So didn't think I would come to a restaurant that's stapled next to a gas station, but Pollo El Rey makes all those fast food joints that you typically do see next to the gas station look bad. Pollo El Rey serves up that great Mexican grilled chicken at prices that I would be thrilled with. My wife and I got half a chicken for a little over $8 and it was fantastic. Juicy, deeply flavorful char grilled chicken with rice, beans, onions on fantastic corn tortillas. Add a hit of that spicy green sauce and you're good to go. My wife couldn't stop raving about the corn tortillas - that they have taste and texture and didn't feel like cardboard and I'd agree with her. It's one of the few times I would rather take corn than flour. But you'll definitely leave full and happy even if you're hungry enough to not want to split it. Next time I'm in San Marcos and want a cheap meal, this is where I'm going. read more

Don't let the fact that Pollo El Rey is a little grungy and built into a gas station deter you their chicken is the best I've ever had at the time of writing this review. It was so good the first time I decided to come back the very next day for some more. Their beans and rice are good as well and they also have marinated onions that are amazing. Best of all the price is just right for what you get. Seating is limited on the inside so I recommend take out rather than dine in. I haven't had anything else so I can't say whether or not the fajitas or tacos are any good but I like to imagine they are :-) no joke I drove 30 miles out of town 2 days in a row for this chicken amazing. After our most recent visit I would recommend bringing somebody with you who speaks Spanish as we had a hard time communicating with the girl at the counter. And the online menu prices somewhat differ from what we actually paid but the food more than makes up for that I think. Why five stars and not JL foodie certified: I would prefer a cleaner dining room it was a bit messy when we dined in the first time. Maybe someday but not today. read more

Great tasting chicken! I have tasted grilled chicken in different places and this place has by far one of the best tasting grilled chickens around. The only thing that concerned me was the price. $18 for a whole chicken, tortillas, and a small side of rice and beans. Overall good, fast, service. I learned of this place doing deliveries. I asked for a chicken burrito and a glass of water. They seemed to have trouble with the glass of water. They get my burrito and no water. They claimed the cup was in the bag. No cup. I asked for the water to go with it and they said they have no water and they would have to charge me. El Rey de Pollo is attached to a truck stop on Ih35 and 123 in San Marcos. I've had their pollo asado and it was ok. What I do come here often for are their breakfast tacos. Tacos are made fresh in the morning and pretty cheap. Their salsa red is tasty, and their salsa green goes good with the chorizo ones. I think I may have seen a chicken fajita taco in there one time, but I'm not sure if I was still waking up or what. This place is so convenient and on my way to work. read more

Small place off the highway. Getting fuel you'll quickly notice the smell. Honestly those requesting a "restaurant" seating area, the few tables and chairs are good enough. After all the place is in a fuel station. Food is great! That's all I care about. read more

I've been eating here since 2018 and the chicken was amazing. I noticed for the last two months the chicken doesn't taste the same. It's like they took salt out of their seasoning. The chicken is dry and doesn't taste grilled at all. The green sauce use to have a kick to it, now it's just bland as hell. Please go back to the original recipe or get a better cook. read more

The chicken is outstanding and comes with onions/peppers and tortillas. There was enough for food for two in one order and costs just a little more than $7. I'm a frequent visitor of Austin and love the city's culture and food. Today, on my way to the San Marcos outlets, I stopped for gas at a Shell Truck stop pretty close to the prime outlets. I hadn't eaten anything all day and didn't really feel like eating fast food again, so I reluctantly gave this place a shot. It is actually located inside the truck stop and there are a few tables to sit and eat. I ordered half a chicken (four pieces of Mexican grilled chicken) and an order of their beef tacos. The chicken is served with corn tortillas, salsa, and this heavenly green jalapeño sauce. The food was served pretty quickly, and WOW, it was amazing! I just got back home and can't wait to make another trip to San Marcos to try this place again. The only reason i'm not giving this place 5 stars is because the lack of a restaurant setting. However, if you're looking for some amazing Tex-Mex food the next time you're in San Marcos, I would highly recommend this place. Its also a pretty big gas station/convenience store with clean restrooms...thus a great place to stop on your way in or out of town. I'm in Austin for another few days to I really hope I can make another trip down there for that amazing grilled chicken! read more

I walked a half mile, from the hotel, based on the reviews that I read.....This place didn't disappoint. Yes, it's inside of a gas station. Yes, it's not pretty to look at. The food, however, was delicious and plentiful. I had a half chicken, rice, charro beans, tortillas and a bottle of Pepsi for $11. Sure enough the "wild hair" that we had recently grown payed off, I was highly satisfied with both the food and service. The women behind the counter was nothing but nice to my group, greeted us with a smile and wished us a great trip. We stopped by here on the way from Austin to San Antonio and ordered the chicken tacos on corn tortillas. They were delicious! Simple but flavorful and I love the creamy green hot sauce. It's actually spicy. I liked it so much we stopped there again the following week. Also the corn tortillas are some of the best I've had in the states - they weren't dry or fell apart even when we let them sit and ate them later.
