This gal! After struggling to find any available appointment in or nearby Austin (the soonest was the end of August for my license that was about to expire), I finally located a DPS appointment over 2.5 hours away in Kerrville. I had such a wonderful experience at the Kerrville DPS, and the staff person who helped me, Jeanne, provided excellent service. She was empathetic to the long drive I had and helped review my paperwork for me to be sure I had the needed documentation. All of the staff were helpful to every person who came in for their appointments, including someone who forgot his passport and had to return much later in the day. The Kerrville DPS was such an easy experience (my best ever at any DMV office across multiple states), and I thank especially Jeanne for her excellent service. It was ALMOST worth the almost 6 hours roundtrip to get my license there. Seriously, if you need a great DPS office for your license needs in central Texas, head on over to the Kerrville DPS.

My wife and I visited Kerrville, Texas to view the 2024 solar eclipse. The city was within a couple…read moreof miles of the eclipse's path of totality. We were favorably impressed by the place itself, and by the preparations and accomodations the City made, both for the many thousands of tourists expected to arrive, all at once, on the day of the eclipse, and for Kerrville's residents, who were certain to be affected by the influx of people and their cars, and by the demands these guests would make on local businesses and infrastructure. The City did a fantastic job of organizing, promoting and managing eclipse viewing opportunities around town. Besides hosting an "Eclipse Festival" in its Louise Hays Park, the city's Parks & Recreation Department opened the Kerrville Sports Complex as a parking and viewing location. This was not a free offer. Pre-paid parking, on either the Baseball/Softball side of the Complex or the Soccer side, cost $75 to $100, depending when it was purchased. I was happy to pay the fee, because I'm a planner, and reserved parking let me avoid driving around a strange town with a clock ticking in my head as the eclipse approached. It saved me from competing with other out-of-towners for a viewing spot. And best, it provided us with a secure stopping place, food, drinks, merch, portable toilets and easy access to the interstate, once the event was finished. I'd never heard of Kerrville before I started planning our excursion, and I don't think I'll have reason to visit again, but I'm grateful to the City and its citizens for their hospitality.

On the evening of November 29th, 2018, The Mysterious Ryan M. was pulled over for the first time in his life. The AHPD officer couldn't have been nicer. He assured me that I had broken no laws but that one of my brake lights was out. After running my driver's license through SCMODS ("State, County, Municipal Offender Data System" -- thank you, Elwood), he confirmed that I was an upstanding citizen and let me off with a warning. I thanked him for alerting me to the problem (a dangerous one at that), because I wouldn't have known otherwise. He could have issued me a $200 citation, but his MO was to help, not to harass. The Alamo Heights Police Department gets a bad rap. Instead of making baseless claims about their character or labeling them the "worst police force in America," (shame on you, Julie R.) how about simply obeying the traffic laws? If a cop pulls you over for speeding, take personal responsibility for the infraction and thank the officer for doing his or her part to keep Alamo Heights safe. How many times have you cursed the 30-mile-per-hour speed limit in Alamo Heights -…read moreor worse, the Alamo Heights Police Department, as an officer ticketed you for exceeding that ridiculously sluggish speed? Well, today I had a very positive interaction with those maligned keepers-of-the-peace-and-speed-limit, and subsequently just HAD to Yelp about it! This morning, my vehicle stalled while I was on my way to a haircut appointment. A suddenly disabled car is upsetting enough; but add to that, a very busy time - about 8:30 a.m. - at a very busy intersection (Austin Highway at Broadway), and you have an adrenaline rush of the worse kind. I had my hazard lights blinking, and people were swerving around me - probably saying nasty things under their breath - as I tried to call for emergency towing. Lo, out of the blue came uno, dos, tres Alamo Heights Police officers: one blocked traffic while the others pushed - and I steered - the car across traffic, safely into a parking lot! In addition, the officers checked up on me from time-to-time until the tow truck showed up, nearly an hour later! Now, it has occurred to me that they might have wanted to keep tabs on ME, to make sure I didn't just abandon my vehicle - or cause other mischief while I was awaiting transport (never can be too careful with fat middle-aged women, right?). I'm going to assume the very best, though, and suppose that these dedicated public servants are also Good Samaritans, who were concerned about a citizen's welfare. So, a heart-felt "THANK YOU" to the city of Alamo Heights, the Alamo Heights Police Department, and - most especially - my three rescuers. And I promise to grumble less, from this point forward, when I have to observe the Alamo Heights speed limit.

They all displayed a genuine concern for the public's safety and welfare. This was my first ride-along with the KPD, but in past years have observed the L.A. Sheriff's Department (LASD) on several rides. I have much respect for the LASD, however I'd have to rate the KPD much higher for how they deal with the public.

Public Safety! Goooooo Roadrunners!…read more This police department protects and serves the University of Texas at San Antonio. They do a good job of policing the campus, and keeping things safe. Fortunately, the only run in I've had with the UTSA Police was when I got a parking ticket for parking in the wrong lot- I was late, and I was guilty. Even though I had temporary paper plates, the UTSA Police Department was able to hunt me down and present me with the infraction, which I duly paid. The UTSA Police also offers security escorts- if you have to walk out to your car in some distant lot all alone after a night class, they'll happily escort you out there, or give your car a jump. They carry special jumper cables for such a need. I've never seen thing go down on the UTSA campus, probably thanks to the UTSA Police, but I read about things happening occasionally on campus, and it seems that the UTSA Police have been quick to step in and restore the peace.

This is the friendliest Police Department ever. They offer free jump starts, key assist, tire…read moreassists and safety escorts if on campus. They are always very professional and they will help you on everything they can.

My wife was in town on vaction and her rental car was burglarized. Over $1000 dollars worth of…read morestuff was taken (including serialized numbered items) and a vehicle window smashed. PD told her they were not going to dispatch an officer and to file her report online through an AI driven website. When the online system was having glitches she was told it would be 14 days before they would get back to her so she wouldn't be able to file the police report till then. I dont know the laws in Texas but I would believe they would be similar to our state, where the burglary to a vehicle plus the theft valued over $1000 dollars plus the damages to the vehicle would equal 1 misdomeaner and 2 felonies. I too work in law enforcement and this would not fly at my agency, especially involving felonies.
