ordering non alcoholic beverages? Insisting there is no alcohol in my drink? And why would I look pregnant to clearly everyone else? So Poland Spring Resort I highly suggest you find yourself NEW bartenders, bartenders that won't try putting alcohol into non-alcoholic drinks because that is a HUGE concern, and also try training your staff to not try ripping off the bar patrons with random price changes, and short changing customers! read more

Have been going to the resort for probably 25 years, I remember Mel greeting us on each visit. Cindy has kept the same warm reception intact. It is so relaxing sitting on the porch watching the sunset or at night the stars. Have always admired the staff, they have always been accommodating and willing to help in any way. Paid $99 night for room in presidental building. No elevator. We we're on the third floor, long walk with bags..... Dog across the hall non stop barking. The room was'nt that wonderful, small pipes for heat exposed with insulation pieced to cover it up. Bugs in the tub!!! We moved to the motor lodge. Larger room, girl at check-in was very accommodating with letting us change the room. That is what the 2 stars are for, she was great. No phones in the room, not told in room description on web. Walls we're Painted over paneling. Bath is up to date. Defiantly not worth the $$$. If another place was available I would have chosen it over this place. I guess you are paying for the name "Poland Springs" !! I should have known better. Took a chance!! NOT impressed. Not going to revisit after this stay. read more

Just a warning when making reservations, specifically if you are travelling alone. I'll accept part of the blame, because I did not immediately verify my reservation email that they sent it, but I called and made a reservation, and was billed for two guests (I was booking one room and only said as much). I checked a few days before I went there, called, and was told I could get not get a refund for the second guest that I had never intended on booking. I asked again when I was checking in, and was again informed by the 'manager' that there would be no refund. No discussion, no consideration, and no customer service. Otherwise the other reviews tell the story. Old and outdated, but if that's what you're looking for I'm sure it's fine. I was on the third floor of the Presidential Inn (no elevators), a terribly small room with a small window a/c unit (so I could not open the window for fresh air). They couldn't even align the number of the room to the number of the President, they went off track after 10 or so. The food wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't good. It was not really a buffet as advertised, but one large meal basically served family style. A buffet to me would have had a few different options. The bar closes way too early, and then they don't allow you to have your own liquor anywhere out in public. They say these are Maine state laws but overall it seemed pretty odd. I couldn't get a beer in one bar and walk 200 yards to the other bar with it? The bartender did say he could keep the bar open a little later, but only if we sat there quietly. You have to provide your own towels, soap, and shampoo. The rooms do not include refrigerators. Our air conditioner was broken.....That said, the place did have character. It has a sweeping front porch overlooking a wide open field and mountains. The place was built over 200 years ago and has lots of quirks, and the staff seemed to know a lot about the history. Been staying here for years not a good experience this year. Had to wait in line at least half hour to check in. Said all rooms had to be cleaned before check in. Now the irony, our room was not made up. They did give us a room in the Maine Inn. Now I move everything a quarter mile from one inn to another. We are talking 90 degree weather, no elevator, and no air in the corridors. I.e. My wife does not travel light. So now for the solution. An adult is needed at check in. If you NEED a place to sleep, it will do but beware, you might not get much sleep here due to the thin walls and the children running through the halls early in the morning. I know that's not the resorts fault but it becomes their fault when you tell the front desk and they do nothing about it. My fiance and I stayed here for race weekend and to check out the venue for our wedding. This is probably the 10th hotel I've stayed in all year and the absolute worst! From the outdated decor to the old folks home smell in the lobby, to the damp hotel room! Night one, I turned down my bedspread and was met with a pillowcase covered in dog hair! The following morning, after a Horrible night's sleep, due to the people in the room above us river dancing all night, I dressed in damp clothes from the basement like room we were put in. At this point, I needed coffee. Nope, no breakfast as stated in the pamphlet your handed upon check in and no free coffee. For 150 a night, coffee is the least that could be offered! This resort is all curb appeal and nothing more. I wish I had pitched a tent and slept on the ground. At the very least, id have an explanation for the back pain I woke up with! read more

