I really do not know why people had rate this place almost 5 stars. I afraid to try new places because reviews are so inaccurate. My 1 stars is only for the service, he was really friendly but doesn't really listen. The cashier had told me they've been open since the 80s, and its one of the first Mexican food here in MN, so I was VERY excited. I asked him, "May i get extra Verde or salsa roja?" And he said, "oh we don't have verde, only the red sauce." (Cricket) so i told him i'll take extra red sauce, and he said for sure. He gave me 3, when i had ordered 4 tacos, 2 burritos, and one Large Menudo so 3 sauce is definitely not enough if you do actually eat as much Mexican food as i do. The "Red sauce" is tomato blended with chili, no flavors at all, bland...not even salt. SO, i had to go to another taco place near me to grab some verde and salsa roja. I had requested him to please put onions and cilantro inside the burritos since he told me there's none, he said they got me but they didn't put any in the burritos. There's barely any meat inside both burritos, we got carnitas and cabeza. All there was in there was, bean, rice, and very minimal meat. The menudo is also very bland, so I didn't even try the tacos since I've given up at this point. Rhey had put ALL of our food into ONE bag, so our burritos were super flat. Oof. So many mixed feelings. I had originally had their tacos from a food truck and they were delicious. I thought it would be worth trying their full menu, so we ordered a variety of items. First off, when my husband came home, my portion of our order was entirely missing. Similar to other reviews, the pastor was a strange shade of neon pink. The beef tamale was delicious, if a little burnt on the sides. The seasoning was spot on. The queso, however, was straight liquid and had zero seasoning. Once we got to my tacos, I ordered based off of the pictures on the menu, and a lot was missing. For instance, the tinga did not come with the radishes as shown, and the fajita taco didn't come with fajita veggies as soon. Disappointing. Overall, there are a lot of great taco places in West Saint Paul/Westside St. Paul, which I would recommend over this place. read more

Let me start by saying 3 stars is NOT a bad review in my book. It means a place is perfectly fine, just not amazing. Most of my reviews are 3 stars, because that's just reality. El Taquito is a hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant that recently started offering vegan soy chicken tinga tacos and homemade vegan chorizo tacos (and tostadas, I think?). The ordering process is confusing as the menu doesn't mention vegan options, so you have to ask the woman behind the counter. She doesn't offer guidance or help, but was friendly. We got the soy chicken tinga tacos ($3 each) and liked them; the tinga sauce was warming and well-done. The tortilla seemed store-bought and low-grade, but you can't get a soy chicken tinga taco anywhere else in the Twin Cities, so I won't complain too much. Unfortunately they were out of the vegan chorizo, so we didn't get to try that. The guacamole ($4) was fresh but lacked salt. They don't give you chips by default with this dish, but gave me a basket after I asked. The chips were obviously store-bought (probably Tostitos), but oh well. All told, I'm glad El Taquito has vegan options, but I wish they made it easier and clearer to order them. Other reviews have commented on the cleanliness of the interior; it might not be sparkling clean, but it didn't feel like it was dirty by any means. A few blocks south you can get vegan soy curl tacos and burritos at Hamburguesas El Gordo. I think those tacos are also great, so it's cool that this part of West St. Paul has become a Latino vegan hotspot. read more

If you see this food truck you need to stop and try their delicious tacos. My luck that they were parked right outside the Eden Prairie Community Center. You order at the window on the left and then pick up your food at the window on the right. Easy system! There are two guys running the truck that will give you advice on what to order. You can get tacos with chicken, beef or steak. Tacos are $3 each. Also, there are plates available with beans and rice. And the taco platter with three tacos, beans and rice. That is $11. I tried the chicken and the steak taco. Really good and plenty for lunch. The chicken was good but the steak was even better. If I see them again I will get two steak tacos. There are two sauces on the truck counter that you can put on the taco - one green and one red. The red is fairly mild but has good flavor. The green is another matter. One of the guys warned me I'd be crying! The green is a habanero based sauce and it is hot. Hot but the flavor is terrific. Try it but just don't douse your taco. I see they have a restaurant in St. Paul so will stop in if in the neighborhood. Will be looking for their truck again in the meantime. read more

