I can almost imagine the site of this former stage coach stop/tavern/inn as a weary traveler or soldier approaching its welcoming lights along Andrew Jackson's military road late at night, cold, hungry and exhausted from a long journey. Pope's Tavern still maintains that welcoming feeling to this day although it is a museum and opened 10-4 on weekdays. The place is full of the most amazing collection of antiques, original oil paintings, relics and stories told by docent and retired history teacher Jo Parkhurst. She went around the opened rooms regaling us with stories of this near-200 year old place. Every article had its own unique story and use. From bed=warming braziers to a 1846 Howe sewing machine to the simple hair curler that was heated over the fire..it really made me appreciate the technology we have in today's world. The Tavern was also used as a hospital for soldiers grievously wounded in such battles as Franklin, Tenn. and Shiloh. The men were from both the Union and Confederate armies and were housed upstairs. Around 32 men died hereof their wounds. Ms. Parkhurst said she had been asked by many if she has ever seen ghosts here. Her reply? "I have never sen a ghost here but I don't go looking for them either". The cost to get in is $2 for adults and 50 cents for kids. A great way to spend a day in Florence.
