The food was great at Pony Dining the Rocks. I got to try kangaroo skewers, which were delicious. The beef was also good. I got their Brulé drinks, which was divine. The service was decent. The food came quickly They put us right by the door, and we asked if we could move tables, to another one that was empty nearby that wasn't right in front of the door, but it was already reserved for someone else. Which would be fine, except they continually left the door open for at least 10 minutes at a time. In August, it's winter here, people! Luckily, the door/our seats were also right next to their open air kitchen, so it was fun seeing them prepare the food. read more

First time in my life I've gotten to eat kangaroo! I thought it was pretty good. A little bit chewy, but the flavor was good. For $33 you get 3 of them on a skewer. The $16 broccolini was underwhelming. However, the $46 lamb rack was perfect. I really liked it as the flavor was great and it wasn't overcooked. My mom loved the $20 chocolate dessert. I thought it was excellent too. This is a super long and narrow restaurant. Quite a bit of outdoor seating. Good location to the main hotels. read more

Came on NYE and had booked way in advance. They were very communicative and sent instructions due to the police checks and gate closures. This was a pre paid set menu where you choose the main and can order a drink package if you like. They gave us several appetizers which were all very good and enjoyable. Several choices for mains too. Parents had cod and duck and I had the sirloin. Medium rare was requested and it was definitely more rare and a bit too chewy in some parts. The dessert was pretty good with homemade ice cream and a truffle. Convenient location, attentive staff, and was an easy chill vibe for NYE in Sydney. Good but I reckon Dinner is more there strong suit than lunch. Lovey and many styles of seating, we sat outside and some high top chairs have backs, good for us over 50! We loved the friendly service and the prawn toast! The pasta with meatballs was nice but tasted like Indian spices, maybe fenugreek in the meatballs? My dinner at Pony was the best meal I had during my week-long stay in Sydney. The kangaroo skewers were so tasty, I went back the next night to eat them again! We were really surprised at the experience we had given that this restaurant is recommended on websites that have credibility. When we arrived we were ignored by the two maitre de's for what seemed like ages as they both gathered around the computer to accommodate a family in front of us who did not have a booking. No one looked up to acknowledge that we were there even though we did have a booking. Then the food. It was really not good. We had to send the limp tasteless salad back which only arrived at the table long after the other items and after we reminded them that we had ordered it and it had not come with the rest of the meal. We could not believe that a restaurant of this calibre could serve such an item. The lettuce was limp and brown (old) and the whole thing had no seasoning or flavour. My husband had a steak which was tender but tasteless also with no seasoning. I had the barramundi which had a horrid flavour served on some grain in tomato sauce that tasted like it was out of a tin. We also got charged for tap water and sparkling water that was not bottled. The lack of generosity at a restaurant that sells a small piece of fish for $44 (and you have to order sides) is amazing. Surely in this day and age where we all have soda making devices you don't charge for a glass of water!! We could not wait to get out of there! read more

This place was fantastic. They had a cool outdoor vibe in The Rocks area of Sydney. We got the seared Kangaroo for an appetiser, it was tasty and well prepared. However, it was a pretty small bite. I got the black onyx hangar steak for dinner. It was fabulous. Very tender, it practically melted in my mouth!! The cabbage that can with it was also great, and I'm not really a cabbage fan. It wasn't a great place for my kids, the kids menu is only spaghetti, but I really enjoyed it. read more

Wanted to like this place after all the good reviews. My friend and I were the first diners having reservations for 5:30pm on a tues night. We asked if we could be seated by the window which was more private but apparently they were reserved... ? So we were seated in a long line of small tables for two that were only 10in. apart from one another. I noticed the tables were sticky, even the cutlery stuck to the table. When other diners sat beside us, we were all talking on top of another as it became so loud as the evening progressed, unable to hear our conversations. Even eating was an issue as tables were packed in so tight, when our waitress would squeeze beside each table I would have to stop eating my meal just so I didn't touch her. Couldn't wait to get out of there after finishing our dinner. Left to get dessert elsewhere. read more

Last night's dinner was one of the best meals I've ever had! Everything was amazing! Favorite was kangaroo and lamb (I normally don't even like lamb cause gamey)! Now this is a great little place. Located in "the Rocks", Pony lounge served up,a terrific dinner on my first night in Sydney. I went on line and got a same day reservation. Now while is may not be necessary every day, I was here during a holiday week and I was glad I did as the place filled up very quickly. There are communal tables out side, but I was seated indoors at a nice two top by the windows. My server, Ricki, was over in a flash and I found her to be friendly, attentive and just the kind of server you would want no matter where you are. In fact, she was so great, I almost wished she could just pull up a chair and sit with me! The menu isn't huge but is broken into starters, main courses and shareable plates. The cocktail menu also has a number of specialty drinks which were twists on old favorites ( try the "new fashioned" as this is not your fathers old fashioned, old fashioned!) While I wanted the stuffed peppers appetizer, they did not have it on the night I was there so I settled for the chorizo sausage with chutney ( a wonderful mix of sweet and spicy) and the shrimp and salmon. The salmon was cooked perfectly, pink inside and moist. It is prepared in a curry sauce which is an interesting contrast to the other flavors. And for dessert- try the crumb cake or the truffles. Both were certainly "calorie worthy"! The wine list was also quite nice and again the server did a terrific job of helping me to better understand Australian wines of which I am less familiar. All in all, dinner ran about $100 for a couple of drinks, dinner and dessert which felt reasonable given the quantity and quality if the food I received. But the best thing about Pony has to be the people who work there. From the hostess, to the person who brought the food to my terrific server, Ricki, I felt welcomed and pampered. Loved, loved, loved everything about this restaurant. A wonderful modern restaurant tucked away in a charming street in The Rocks. The vibe is fresh and loungy .. such an incredible buzz in the air. The coat hooks in the outdoor area is a big Plus. But the pluses don't stop here. Lets start with the food - the chilli almonds and olives are great to snack on while sipping on some incredible cocktails - a must try is the Show Pony, this cocktail is every bit the Show Pony - gorgeous flame from a rum filled passionfruit shell sitting in the drink. Mains are cooked to perfection and the taste is just divine. It was a shame we did not try the desserts. The ambience is wonderful outside - long tables encourage conversation between groups of diners, social in all its glory. The waiters are attentive and extremely polite. They were there to fill up your water, to neatly place your napkin on your lap on arrival and fold it neatly in front of you if you happen to leave it on the table. For the smokers out there, there is a lounge area toward the back which is once again a social setting to allow conversation to flow. Will definitely be back to try those desserts. The manager sat us right before the kitchen closed, but the amazing staff never rushed us and provided great service and friendly conversation. To top it off, the food was amazing!! We had the calamari and cauliflower entrees, not bad but nothing special. I had the salmon and shrimp main which was AMAZING! My friend had the tortellini and that was AMAZING TOO!!! Other friend had the pork and was raving about it too. Don't listen to the waitress saying the mains are more to share, trust me they are reasonable, generous portions FOR ONE and didn't seem to be particularly shareable. We all agreed we'd be left wanting if we tried to share any of the mains between two. I hate sharing anyway. Sharing is for suckers. I'm very territorial about my food, lol. I can't wait for this share plate fad to be over. It's a super sleek, dark, sexy restaurant. Staff are really nice, good service.
