I have lived many places in the USA (7 states & 18 cities) but I have NEVER, I mean EVER felt so…read moremuch disrespect & disgust with this group of law enforcement personnel. 1. They drive the nicest cars of any police force I have witnessed. 2. They ARE way OVERSTAFFED. I typically see at least 1 police car for every 10-15 drivers. It reminds me of my time living in the occupied territories of Palestine; where Israeli police literally beat, arrested & persecuted anyone who appeared 'suspicious'. 3. They have forgotten the mission to 'Protect & Serve'; replacing their mission with 'Rob & Search Out Money' at all costs. 4. The times that I have needed assistance or asked for help, they have been abrupt, rude, disrespectful & dismissive. However, when there is an accident or the opportunity to drive fast, play their big loud sirens, they will knock pedestrians off the sidewalk, endanger citizen's lives & waste hours doing nothing. Every accident that I have witnessed or driven by, there have been no less than 7 police cars. Really? Not a great use of hard earned taxpayer dollars. 5. Every officer that I have encountered is overweight, out of shape, arrogant, rude, disrespectful, pompous & uncommunicative. They have all been ignorant of laws (including citizen's civil rights, due process, Miranda rights, procedural guidelines, etc.) 6. The few times I have dealt with these so-called 'Selfless Public Servants', it has evoked fears of a growing police state. What a tragedy! I suppose they have either beaten their citizens into submission, surgically extracted their brains (and capacity to think) or run every thinking person out of town. Not a great long term strategy for success guys.

If I could give this negative stars I would. Don't even bother going to the walk-in appointment…read moreline, even if the appointments aren't available to book for 2 weeks out..... There has got to be another solution. Because I had no choice, I was there at 9am for the walk-in line. What they don't tell you is that they will only service the cars in the walk-in appointment line IF there's no cars in the appointment line. (Spoiler alert, there's always cars in the appointment line because there's apparently only one person working going the pace of a snail. It's almost as if this is intentionally set up this way). Then your car is trapped and you can't leave. I didn't get my car VIN checked until 1pm. 4 hours. Had to take half a day off work. Worst experience ever.

Can't let a one-star rating stand by itself when my experience is so very different…read more We had a house fire two years ago and, while we were fighting the fire after having called 911, an officer showed up right away. A second officer arrived with the fire department and she put us in a warm patrol car (it was early December and bitterly cold outside) and stayed with us until the fire captain reported the house safe to re-enter. So to find out more about OPD, I signed up for the Citizens' Police Academy which is one of the department's community outreach programs. That was an amazing experience. The classes covered officer selection and accession, training and standards, deployment, and operations and equipment. The most important part, though was not just the details of "what" and "how" but also the "why" of the department's SOPs. I learned so much about procedures and their enforcement when I rode along on a night shift with the same officer who took care of us when we had the fire. The department is full of outreach programs that give insight into the department and to the officers who serve us . . . Coffee with a Cop, public meeting with the chief and his senior officers, Neighborhood Watch (the ones that I've attended so far), the police advisory commission, and a host of others. The most valuable is their presence on social media; the people who are tied in to that presence receive timely warnings and alerts, requests for assistance, and general policing information I honestly don't know how the department could be more open to interacting with the general public. I haven't been stopped for an infraction (knock on wood) but I have interacted with several officers in other contexts and they have been uniformly courteous, friendly, and professional with an obvious desire to help. Chief Menke won't remember me (might be a good thing!) even though I've had the opportunity to talk briefly with him one-on-one twice in the last year. I have come away from each of those conversations with the strong sense of his dedication, high standards for his officers, strict enforcement of those standards, and his ongoing concern for the safety of the residents of and visitors to Olathe. So, well done, Chief Menke; I highly recommend the officers of your department and the non-sworn staff as well. (And I have no clue as to why Yelp lists me as living in San Francisco when I live in Olathe?!?!?)

Last week I graduated from the Fall 2024 Citizens Police Academy (CPA), and that's what prompted me…read moreto write this review. The CPA is a 12-week class that educates citizens about the mission undertaken by the men and women of the Lenexa Police Department. Each 3.5-hour, weekly class featured a different topic, different departments, and different presenters. I was really blown away by what I learned about all the various ways the LPD serves our city, the passion of the employees to protect and serve, and the quality of the facilities, leadership, vehicles, equipment, and more. I learned that there are other educational opportunities that the LPD offers Lenexa residents, including a ride-along program; a semi-annual, four-week use of force workshop; and a summer camp for tweens and teens. I intend to avail myself of some of those! Most of all, I came away with a greater respect for the difficult work these folks do, both physically and emotionally. It gave me more appreciation for the sacrifices they make on our behalf and a greater understanding of how much they deserve our support. I highly recommend this course for anyone considering a career in law enforcement, residents wanting a better idea of how your tax dollars are being used, and resources available to us at no expense (beyond our tax payments) to help prevent crime and keep ourselves safe.
