My girlfriend was missing Asian food so we came by the "Chinatown" of Copenhagen. It's a bit difficult to get to since there's construction but the wish quickest way is to probably cut through the train station. We ordered several dishes including tom yom soup, spring rolls, pork red curry, and pork Thai basil. Everything was really quite good. The tom yom was one of the best I've ever had. I asked for extra spicy and it wasn't, but he provided pepper flakes that would make a grown man cry, so I was satisfied. Now, again, they also charge for tap water here. Sometimes it makes more sense just to drink beer since it's about the same price. And speak of price, this entire meal for lunch would probably run $40 in New York. I'm Copenhagen, it was closer to $80. If you think of it on those terms, this wasn't worth it. But if you take the comparison out and base it purely on the quality and quantity, it was good and worth a 4 star review. read more

Wonderful restaurant! My husband and I were very happy with our meal here. The staff was very accommodating. Our waitress spoke English and easily helped us make excellent decisions. The breaded fried shrimp appetizer was outstanding!, crunchy flavorful and perfectly cooked. The Pad Thai was delicious. They do charge for ice water. It's served in a tall glass with ice. First of all: Don't look into the leather menu book with all the usual Thai fare you could find in other Thai restaurants. Look in the other book with the Thai specialities, and you're on safe water from this moment on. I have had​ fellow yelper Nafisah ​W to tell me what to eat in Poonchai and she told me to avoid all the curry and the ordinary Thai food that most people in the western hemisphere would usually order. Go for the whole fish, she said, and so I did. The deep fried Tilapia with the red curry sauce was divine, and so was the pork laab (I like the way the waitress described it as a minced meat salad (my kind of salad!!)). The fish was as good as I had imagined to be and the pork laab was full of flavour, with the mint and the tangy citrus juice. To end our lunch experience we decided to share mango & sticky rice, a dessert that is so commonly found in Thailand but hard to find in Copenhagen, this place is one of the places to go for that. The bill came around 560 kr for the two of us, with beer included, it might feel a little bit expensive for such Thai restaurant (the mango & sticky rice was 160kr (?) for itself) but with the fish, it felt almost worth it. After 3 days of flight delays, i got here late, but, being next to the central stations, they saw i was tired (possibly drunk) and hungry, and they allowed me to order carry out. WOW. Was visiting Copenhagen on the last leg of our Euro trip and was reallllyyy craving asian food. I caved in and walked into Poonchai simply because I could not have another meal with bread and cheese. Pros: - Great location near Central Station - Authentic restaurant and nice decor and feel (servers were thai and my husband spoke to them a bit in thai) - Nice strong flavors, a little on the sweet side and fish sauce heavy but nice Cons: - Expensive. To be expected since it seems like a nice place but probably seemed more so to me since Thai food is readily available in California for about $7 a plate. Dishes here are about 115-130 KR so about $20 for a pad Thai - Slow service - We asked for tap water and they brought us a pitcher with two cups then when we got the check we got a charge for miscellaneous cold drink :( Maybe next time I will fight the urge and save thai food for another country! read more

We were in Copenhagen for a few days. Enjoyed excellent weather. But this particular day was just gloomy and wet. We stayed at a hotel close by and while we were roaming around, we saw this restaurant claiming the best Thai food in town. Now this is a big claim since we have been to Thailand last year and tasted the best Thai food ever. But we were tired of the bland hotel food and craved for some spices. We decided it was worth a try. I am glad we did. This little place is a hidden gem. The staff was very friendly. This was refreshing since most of the Danish we met around town were reserved and not too open to conversation. The food was just like the home land - an explosion of flavor and goodness. They have a set menu you can choose from for 2 or 3 people. We decided to go with the menu option A. We substituted a few things to make it our own dish. They didn't have a problem with that. Stumbled upon this place with a friend - we were originally looking to eat at another restaurant in the vicinity, but didn't get a table - so we decided to give this one a chance. To be honest, I didn't expect much due to the location (right behind the station, at the somewhat questionable end of Istedgade), but we were both very pleasantly surprised. The interior is what you'd expect, tends a bit to the kitschy side, but the service was very friendly. They did mess up parts of my order and brought me the wrong soup, though - but I don't mind, because I got the Coconut milk soup and it was absolutely delicious (have to vehemently disagree with another reviewer here!). The Pad Thai was also very good. Prices are - as usual for Asian food in Copenhagen - relatively steep, but the portion sizes are more than fair (I didn't manage to finish). I ended up paying about 200kr for two dishes, but I only had water for a drink, so if you're going for soda or beer, it might be around 250-300kr instead. I still think that's absolutely acceptable. Summing up, I wouldn't take someone here on a first date, but this is a great place for a weeknight dinner out. read more

After scouring the area for vegetarian friendly dine-in Thai, my husband and I landed on Poonchai on the last night of our Scandinavian honeymoon. Overall the experience was fine, but I don't think this is a restaurant we would seek out the next time we're in Copenhagen. Service: when we arrived the server seated us at a table with another English-speaking traveller. This wasn't an issue for us, but the traveller was in the middle of his meal and the server asked him to move. The server took our order then showed up to drop it off 15 minutes later and never came back with a portion of my meal. Eventually we got the check and had to wait another 15 minutes to pay. Food: the food itself was great. There were a few vegetarian options (no fish sauce) and it was possible to have the dishes adjusted for other dietary restrictions. If our service wasn't so lackluster, I would've given a 4 star review. read more

