Quite classy, if a little crowded. We were here for a quick bite before a show, and so rushed through, but were quite impressed. The thing that sticks in my memory most was the service: really top-notch, attentive, professional, helpful, courteous, not overbearing. The food was quite nice. Edamame and chorizo for shared starters. Because I'd had steak the night before I gave their very fine-looking cuts a miss and had the pork chop instead. It was incredibly thick and very juicy. The cauliflower with it were spiced well and cooked just right. It's a bit of a pricey night out. And you'll rub close shoulders with the people next to you and staff leaning in to do their job. But food quality for a special meal was very good, and the service was some of the best I've had in Sydney. read more

My daughter and I were looking for somewhere to eat on Boxing Day. We stumbled across pony and decided to give it a go. The staff were fantastic. I could not fault them at all. We chose to sit outside which meant we sat at the long table. It's different, as you are likely to be seated right next to another family. Luckily none of the families were loud, so it was fine. You pay something like $6 per head for unlimited sparkling water, which I really appreciated as I LOVE sparking water. The cocktail list was fun and exciting but the menu was limited and heavy. I just ordered 2 sides- carrots and broccoli and was really impressed with the flavors they cooked them in. My daughter had the crab angel hair pasta which she enjoyed. I wanted to be wowed by this place. And to a certain degree I was - low lit tables, an outdoor balcony with plush seating and EXCELLENT service. The food was just very MEH. We ordered a Tanqueray 10 and tonic with cucumber for me, and a beer for the husband. Food wise we went with Wood Fire Grilled Lamb Rump and the JR Signature Sirloin with Chat Potato Colcannon to share. The lamb was the pick of the pair in the end. It was quite juicy and tender and sat proudly atop the spiced eggplant puree and cumin yoghurt but it was a huge slab of meat. The sirloin was quite tough (neither cuts of meat were medium rare as requested, more like well done) and the south American salsa and cabbage was drowned by the meat. The potatoes were dry and too fluffy. I would have liked more oil and definitely more cabbage, bacon and onion. There was barely any on them and it made for a very bland meal. After lack of sleep and a mind numbing morning I couldn't think of anywhere else to go, so I decided on Pony Lounge and Dining at The Rocks. I thought this might be a good idea after reviewing their off shoots, Pavel & Co. You may have read my review previously, if not, here it is. It was another miserable Autumn day in Sydney as I made my way down to the rocks. While the weather may have been miserable the walk was quite nice and cool with less people walking around then usual. I quickly found the restaurant inside The Rocks Centre on the corner of Kendal Lane and Argyle. from the outside I could see the efficiently run kitchen preparing hopefully happy diners meals. I walked into the trendy looking place with dark wood floor boards and counters, with cow hide and and rope artwork on the walls, which was all complemented by the lighting. I was quickly served and informed that they do not do take away, which made sense given they're a restaurant. Feeling slightly embarrassed I requested a table and was quickly seated. Already knowing what I wanted, I ordered Pony's Double Cheeseburger - Blackmore's double patty, smoked onion pickles, ketchup, American mustard. The restaurant was about 3/4, not bad considering it was about 1:45pm, most diners would have been finishing off their lunches. The ambience of the place was quite cool - open kitchen at the front and well stocked square bar at the back. made me think I would have to come back for a real meal with friends or coworkers.While musing to myself the burger came out which is awesome timing and was served with a small bowl of fries. The burger was large and had the look of a classic cheeseburger which always cool and lit up perfectly by the lighting in the restaurant playing on the golden brown of the potato bun. The bun was tasted nicely and was a nice change from the now all too common brioche bun. Biting into the burger the first thing I tasted was the classic combination of American mustard, ketchup with a hint of pickle and sweet smoked onions. This added instant drip factor along with the fat from the twin Blackmore patties. The patties had a great beefy flavour and were charred nicely on the outside and medium on the inside (a little pinker may have been better). Now I don't want to be controversial and I know i'll be judged poorly here, but it almost, kind of tasted like a Double Quarter Pounder from Maccas albeit a much fancier and superior version. It was definitely the sauces and pickle that are way too similar. This didn't bother me though because I am not ashamed to admit I love Double Quarter Pounders. All in all a great burger which can stand on it's own and probably my third favourite burger behind Baker Bros. Beef Cheek "Cheeseburger" and Rockpool's Wagyu Cheeseburger. I think the price point lets the burger down a little but it's definitely worth a try. The service was friendly and quick, having me in and out in about 30mins with the burger being served within 10 minutes of my order being taken. Will definitely be back to try the regular menu. read more

