The check-in process was very efficient. We filled out some forms in one area, paid in another, and then got our kayak in another. We went from parking to being in our kayak in about 5 minutes. Note that we got there about an hour after it opened so it wasn't that busy yet. We drove by later in the day and it was packed, so I'd say the earlier you can get there the better. It was also hot so water, sunglasses and hats are helpful. Kayaks are in good condition and it's about a 20 minute paddle south to the north end of the Narragansett town beach. There are also motor boats around but most were very nice and gave us plenty of room. There's lots of wildlife around especially birds so would be good for pretty much anyone. The Great Salt Pond, or New Harbor, is located in the center of the island. It is the primary…read moreboating harbor for the island as well as the main recreational harbor. There are three marinas on the pond, The Boat Basin (401) 466-2631, Champlin's Marina (800) 762-4541 and Payne's dock. The harbor has mandatory pump out and this service is provided for free by the town through the harbormaster. Moorings are available on a "first come, first serve" basis. There is also an area where boats can drop anchor. To the north is the recreational area; boats cannot drop anchor in this area. Kayak rentals, paddleboard rentals, boat rentals and a boat launch are all available in the pond. There are a couple of hotels (Champlin's Marina and The Narragansett Inn) on the harbor as well as a few restaurants.

But honestly there are sooooo many mosquitoes and horse flies here and they're relentless! We mostly just use this place to launch our boat- away from the vicious bugs!!

A great place to…read morestart Barn Island in Stonington is one of the best places to launch a boat in Eastern Ct. It has a huge parking lot but since it is so popular it frequently fills up so people park on the side on the road. No one seems to mind but it does make for a long walk back to your vehicle. The ramp is steep but the water usually deep so it's easy for even a relatively large boat to get under way. Once you are in the water you have several great options. If you are in a kayak you can go north up the Wequetequock river, or south out to Stonington, Long Island Sound, Sandy Pt. or Napatree Point. This whole area was absolutely hammered by the 1938 hurricane and a beach in the area used to be called Kitchen Beach because appliances ripped from cottages were found buried in the sand for decades after the hurricane. Fortunately no hurricanes have hit in a while and the area around Barn Island is called Little Narragansett Bay and is usually quite calm. If you want more excitement in your yaking you can paddle out to Napatree Pt and old Fort Mansfield where rocks, old fishing piers and heavy wind and waves can conspire to give you a near death experience if you desire. Pretty good surfing out by Napatree also. For something less exciting you can go over to Watch Hill and get ice cream and some good seafood or just land on a isolated beach on Sandy Point Island. This was actually a part of Napatree but the hurricane literally tore the spit of land away and is now a rolling island. If you go east you can explore the very cool town of Stonington. Barn Island is a great place to launch no matter what your intentions are or abilities are. Just make sure you get there early during the summer weekends or you just might be in for a long walk to get back to your vehicle.

We are in EH at least 2x during the summer and as my son has gotten older we've looked for low commitment but high entertainment activities- paddle divas checks all the boxes. They've got adult lessons, you can book solo time (a first for me this past June with Paddle Divas), yoga classes out on the water, and a kids adventure club. If you have any hesitations at all, they make you feel comfortable and confident and will outfit you with the right equipment / board to make sure your paddle time is safe and you build confidence. My 8 yr old loved his 2 experiences this past week at adventure camp and is already asking if he can go again next year (yes!). The camp took a little paddle field trip to the East Hampton Shellfish Hatchery and got a glimpse into some local environmental work being done. A cool experience that offered a bit of a local touch.
