Iced the chicken vs leaving it under the warmer. Fries and Campero sauce were good (sauce has a pickle flavor to it, unexpected but delicious). Chicken (leg & thigh) were juicy and the breading was well seasoned. Unfortunately there was mostly fat and not much meat on both pieces. My husband and I stopped by on our way home from a family party. We got the 12 piece - legs & thighs, mixed (half grilled half fried). It came with 3 sides- we got the plantains, beans, and yuca fries. Our order came with tortillas or buns, we chose tortillas. It was a LOT of food- enough for over 2 meals for both of us. (We love leftovers). Plantains were caramelized and sweet. Yuca was crisp and tasted so good. Chicken was bomb as always- my husband swears by the fried and I love the grilled. Both are delicious. We FINALLY made it to Pollo Campero after many recommendations and driving by the restaurant often. We finally had our "Bite into life!" Now I'm disappointed that we didn't stop sooner. Where do I begin...The CHICKEN is the star!! Both the fried and grilled are winning choices. They were both flavorful, juicy and very tasty. The fried chicken was crunchy and delicious not that over breaded fried chicken where the skin separates from the chicken and the chicken has no taste. This chicken is well seasoned from skin to the bone. The citrus seasoned grilled chicken is also yummy receiving a double thumbs up! Let's talk sides. You get 2 with an 8 piece. We couldn't decide soooo we got the corn salad-5 Stars...the sunflower seeds were an added bonus. The Campero beans 5+ extra good and tasty added them to some rice on day 2 and almost went back to get more. The coleslaw 3 crunchy but something missing. Needed a pinch of sweet. Plantains 4 nicely seasoned and cooked. The side salad was fresh and tasty with the balsamic vinaigrette. The rolls were average. The SERVICE was OUTSTANDING!!! We were warmly greeted in the drive through and let them know this was our first visit. They were patient with us as we read all of the wonderful options and chose our sides. They reviewed our order and confirmed our order (This doesn't happen often enough with drive through service) Our order was CORRECT when we reached our destination to consume our newly found treasures. Love the idea of trying not only some place new, but a business with actual south American roots. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was bright, friendly, and fun! The staff were helpful and not only brought the food out to us after we ordered from the counter, but checked back to see how we liked the food. The FOOD! Wow, so I'm thinking, this is gonna be on-par with Chipotle, since the counter and vibe was in that genre, but NO... the chicken was so flavorful, both the crispy fried chicken, and the marinated, garlicky version were yummmm-o delicious! Now to tell you about this impressive chicken, many times I have had chicken and not once after any fast food joint have I ever had a tender and juicy (very moist and yet fully cooked) chicken breast. In fact most places I have eaten at I choose to avoid the breast because of how dry it usually is. I took a chance and I was impressed. The breast was so moist. So fresh and so tender just not at all what I expected. The side selection is awesome because they have plantains (a favorite) and I have had their Mac and cheese and let me tell you somebody Mama knew what they were doing passing that one down. The chicken grilled or fried is again amazing. The flavor. The fried chicken coating is NOT your usual but it is still really good and flavorful to say the least. That is for those who are more comfortable with a crunchy crunchy crunch throughout the entirety of eating a piece of fried chicken. Great food. Go to the Mercado Central please - that is Latin food. It's on Lake, in Midtown, and wow. Actual amazing authentic cheap Latin food. You come here and you're just getting Americanized fast food that is an absolute rip-off and bastardization and homogenization and appropriation of a culture. Pollo Campero has the BEST fast food friend chicken anywhere in North America! This Guatemalan/Salvadoran chain is *insanely* popular in Central America (people regularly bring back boxes of it when visiting those countries), but there are also locations in the US, including right here in St Paul! The fried chicken is their signature dish, and it's perfectly seasoned and fried and super juicy (and dairy free!). Their sides are good too, and I highly recommend their yucca fries and fried plantains. You can get a fairly good-sized family meal for around $30, making it a great value too. Chose the