I had a chance to visit this restaurant after had been curious for too long! We have a visitor from Indonesia, and since there's no Indonesian restaurant in Copenhagen (it is a shame :( ), of course we go to our beloved neighbour's restaurant. The service was pleasant. All smiling and happy and I love the fact that they appreciate you for coming and eating at their restaurant. A thing I sometimes miss from restaurants in Copenhagen. We ordered the fried crispy fish with chili sauce (?) And a beef pad thai. Pad thai was good. I did not try the fried fish but the man from Indonesia said he feels as if he was eating in Indonesia (We are talking about food authenticity here, ladies and gentlemen). Price was okay. 115 for the pad thai, 155 for the fried fish and rice. Ah we also ordered the sticky rice with mango which is super yum!! The mango was super sweet, and the rice has the perfect sweetness. An absolute must if you come here. Make sure to ask for more coconut milk though. I ordered thai iced tea for the drink. People who have been to Thailand will know that this drink is just super duper good. But sadly the taste is not authentic enough although it still has a slight chance to taste better. We were here for lunch. We ordered the Suki which was a glass noodle soup with some greens and we chose Tofu as the main ingredient for the soup. You can choose either chicken, pork, beef, seafood or tofu. This soup was good, and spicy too (gotta ask for extra spicy). My friend couldn't handle it, I felt sorry for her. We ended up having to add extra salt, but overall the broth was perfect. The other dish we ordered was deep fried Nile Tilapia whole fish served with chili sauce (Pla Nil Tod). I gotta say, I have had better. The sauce was ok, not that spicy which was suitable for this dish. The fish, however, was not crispy, it has soaked all the spices ( must have been cooked with the sauce). We both liked the fish chips they gave us as an appetizer. Oh yeah, we did order a spring roll, and honestly I wouldn't bother. It was too simple, and there was not much filling in it. You are better off making it yourself. For the drink, we ordered a pot of warm tea, cause if you want to eat spicy food, you might as well drink something warm. It's not pleasant a first, but it helps calming your burning tongue :) Overall for the price, if you are starving, and you couldn't get a seat at Magasasa (which is right across), I guess this would be a better choice than Good Morning Vietnam. ^^ read more

OMG! Was here for a quick meal with hubby. The atmosphere and smell in the restaurant is awesome! Service is quick and very friendly! We ordered the pad thai noodles with chicken which could have been better, for me it was a bit too oily which is why im only giving 4 stars. We had also ordered the massaman curry which was the star of the evening, can definitely recommend that! The place is just a little expensive for our taste, but I guess its bcs of the location? Good food, great location, and poor service On the final day of our stay in Copenhagen our family of four decided that as delicious as Danish food is we desperately needed some spice and descended on Poonchai. We started off with the coconut soup and spring rolls which were delicious. Then on to a green curry which was quite tasty and a chicken with cashew dish which was completely forgettable. To drink we had a pair of Thai ice coffees and two young coconuts - all of which were yummy as well. The portions were enormous and we couldn't finish everything. It was expensive - about $60/person - but that seems to be normal for anywhere interesting in Copenhagen. The location is very convenient - right next to the central train station - and the decor was charming in an old-school Asian restaurant kind of way. The only real downside is the service which was unbelievably slow and had that 'Why are you ruining my day by eating here?' vibe. In short, I completely recommend Poonchai to anyone visiting Copenhagen who needs a bit of spice in their culinary life. But I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. read more

Beware of this restaurant!!! It's over priced, too salty, but definitely the worst of all is the TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. They make you change seats after already seating you because they want to compact everyone together for new guests even if you've already started eating. One person at our table didn't get their food until the rest of us were done eating and when they got it, the order was wrong and the manager haughtily asked "is this ok?" after already putting the plate down and barely offering an apology. We took the food because we didn't want to wait any longer. While we were having dessert, they would reach all across the table and under our arms to pick up dirty dishes even if we were literally eating. When we paid, we just asked for an explanation of why the food was so delayed and they offered us a mere 10% off the one dish that came out 30 minutes late, it was also the cheapest dish. Then, when we asked if they could take 10% off the whole check instead, they got super aggressive and loud and said they didn't even charge us for water when we didn't even get water to begin with. They spoke Thai to the other workers complaining about us and the workers all gave us nasty looks the whole time we were paying. They also charge a 3.75% transaction fee for foreign credit cards and don't even advertise it till you get the receipt. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

I know what your thinking, why are you eating Thai food in Copenhagen? My wife was craving Thai tea so we decided to order take out on our way back to our hotel that was down the street. My first impression was that this place is legit because it was busy and all of the workers looked Thai. We ordered the Pad Thai and Thai tea with milk. The Pad Thai was almost $18 and the Thai tea was almost $7. I was like ok welcome to Europe. But when I saw them pour their Thai tea from a bottle over ice and added some milk, I knew that this place was going to disappoint. Low and behold we got our Pad Thai, which was half the portion of the size we get back at home. I can honestly say that this was one of the worst Pad Thai I have ever ate. I lowered my standards for them because I have had some of the best Thai food in Thailand and in California. The dish was very sour and very salty. This was soooo good. The spicy is really spicy but even though it burns my mouth, it tastes so good that I cannot help but keep eating it. There are non-spicy options too. The veggies was cooked al dente in which you would not think it to be a feat, but so many people overcook it so it has no texture, but here, all the stir fry veggies are crisp and deliciously seasoned. The service was great and the waitresses were so attentive and kind. They even served rice as a heart. I heart Poonchai! The decor could use a bit updating.
