Took my car to Poor Man's Auto because I had a coolant leak that I suspected was coming from the water pump. I told them that upfront, but they insisted it was the lower radiator hose and charged me $150 to replace it. I drove the car the next day and the same exact leak was still there nothing was fixed. They told me to bring it back four days later. During this whole process, they never gave me a single update unless I called them first. They kept my car overnight without telling me. On the final day, I was told the issue was "figured out" and it would be ready the same day. An hour before closing, I called again (because of course, no update), and they admitted it was still leaking. At that point, I took my car elsewhere--turns out, it was the water pump the entire time, just like I said from the start. Save your time and money. This place lacks communication, accountability, and clearly, accurate diagnostics. read more

Hey there. I don't usually review but I got a damn nail in my tire and had no clue what to do so I tried out Poor Man's. I walked on in and they fixed it in like 10 mins at a totally great rate. I'm coming back for sure. read more

Great little shop-won't install anything you don't need even if you think that's the problem-went in for a brake job-ended up being a loose nut of some sort-charged us $12 for the tire rotation we wanted Many other times Ive used him as well esp oil changes read more

My husband and I have used Poor Man's since 1999 and referred others to them when they were having issues with their cars. However, I recent experience was a disappointment. My husband took his car in on a Monday and was told they would get to it the next day. However, when he went by there Tuesday afternoon, it had not been touched. He was told at that time, they were about to start on it. He was back there Wednesday, and nothing had been done. Both times, he said no one was working. They were standing around smoking cigarettes and talking. He told them he would have it picked up on Thursday to take it to the dealership. They said nothing. Well here I go letting out a secret of Cape Coral. An honest and great auto repair shop. This place has been around for 30 years. They sometimes have more business than they can handle. It is an old school garage. No free coffee ,TV, donuts, only free rides if available , .75 soda machine , a small 3 chair waiting room. Pin up pics in the garage. A Man Man Garage. ...(Remember The Duke, John Wayne) What do they have, fair rates, good work and honest dealing. 2 weeks ago I went into the garage to have some work done according to my service guide. The guy said brake fluid ,coolant ,power steering ,not necessary unless there an issue. Or change in color. Sounded common sense to me. 1 week later my strut was making noise. They check it out , gave me a statement of the problem.. I made an appointment./estimate. In the meantime, while I waited, I had ask customers of their experience here. All good reports..... Almost all had been coming here for 10-20 years and all by word of mouth. At home I checked on line made phone calls... In the 4-5 estimates by phone most were 100.00 or more higher in cost. Same on-line. This was a simple fix. The only problem I ran into was getting a ride and timing. Since POOR MAN is so popular you have to be forgiving. (While chatting with the owner he mention he did a $18,000.00 week a week or so ago ) Its a small shop with only 2-3 guys (owner included) and some part timers. Sounds good. So if you are willing to save some money and want to take a chance on others experience. Give them a try. Be aware they are back from Pine Island about 150 yards and the only landmark at this time is a green Bus Stop bench. My gps got me lost the first time. read more

Oct. 09, 2019 Was told my vehicle needed a different motor. I agreed the motor in the vehicle sounded like it wanted to throw up it's pistons, valves... Was told it would be completed in 10 days. Gave some money down to set the wheels in motion. Oct. 25, 2019 I didn't receive any calls from PMAs. I figured the plan is the same. I went by this morning and noticed the car sitting in the place as where I left it parked at PMA 9 days earlier. Not a good sign. I asked to see the owner (JGB), but be was test driving a vehicle. I spoke to the person that was supposed to have been doing the work on the vehicle. He said he has my vehicles engine but he had been stuck working on another vehicle (for 9 days?) and had not done anything on my vehicle. (keep in mind) he is telling me this as he is under the hood and working on a different vehicle...and not mine. I had just turned in the rental car and can not spend money for rental car for this coming week. I'm a single working mom with 3 children that I have to take to school and day care. I was really counting on having this vehicle today, or at the latest tomorrow (Sat. 10/26). The tech said he will try to have it ready this Tuesday (10/29/2019). I'm trusting (praying) it will be ready then and running perfectly. To be continued....Hopefully I can give a higher rating at that time. read more

Fri. Oct. 25 2019 Well it's been 9 days (since 10/16) and my daughter's Envoy should have it's newer engine installed as promised by Poor Man's Auto. The tech said he was coming in on a Saturday (normally closed on weekends) to pull the old engine out. I haven't received a call that it is ready. I'm just going on the word of the tech there that the car will be ready. My daughter really needs the vehicle to take her three children to school and daycare. She turned in her rental yesterday, so we are counting on the vehicle being ready today. I will withhold our true 'rating' until I call to ask if it is ready. Stay tuned....... read more

20 DAYS!!! THATS HOW LONG my Mothers car has been at this shop waiting to get fixed. It's still there. Because of this: She's stuck at home. She has to walk to buy groceries and carry the bags back home. She has had to take Uber a few times but that gets expensive. Especially since she's trying to find a job. Just updating my review from a while back that Yelp wants to hide. I guess honest review are not welcome if they are negative. The battery Poor mans put in in 10/16 just died 2/18. So 15 month battery life. Nice! Not to mention they put in the battery for no reason since it was actually a water pump. Something any auto mechanic of any value would have been able to tell you. Had been worried about our car, we have a FixD plugged in our car and it said "Low Voltage". Being from out of town I didn't know where to go so I asked my neighbor and he recommended Poor Man's Auto. We put a new battery in but was worried it might be something else. Talked to Eddie and he said to bring in next morning at 8am and they would check it out. Met with Jay and he put all the fancy equipment on and checked it out. Luckily it all came out ok! No Charge! I went to Poor Mans Auto on 9/18/17 (they were close to my work). They replaced the starter, both front cv axels and the ac fan motor. Price $1,085. About a month ago, I had to have a new starter installed, (I took it somewhere else, of course.) Cost $610. Two days ago I had to have two new CV axels installed. Cost $705. Now the only thing left to replace is the fan motor. It is my understanding that these parts should have lasted 5 to 7 years, if not longer. So, I can only conclude that they are either using used parts, or rebuilding the parts that are already there. Clearly I would never use this place again, and would recommend that no one else use them, especially if you are a single female. read more

This used to be a fair place with decent service. But I was blatantly ripped off several months ago. Oil leak in a 97 Camry. Over $200 for no repair. Brought it in again a couple weeks later for over $200 more with no success. Both times they assured me it was fixed. Third trip back and the owner, Jay, who I liked and provided good service in the past said he thought he had it licked. So he tried again for no charge but said he thought he got it this time. Well, I just lived with a slow drip for a few more months after close to $500 paid for nothing. But the leak just got worse. So I brought it to Bayshore Truck who showed me the terrible workmanship done by Poor Man's including trying to seal an oil leak with silicone caulk! I don't write negative reviews often but when I get taken to the cleaners, I'll call them out. I think Jay was transitioning the business to a protege (son-in-law or something) who isn't half the mechanic the Jay is but in his desire to get out, he's letting the whole thing go to crap. read more