I am really, and I mean REALLY, turned off by the cleanliness (or lack thereof) of El Taquito. I first stopped in over a year ago. We ate in an untidy, dimly lit space, and the guy who took our order was kind of snarky, but the food was tasty so I tried to shrug it off. I wasn't compelled to go back until recently, when I decided to try the drive-through. The woman in the drive-through was friendly. However, behind her, I watched a man reach his bare hands into containers of chopped onion and cilantro to fill to-go cups. No gloves. DURING A PANDEMIC. Come on. I lost my appetite, but was starving, so I tried my carne asada tacos (without onion and cilantro, unfortunately). The meat was dry and not as good as I remembered. I will never eat here again and I am really not picky about food establishments. The front door is also cluttered with old flower pots full of dirt, garbage, and old Christmas lights. With so many other restaurants on Robert street, I can do without this one. I feel like this place has a handful of loyal customers but they seriously need to clean it up. If it wasn't for my one good meal and the nice woman in the drive-through, my rating would be one star. read more

What they lack in ambianc, they make up for, exponentially in their food. Just a small staff, so it can take a bit, but it is well worth the wait. My first COVID-19 review. We're five weeks into the quarantine as I write this, and I really needed to try something new, even if it was a taco joint in WSTP where there is no shortage of them. My husband was at Menards across the street and he declared that it was time to sample a new place. No regrets! Wonderful, fresh, handmade corn tortillas. You might need a fork because they're so tender, but you can't beat the taste. Carne asada delicious, al pastor very good, burritos are my husband's favorite. Not sure if they always serve the onions and cilantro on the side, or if that's a result of COVID and all it has wrought on the restaurant industry. Makes it a little tough if you're eating in the car, but it doesn't detract from the overall flavor. Convenient drive-thru, the older gentleman who's waited on me a couple times is very sweet and you can tell he's grateful for the loyal customers that are still coming in for food. Before I start, I was raised in Rockport, TX and crossing the border was a regular thing. I've also crossed the border as an adult in Nuevo Laredo. I've taken road trips the the 4 points of the United States and eaten at every pit stop. Never have I ever had to ask for salt to season Mexican food. Usually tostadas have cotija which I prefer if this is the Mexican mozzarella it had no cheese smell or taste to it. The chicken tasted like it was boiled with water and a teaspoon of American chili powder... and that's it. I also had the charbroiled steak tostada and that's when I realized there was actually refried beans but because it had no taste and had an airy texture I didn't notice it was there. The rojo sauce that is served on the table wasn't even a deep red and tasted like Tabasco. Not sure about lettuce either but it's also we had to ask for lime and I would love radishes. Reviews said authentic but I'll let you go and decide for yourself. Service is order at counter and you find your own seat and it came out at a reasonable time. Good thing is they had onions and cilantro available if you asked. I actually wanted to ask for a whole spice rack though. My partner and i thought this could be a decent taco spot, however we were quite wrong. The taco meat was chewy and cold, and our chips and salsa were cheap circular processed nacho corn chips with pico de gallo. When we sat down to eat we noticed a random baby sitting in a booth across from us unattended, and it sat there unattended throughout our meal. On top of that there were a group of adult teens smoking weed and watching anime on the tv. Then on top of that they were blasting take on me at full volume the entire time on repeat. This little taco shop is a gem! Over the years, I tend to always get the same thing because I crave it! The spicy chicken tacos with corn tortillas (order how many you want and flour/corn)... typically I get 2 and a side of rice and beans. I put cilantro and lime on them and yummy yums! El Taquito offers all the expected elements of a family-owned Mexican restaurant: a wall-sized mural, Spanish-language soap operas, and an friendly, adorable family. It also offers some of the tasiest tacos you'll find in the Twin Cities. There are 11 varieties of tacos and I expect to experience them all over time. During this visit, I sampled the beef cheek tacos and chorizo tacos. i was afraid that the chorizo taco would be greasy, or grainy, as it is in many restaurants -- but it was excellent. It has a great contrast to the tender and subtly-flavored beef cheek tacos. All were served on soft and fresh corn torillas with a side of onions and cilantro. The absence of cheese isn't missed. Tacos were priced individually at less than $2 each, but the portions are small. You'll want to order 4-5 tacos of you have a modest appetite. And, although a bit pricey, it wouldn't be crazy to try one of each.You can get an enchilada plate with beans and rice for less than $10. These were also delicious. There are many Mexican restaurants to try in the Robert Street neighborhood, so it may be awhile until I return to El Taquito... but i will return. I recommend the Beef with peppers and jalepenos, but the chicken was all right. Like many Latino places, there was a TV blaring inside, but it worked out fine because we ate on the patio. It ain't Shangrila, a very narrow concrete patio fronting the strip mall parking lot, but it was an ok place to hang out with the kids and make lots of little tacos out of the generous meals we got. Everyone else there seemed to be native to Latin American countries, doesn't mean the food is good or "authentic," just FYI. But like almost every Latino restaurant I've been to the Cities, the guy who took my order spoke fluent English.
