This place is a true gem!…read more If you are at all a WC Handy or Blues fan, I highly recommend you take a tour of this museum. It's tiny but packed with tons of information and facts on WC Handy, as well as lots of his belongings. Part of the museum is the Cabin that he was born in! The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and provided us with a pleasant experience. They do have a tiny gift shop inside for your souvenir needs!

I have been to places with more to see where tickets cost much less. Probably still worth a visit if you are a fan, but the price is pretty steep for such a quick, non-guided tour.

Honestly, it was the middle of the week but there was no signage of any kind saying 'closed' and nary a soul could be found on the premise. We walked around back and looked at all the various rail cars (several very cool, very old cabooses and a 51 year-old boxcar) in hopes someone would saunter by and give us the lowdown. But alas, we drove off slightly disappointed. The building is of Victorian design, having been built in 1888 by the Memphis/Charleston Railroad. There's supposed to be some very cool hands-on interactive stuff inside. Perhaps when I return I'll be able to write more.

Without him, much of early blues history would be lost. The museum is attached to the cabin in which he was born (decorated with period pieces not original to the cabin before it was moved.) For music lovers who understand how blues has influenced later musical forms, I think this is a great place to visit. It is a very small museum, but has a lot of memorabilia from Handy's life, and many donated items.

Visiting the Belle Mont Mansion was the highlight of my trip South. Built somewhere around 1828 for…read morea Dr. Alexander Williams Mitchell, the mansion has both 'Jeffersonian' and 'Palladian' design. It is definitely not like some of the plantation houses you see on 'Gone With The Wind' but it is still a handsome home made with hand-made brick, original wood floors and marble fireplaces. It has been under restoration for some time now as it sat empty for 30 years. Vandals had taken much of its original stair risers and marble mantel pieces as well. Over $335,000 has been spent so far to restore it to its former splendor. I came with my mom today as it was their annual 'Old Time' Christmas party, where volunteers and historians dress up in clothing of the 1860's. There were many women in hoop skirts walking around, eager to tell us the history of the place. I have read it was haunted by the family who bought the place from Dr. Mitchell, The Winston's. The husband, Isaac, died here in 1863 and his wife Catherine died here 20 years later. Upon looking at the picture I took of her portrait, I found an orb to the right of the painting. I didn't use a flash and no one was around me at the time. But the strangest experience happened soon after my arrival in the entrance salon. There was a large Christmas tree standing over in the corner, festooned with original, antique Christmas ornaments. One of the volunteers was explaining how a Mrs. Burke made these ornaments by hand. Just as she mentioned her name, an Christmas ball fell from the tree and rolled to within an inch of where I was standing. :Hello Mrs. Burke!" I said. FOr $6.00 per person, we got an in depth tour, wonderful refreshments, a choral group singing carols, musicians and ballroom dancing! I also reacquainted myself with the curator/guide from Helen Keller's home, Elizabeth Hargrove. She remembered our visit this past April! A most rewarding experience..Belle Mont is open for tours Thur.-Sat. 8 am-4pm and Sun. 1-5pm. If you're ever around Tuscumbia, please check this beautiful home out.

The Hotel is the "Renaissance Shoals Resort and Spa" in Florence and the restaurant is the "360 Grille." She and I really enjoyed the Renaissance Shoals and even had a massage and hot tub session at their spa, which was also a lot of fun! It was fun to visit the Rattlesnake Saloon even though it was closed that November for the winter season! I grew up competing in annual piano competitions at the University of North Alabama in Florence and my Grandma, sweet Momma, and sister would always make a day out of it! I took Kansas City BBQ judge training at nearby Helen Keller's home town of Tuscumbia. I've never visited the Frank Lloyd Wright "Rosenbaum House" on Riverview Drive, in Florence and I would certainly like to! Florence is also well known for its annual W.C. Handy Music Festival that is a week long and held in late July or early August. Joe Wheeler State Park in nearby Rogersville, Alabama was a fun destination for decades as my Momma just loved to have her birthday celebration there - her birthday is always Labor Day weekend and she especially enjoyed us renting a pontoon and boating around Wheeler Lake! We would rent rooms in their lodge most for most of these outings and make a weekend out of it. Be it music, architecture, rotating restaurants, saloons in caves, and yes, even the "Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard" just outside Florence, to Joe Wheeler State Park, Florence and Muscle Sholes really does have something for everyone!

The atmosphere of Lava Room might be the best in Florence, this place is really cool! Their food selection isn't huge, but that's okay because every single item is amazing. Whether you get their ramen, bao buns, eggrolls, po boys, or appetizers, I promise it will be delicious. My personal favorites are the eggrolls. They have a wide selection on the drink menu, but you can order any standard mixed drinks as well. I recommend trying at least one of their signature cocktails, though, because there are some really neat options! The only downside is the limited seating, which can be annoying if they are super busy. If you get a table or a seat at the bar, you'll have an amazing time. Otherwise, you might be standing along the wall waiting for a spot to open up. That's a risk that's probably worth taking, though, given how great the atmosphere will be while you're here!

Again...food, drinks, ambience and service are great. But if you enjoy karaoke, avoid.