OMG! Not gonna mince words. This place sucks. I wanted to book the lodge as friends I was going to casino did but we're booked. So looked into the presidential inn on the property. Well got a room booked online. They did not mention you have to check in at the Maine inn which has to be at least a half mile up the hill. Gave me two keys one for front two doors that worked less than half the time and would have to wait for someone to open from the inside. Room was on third floor no elevator. AC in room was a window unit the probably got on sale at Walmart. Thing sucked. Had ceiling fan but sounded like it was gonna fall from ceiling. Shower was small and made creaky noises if you moved. Get a free breakfast but have to hall ass back up to Maine in for it. Will absolutely not come back! read more

The hotel's front desk refunded our stay which was appreciated; however, the experience was awful and ruined our weekend plans. The grounds are nice, but the Main building, where we stayed was atrocious. The odor that we were greeted with upon arrival should have been our first clue. We were put in a room that was nothing more than a finished basement with half-sized windows and an ac unit that was mounted between the windows. I had to step on the bed to adjust the ac. One window was cracked, no shades on the windows just cheap unlined curtains on old rods. The bathroom looked like the last update was in 1960. The vanity was painted over cracked wood. Drawers in the vanity were lined with old linoleum that was dirty and curled on the edges. One pillow had a blood spot on it, dust and bugs (both dead and alive) were among the other amenities the room had to offer. When we thought that was bad enough, a band began to play in the lounge that shook our room to a point that it was vibrating enough to loosen the dust from the ceiling. Again we were refunded, we left, and drove the three hours home as no other hotel had vacancies. read more

Even though the hotel is extremely dated, its still a great deal. Spent memorial day weekend here with my grandparents and husband and we had a good time even though it rained literallly all weekend. I stayed at the maine inn but next time i'll rent one of the cabins. Good thing is they now provide you with towels so you don't have to bring your own. Food wasn't great but its also a buffet so you can't expect much. read more

This is specific to the golf course. Love the layout and always has been in good condition. Signature hole #4 is beautiful. But it seems like it's at least a 5 hour round every time I play. No ranger out there to keep play moving. Shouldn't be more than 4 hours to play a round here not a hard place to get around. read more

This past weekend (18-20OCT2013) was my first experience at the Poland Spring Resort. Another couple from Eliot, ME invited my wife and I to join them for a "Motor Booty" weekend. Since we've never been to the resort before we did not know what to expect. First of all, the staff which consisted mostly of young men and women were exceptional. Kudos' must go to Cindi Robbins (Proprietor) for hiring personnel that understand the importance of "Customer Service." Although the accommodations are modest they are refreshing. Retro, but Clean & Classy! The grounds are beautifully kept and the golf course on the premise looks challenging. Buffet style meals are included for the weekend and tasteful. Wi-Fi is available in the lobby and cable TV in the rooms. Nice game room, an exceptional library which was started by Cyndi's late husband Mel Robbins. My recommendation is to plan to a stay at this "Stress Free Zone" in 2014. Forget your electronics for the weekend, bring a book and sit on the beautiful deck and admire the spectacular views. You won't regret it! And last, for those who still remember how to dance will love the performance of the group, "Motor Booty!" read more

We booked a room at the Lodge, about a 1/2 mile from the main facility but owned and run by them. The room was tiny. Two double beds were separated by a single end table, leaving no room to walk around either bed. The only way to close the blinds on the window was to climb over the bed. The TV in the room was an old analog TV, about 19", with a digital converter. The remote only changed channels, it was never programmed for the TV. Had to manually change the volume and turn it on and off. The TV belonged in a museum, not in a hotel room. The walls were paper thin so got to heal mumbling from one room next to ours and a baby crying in the other. No coffee maker in the room, but a sign on a coffee machine in the "breakfast" room said coffee from 6 AM until 10. Went down at six thirty to get coffee and the room was locked. No coffee until 7. Bathroom was tiny as well, no vanity, no counters. The drain cover in the bathtub/shower was rusted, looked disgusting. These folks appear to be maximizing profits by not updating or maintaining the rooms or staffing appropriately. read more
