We loved being able to walk from the inn to restaurants and shops in Freeport. Most appreciated was their thoughtfulness of providing delicious homemade gluten free food to accommodate my allergy. At night we played games in the parlor while enjoying the delicious warm homemade gluten free cookies. In the morning the three course breakfast was really delicious, especially the gluten free banana scones with maple. I highly recommend staying at the Kendall Inn.

As drizzly rain began, hubs settled down at the puzzle table for the evening! Fresh baked cookies are available in the evenings as well, served with cold milk. The rooms are well appointed with updated bathrooms. The Inn is close to anything you might need to get to in Freeport. Breakfast was delicious as well! This inn provides all the cozy things ~ coffee available in the morning, a selection of other coffees and teas available via Keurig at other times. My only complaint is that the bedside lighting in our room isn't sufficient for reading. Mood lighting ~ check. Reading ~ you'll need to use your phone or a flashlight. It isn't super close to Old Port, but it's about a 20-25 minute walk, even faster if you have a car or bike. Our host, David, was so gracious and kind. He gave us all kinds of tips on where to eat, what to see, and which neighborhoods to check out. And the breakfast options. Holy moly. These are some of the things David made: lobster souffle; turkey bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast puff pastry; raspberry custard; pancakes with wild blueberry compote; lobster home fries. Honestly, some of our best meals in Portland were eaten right in this very B&B. He even puts snacks in the second floor lounge area (there's also tea and chips) every day, and on an especially hot day he put out a pitcher of pink lemonade. It seems like almost all the cooking and cleaning is done by him. I'm not sure how he manages it and yet everything is flawless, but there you go. Reserve your room early because it was booked solid the whole time we were there. Totally worth it.

It was the most perfect setting for a fun, kid, and dog-friendly celebration at the breathtaking Harpswell Lookout Point. At one point, as I was simply sitting in a rocking chair, gazing at the magnificent sea view, with birds chirping, kids' laughter echoing, and my dog peacefully by my side, I honestly felt like I was in a real-life "Calm Soundscape" - pure heaven. Harpswell Inn is truly a magical place. The lovely young couple who took over a few years ago have done an exceptional job preserving the traditional 1800s Maine vibe of the house while infusing it with modern, fun, and funky furniture. The staff, though a small and dedicated team, were incredibly friendly and welcoming. I must give a special shout-out to Barbara, a true Harpswellonian, whose blueberry scones are absolutely divine! I even had a delightful small-town moment running into her aunt at the local Hannaford's in Brunswick. The thoughtful owners also provided a delicious continental breakfast, featuring locally roasted coffee, and offered kayaks and paddleboards for the more adventurous members of our group to enjoy. Our friends also inquired with Kelsey, the owner, about hosting a private chef for a special three-course meal. Kelsey went above and beyond, creating a gorgeous tablescape adorned with local flowers. She collaborated with a local private chef who focused on sourcing everything locally. Our culinary journey began with fresh oysters featuring traditional fixings and an amazing yuzu orange sauce, alongside a gorgeous cheeseboard as appetizers. Our three-course meal then commenced with a delightful tuna tartare salad with fried capers, followed by perfectly cooked NY Strip steak with garlicky chimichurri sauce, huge, delicious scallops, and incredible focaccia bread. The meal concluded with a delightful and refreshing key lime pie. The owners were also kind enough to arrange a separate, equally delicious meal for the kids, featuring a fun crunchy salad, mac and cheese, and brownie bites (yes, I tried it all!). If I could convince our group of friends to make this an annual tradition, and we could secure our spot early enough with the kind owners, I would absolutely make Harpswell Inn our go-to destination every 4th of July. Thank you, Kelsey, John, and Archer, for being such lovely and gracious hosts. We can't wait to return!

The place has apparently gone through a couple ownership changes since our last visit. The vibe is still good and we enjoyed our visit, but a little of the shine we used to enjoy has diminished. The Broad Arrow Tavern, long one of our favorite places to eat, is no longer there and a sign hangs on the door advertising meeting space available. The front desk staff were polite and efficient, but not particularly warm or welcoming. Afternoon tea is still served, but the offerings aren't as robust as they once were. You have to request in advance fresh towels and room cleaning, which isn't a big deal if you know that (returning after a day out to a messy room with damp morning towels still on the floor is a disappointment). Still, we had a good visit and enjoyed our stay.

So that is four. That leaves a pull out sofa in the main room. AND there is only ONE BATHROOM. The main bedroom bed did not have a frame. In fact, none of the beds had bed frames and there is no art on any of the walls, so the pictures on the website are not accurate. The closet door was completely missing in one bedroom. There was a nasty red stain on the carpet in the big bedroom. There was a broken tie rack in one closet. The kitchen looks like it was last renovated in the late 1980s. The rear entrance does not lock securely, the back door has a note on it on how to lift the handle to get the bolt to lock. The kitchen had a table with only two chairs. So you and your guests will not be eating together. There were three other mismatched chairs scattered around the unit, and none of those were the right height for the kitchen table. In the living room there was a dehumidifier grinding along. There seems to be a drainage issue with the whole complex. The front window by the front door was missing a curtain. Another curtain wasn't hung properly. Neither television worked properly, as the internet connection kept glitching. There was a scarred desk in the living room. The showerhead in the one bathroom needs to be replaced. I did not find this townhouse adequate for adults. I give three stars because of the building and grounds, very pretty, and within walking distance to downtown.