Just had my birthday dinner at pony! They were very professional in organizing the party and offered a nice fixed menu full of great shared plates and 4 options for mains, & dessert, all for a reasonable price. They let me bring a bday cake, and offered us cheese plates since we weren't taking part in the dessert portion of the pri fixe. The oysters and chorizo were delicious (and i don't usually like oysters) and friends said the salmon was delicious. My husband and I had dinner here on our first night in Sydney in May 2013, after spending one and a half weeks in the North Queensland area. It had been recommended by a delightful seat mate on my flight from Sydney to Cairns (where our adventure began). What a great recommendation indeed. The setting was great, and we were seated at the communal table on the covered patio area. We are fans of small plates, as we like to try many dishes, but not over eat, so the menu was perfect. Quite tasty food, well seasoned (had the blue eye cod, partner had the tortellini). A nice interior with a few interesting drinks on the menu. Be aware the portions are underwhelming in size for the rather high cost per dish and it is not exactly haute cuisine which might command the kind of prices they charge. I'll head to sake or the cut next time. Music choices on the night we were there were quite incongruous with the cool interior and customers - Neil Diamond numbers? Ah - no. Personal pref there! Great food, Excellent Service, probably some of the best service we received during our entire vacation in Sydney. We were able to get in on a busy holiday evening without a booking. We ordered the Bondi Punch Jug, with is about 4 servings, so its a "bargain" compared to ordering just one (or two). Kangaroo App was very good, light and flavorful. Mains we ordered the Braised Short Rib which was VERY tender, I didn't need to use a knife, and the Gnocchi was full of flavor. The Chocolate Croissant dessert was very good, light and not too sweet. This establishment was recommended by local couple I met this afternoon. I asked them for their top 3 recommendations for a great steak restaurant. We were not disappointed. Started with a fabulous vodka, chili and coconut martini. Appetizer of roasted eggplant and beans served with grilled bread needed a bit of flavor. Six hours into our first visit to Sydney and having a beer and brisket sandwich. Definitely two of my top ten words in the English language. My wife had the the market salad. I had a couple bites and it was good, I mean, as far as salad goes. Great view of the harbor, great helpful and friendly staff, everything I need. Why not 5 stars? 3.5 stars but we really disliked an octopus dish of theirs and they took it back so I bumped it to 4 Starters -kagaroo delicious tender meat not gamy at all but they just put so much pepper on it that it was overwhelming -octopus could not eat it, it was drowned in this clearish red sauce that was so acidic/bitter that we literally could not eat it. -flat bread good -soufflé very good Mains Gnocchi-very rich but good could not eat all the goats curd it was too strong Catch of the day-tasty but borderline too salty Cauliflower was solid Overall we had an ok meal if the chef would not have such a heavy hand w things I think it would have been better. Pony Lounge and Dining is a lovely, modern restaurant crafting innovative food situated in an assuming location. I literally stumbled on this place while exploring The Rocks district of Sydney. Dining alone and with the weather still pleasant, I took a table in the outdoor lounge area. I was quickly attended to by the waitress who took my drink order (a local Shiraz, of course!) I was in the mood for experimentation, so opted a few small plates rather than a full entree. I had the chorizo with tomato jam, the sweetness of the jam nicely contrasting against the spicy pork sausage. Next up was slices of wood grilled Wagyu with trumpet mushrooms in a soy sesame sauce. The beef was, as one would expect, incredibly tender and flavorful. The sauce had some good acid to cut through the richness of the Wagyu. For dessert, I ordered what was called a baked apple flan. I expected a custard, but instead was presented with an apple tart. Thinly sliced apples brushed with a sweet glaze and framed in a buttery, flaky crust. Complementing the whole thing was a small scoop of rich vanilla bean ice cream. Absolutely delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Pony and would recommend it to anyone visiting Sydney. read more

Pony Dining is a great little restaurant in The Rocks which has plenty of share plates that you'd want to try. It's Modern Australian (what ever that really means) and there is a lot to decide on including things like seared calamari and tuna spring rolls. And once you're done on the food you'll have to pick some drinks to go with them. Once you have your meal and drinks I'm pretty sure you'll be happy. If you decide to continue on with a dessert like panna cotta, it's safe to say you'll be even happier. Depending on when you visit, you may need to book. There is an outdoor option as well as indoors and the staff are good fun too. If you need to duck out to use the restrooms then it can be a mini mission to find them as they are outside of the restaurant. Or maybe that was because of the wine? It's a great place worth trying. read more

The worst dining experience I've had in 10+ visits to sydney over the last decade. The host was the rudest person I've ever encountered in a restaurant, which is saying a lot considering how poor service is in Australian restaurants due to servers and staff making the same $$$ no matter what they do or say (no tip culture, no incentive, no good service). The bearded euro-hipster guy who was serving as the very bad host refused to seat us at a table we preferred that was less busy than the original area we were seated. I asked politely to move to the quieter table, and he said "oh our system auto-assigns tables when people check in. Someone must have checked In before you." That made no sense, as the preferred table was vacant. He then changed his story no less than 5 times, saying "oh someone else booked that table before you." I said "but you just told me you can't book specific tables." He then talked in circles and tried literally everything on earth to get me to stop asking why he wouldn't seat us at the quieter table by the window. He became belligerent and nasty. Rather than try to do what's right for a customer, he doubled down. I decided to take my gay, no tolerance for patronizing BS New York dollars elsewhere. The restaurant lost at least $300 of business from my party of two. But again, they don't care, because they're getting paid the same no matter what. Don't be patronizing and lie and talk in circles to your customers. PS: I went back to see, and no one sat at the table or had been sitting at the table for at least the next 90 minutes. We had time to enjoy a wonderful dinner at another place not run by total tools after walking out of The Pony. I will make sure to let everyone I know how horrible this place treats customers going forward. I will never set foot in this place again, and I'll make sure to advise my extensive network of frequent travelers to avoid The Pony if they wish to be treated with basic human decency and logical, honest communication. Fairly pricey and not good food. I had the Vietnamese pork belly panini and it was extremely salty and too saucy, couldn't finish eating it. My boyfriend got the burger and it wasn't anything special. The best part was probably the fries. Our waitress was not very nice either. Great spot tucked away behind the tourist bustle of the Rocks. The restaurant itself is long and narrow and you'll be seated at a long dining table with other patrons but it's cosy rather than crowded. Pony was a really nice little restaurant. It was decorated nicely, dimly lit and very intimate, even when sitting a foot from the next table. The service was friendly, but not very fast and the food looked great. I say this because, sadly, I was not feeling well that day and didn't really eat anything except for a few bites of the french fries (which are GF in a safe fryer).