fried chicken option with Campero Rice and the Yuca Fries. -Fried chicken was alright. Nothing spectular. A tad greasy, but still moist. Not overwhelming with flavor, but still manages to be tasty. -Campero rice was enjoyable and tasty -Yuca Fries- loved them and the dipping sauce that accompanied them -corn tortillas were fresh (choice of tortillas or biscuit) Other options for sides are: beans, plantains, fries, black beans and rice, and some other choices. They do also have burritos and chicken strips. We tried a piece of the grilled chicken which I think is what we will choose next time. Good flavoring and seasoning. Staff was very nice and helpful. OMG, this is our go-to place for comfort food. We just love that this is an better alternative to Kentucky Fried Chicken with a twist of Latin America. Most family meals come with 2 sides along with tortillas or fries. We usually go for a mix of grill and fried chicken with sides of yucca fries and beans. We ordered ahead for drive-thru pickup of their Special 20 pieces of legs and thighs for $37 plus additional $11 for 3 large side order of seasoned rice, mashed potatoes, and fried plantains. Chickens is moist and flavorful, their accompanying side dishes were also very tasty. Empanadas was the best in my opinion, it was light and crispy, totally regret ordering only 3 them. I used to like this place in the past. When I ate/drank sugar the Horchata was good. One time I ordered the empanadas and there was a small bone inside. I shrugged it off as a fluke. At least it wasn't a hair. On Tuesday I did the 2 for $2 empanadas again and 5 out of 6 were fine but again I found a small piece of chicken bone in the empanada. Thats it I am done! I have to say that I have been here a few times, and this place is truly my favorite fried chicken place in the area. It not only always seems busy whether drive-thru or walk-in, but the wait is never too long. What I also enjoy, is how the employees always seems friendly, and a smile on their face. When ordering my favorite items are the fried chicken with some mashed potatoes and some yucca fries. Next time I head over here I might have to try some chicken nuggets or even their own fried chicken sandwich. We have seen the sign for Pollo Campero on 494 for years and finally decided to check it out after making a run to Gertens. We are so glad we did! This place is great, with very distinctive fried chicken that is quite tasty and unlike places like KFC and Popeye's that have heavily breaded chicken that come across as bland after trying Pollo Campero. The service was friendly and fast, plus our server gave us a free empanada when he found out this was our visit. We will definitely be back. read more

I can't believe that there's a Pollo Campero in Minneapolis! It's the stuff of legends in El Salvador and rest of Central America and this place is the equivalent, better (there, I said it) than any KFC or any other chicken place anywhere in the States. This place is legit and waaaay better than I remembered. Stuff of legends, I tell ya! If you ask any Central American about Pollo Campero, you may agree that their knees often will buckle, they may swoon, their eyes misting over wistfully and then go on to regale you with their fond chicken eating memories. I ordered their traditionally fried chicken (lightly battered and fried to a nice succulent texture) as well as their citrus Peruvian (citrus marinated and not breaded). Stick to their original and I promise it'll taste nothing like Old Coronel Sander's recipe. THIS chicken will make your taste buds scream in delight. Crispy, tender and oh so so so juicy. The crunchy fried bits that are left on your plate are sooooooo good that you'll find yourself trying to pick them up with your finger when no one is looking. We. Don't. Judge. The yucca fries are also pretty darn good, crunchy, crispy. The Campero rice and Campero beans are ok but nothing to brag about (the beans needing more flavor and a thicker consistency). It's all good though, because it's all about that chicken. That succulent chicken is the star of the show! One gripe that I did have is that I asked for all wings and breasts for my 12 piece order. Cause if not they will try to sneak in a bunch of thighs into that box and just one or two breasts (true story). That all-white-meat request costs an additional $5...so our 12 piece family meal ( for just two of us... lol) came out on the pricy side of $35. OUCH! I'm willing to overlook the price because KFC isn't any cheaper. If you do find yourself near Pollo Campero, I encourage you to give them a try. They truly do live up to all the hype!
