Deep ocean is just a few minutes away with no - no wake zones. The drive to the launch has an interesting castle to look at. The owner has dozens of statues, gargoyles, and perfectly trimmed topiaries. Lots of people kayak from here. Some bring their dogs for a stroll. I've done some fishing and crabbing here. But honestly there are sooooo many mosquitoes and horse flies here and they're relentless! We mostly just use this place to launch our boat- away from the vicious bugs!!

A great place to…read morestart Barn Island in Stonington is one of the best places to launch a boat in Eastern Ct. It has a huge parking lot but since it is so popular it frequently fills up so people park on the side on the road. No one seems to mind but it does make for a long walk back to your vehicle. The ramp is steep but the water usually deep so it's easy for even a relatively large boat to get under way. Once you are in the water you have several great options. If you are in a kayak you can go north up the Wequetequock river, or south out to Stonington, Long Island Sound, Sandy Pt. or Napatree Point. This whole area was absolutely hammered by the 1938 hurricane and a beach in the area used to be called Kitchen Beach because appliances ripped from cottages were found buried in the sand for decades after the hurricane. Fortunately no hurricanes have hit in a while and the area around Barn Island is called Little Narragansett Bay and is usually quite calm. If you want more excitement in your yaking you can paddle out to Napatree Pt and old Fort Mansfield where rocks, old fishing piers and heavy wind and waves can conspire to give you a near death experience if you desire. Pretty good surfing out by Napatree also. For something less exciting you can go over to Watch Hill and get ice cream and some good seafood or just land on a isolated beach on Sandy Point Island. This was actually a part of Napatree but the hurricane literally tore the spit of land away and is now a rolling island. If you go east you can explore the very cool town of Stonington. Barn Island is a great place to launch no matter what your intentions are or abilities are. Just make sure you get there early during the summer weekends or you just might be in for a long walk to get back to your vehicle.

The check-in process was very efficient. We filled out some forms in one area, paid in another, and then got our kayak in another. We went from parking to being in our kayak in about 5 minutes. Note that we got there about an hour after it opened so it wasn't that busy yet. We drove by later in the day and it was packed, so I'd say the earlier you can get there the better. It was also hot so water, sunglasses and hats are helpful. Kayaks are in good condition and it's about a 20 minute paddle south to the north end of the Narragansett town beach. There are also motor boats around but most were very nice and gave us plenty of room. There's lots of wildlife around especially birds so would be good for pretty much anyone. Would highly recommend and would definitely go again.

A Westerly Gem -- We Had the Time of Our Lives! My friend…read moreand I rented a tandem kayak for the day from Watch Hill Outfitters, and we genuinely had the time of our lives! Harrison and Mike were wonderful from beginning to end. Harrison was patient and took his time making sure we had everything we needed, understood the kayak and launch, and had a general idea of the kind of experience we wanted. The launch itself was incredibly easy--much easier than several other kayak launches I've used--and before long, we were off with six glorious hours ahead of us. The tandem kayak was perfect for two friends looking for a little adventure, a little workout, and a LOT of conversation and catching up! It felt stable and comfortable and would be a great choice for beginner-to-intermediate paddlers. And what a beautiful route! We paddled through downtown Westerly and beyond, then eventually turned around and made our way past the Westerly Yacht Club, taking some time to meander through the estuary. Listening to the birds, exploring the little waterways, and enjoying the quiet and serenity was absolutely lovely. Six hours gave us enough time that we never felt rushed--we could simply explore and enjoy the day. When we returned, Mike greeted us with a huge smile and cheerful conversation while we returned the kayak to Harrison. And, of course, we had to spend some time with Ruby, the beautiful and lovable black Lab who appears to be the true overseer of operations at Watch Hill Outfitters. This is a friendly, local place with real personality--not just kayak rentals. They also have an enormous assortment of fishing equipment and accessories. (The sign at the light says otherwise) Asked the guy at the shop to work out a deal for kayaks instead since they dont carry what is advertised and he said he couldn't. We weren't willing to pay another $40 for parking to go back to the beach so went home early, upset that we didn't get to do what we went for. I would suggest changing the website as well as taking down the misleading signs in the area
