After departing Tahoe, I decided to try 99 home back to SoCal. Around lunchtime we were in Merced discussing options. I was worried. 1 1/2 stars, undercooked chicken , feathers still in the bird. All kinds of warnings from the yelpers. But the long line in the drive thru made me curious. At the very least it would be a good story for my grandkids, you know?! This location is great, don't believe the haters. My sandwich was fine, my 5 piece combo was fine. Same with my Mac and fry sides. I legit went to flavorville on this visit. I went to Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen expecting fresh food for my family, and instead we were served biscuits with what appeared to be mold growing on them. This was beyond disgusting and honestly unacceptable for any restaurant, especially one serving the public. The biscuits had visible dark gray and green spots underneath and throughout the bread. At first, we thought maybe they were burned, but after looking closer, it was clear something was seriously wrong. No customer should ever have to inspect their food for mold before eating it. This is not just bad customer service. This is a serious health and safety concern. Someone could get extremely sick from consuming spoiled food. The fact that these biscuits were packaged and handed out to customers tells me there was either no quality control or complete negligence happening in that kitchen. I am deeply disappointed and disturbed by this experience. I would strongly encourage management to immediately inspect their food storage, expiration procedures, and kitchen sanitation practices before someone gets hurt. This location gets away with shutting down their machines way before closing. They close at 10:00 PM, but if you go after 8:30 (maybe even earlier) you only get whatever is left that's already cooked. It doesn't matter if you're a walk-in, drive through or even mobile app customer. I used to often forget that they close earlier than all the other fast-food establishments and would find myself there after 9:00 PM. First off, they lock the dining room at 9:00 PM, so you can only use the drive-thru. At every occasion, they start off by saying, "We only have...". This happens every time. Two nights ago, I placed a mobile order at 8:30 PM. At 9:10 when I went to pick it up, they only had bone-in chicken. Ironically, that's usually the only type of chicken I order, but on this particular night, I wanted strips and a sandwich. They had neither. I filed a complaint, and the response was "sorry that we were closed when you arrived and you didn't get what you ordered." WHAT??!! I replied and informed them that the location wasn't closed, they just stopped cooking food. I didn't get a reply. At this point I can only assume that the establishment in Merced doesn't have any real oversight, as this has been going on for a long time and I've seen many reviews state the same problem, yet nothing has been done about it. Update: 5/15 - still no ranch. I spoke to the manager who tried to play it off and say they had ranch earlier in the morning but ran out. I told him to stop lying to me. Driving north on Hwy 99 this morning, I saw this Popeyes at the same time I remembered that the sandwich was to be sold again starting today. The drive thru line was around the building, so I went inside to order my food to go. The order consisted of 3 sandwiches and 2 apple pies. The lady at the counter told me that it would be a 15 to 20 minute wait. I was OK with that, I had waited a couple of months for the sandwich to come back. After almost 30 minutes my order was ready. I took the food to the car and hopped back on 99 to continue our journey. About 8 miles down the road my wife informed me that we only had 2 sandwiches, They had only given us two thirds of the sandwiches we paid for. The sandwiches did taste good as did the apple pies. But there is no way that what we had in our bag was worth over $16.00. This is the worst Popeyes I have ever been to!!! Part of the problem with a fast food chain restaurant is that I never bother to check the Yelp review before I go to one. But I wish that I had, because this place completely deserves it one star. And not because of the food. I'm sure the food here is typical delicious Popeyes. I wouldn't know, because I ended up asking for a refund. I ordered my food which was a combo, they gave me my drink cup, I went to the coke freestyle machine. It had basically no soda in it. My options were Diet Coke and Coke Zero. Now, I'm okay with Diet Coke, so I selected that and of course there were no flavor choices. Basically the freestyle machine was completely devoid of almost everything, sort of going against the whole idea of what the freestyle machine is all about :-) So really disappointing, but not a deal-breaker for me specifically. They have a drive-thru window, so I assume they have more soda choices behind the counter. I wanted cherry, so I walked up to the counter. It took three to four minutes before anyone even recognized me, and then when I asked about getting Cherry Coke, they said, oh yeah we're out of that back here, too. So that's when I thought, why bother. And I asked for a refund. Okay, they said, fairly friendly and professional. And then I had to wait another three to four minutes before anyone could take care of my refund for me. Once the manager started the refund, he himself was on the register for at least 3 minutes figuring it out. And after he gave me my refund, he asked me to stay so I could then fill out another form where they wanted my name and phone number and reason for refund. Had I not being in a decent mood, I would have just left at that point, because it didn't seem worth it. But I stayed, filled it out, left, and then went immediately to Yelp to write this review :-) I don't travel this stretch of 99 very often, so it won't really matter much. The chicken and pop corn shrimp is delicious. Here's my issue...I always order 8 piece spicy, dark meat only. Guess what? They consider that a "special order" and tell me the wait is 20 minutes LOL. Dark meat chicken is a special order?! At a chicken restaurant?! KFC don't make you wait...hell, even the grocery store deli don't make you wait. But at Popeyes, ordering dark meat chicken is a special order. My husband had the most terrible experience in his life because of Popeyes, it was traumatic and devastating. He kept choking and coughing and no one would help him, even though we were in the car. I tried patting his back but that didn't work. Unknowing what the culprit was, he continued to eat, what he remarks as the best apple pie he's ever eaten, still choking though. He then realized that it was from the god damn cinnamon he inhaled from the pie. While he was having that coughing fit he told me to be careful not to inhale the cinnamon.
