We ordered 3 burgers a regular cheese burger and 2 bacon burgers one with regular fries one with onion rings and one with chili cheese fries. Ordered 3 shakes to take home. Can't wait we r hungry. H&W Drive In is a cool local spot in Merced. This was not a drive thru fast food restaurant. But, more of a drive in (hence the name) or walk up place. Customers can either drive up to order and have the food delivered to their car. Or, can walk up to the window to place orders to eat at the tables outside or take to-go. The staff was nice. Orders came out quickly. We tried a few of their items - Tuna Sub, Bacon Cheeseburger, Patty Melt, Fries, and Onion Rings. Their fries are crinkle cut in case that matters to you. We enjoyed all of the food. They were all well made and tasty. And the portions seemed to be on the larger size. Prices were quite reasonable. We would go back again if ever in the area. read more

One of my favorite burger places. H & W is a family favorite. They have amazing crinkle fries with season salt. Ranch is extra, but so worth it to me. In any new city I'm passing through, especially the small towns, I always look for the local burger spot, which took me to HW. First thing you'll notice is the prices. Coming from the Bay, whenever I see burgers under $9 I'm going to salivate. I decided to go with a double western burger and fries. Aside from the giant hair I got in the first bite, it was a tasty burger. Meat was juicy, crispy onion rings, and really filling. My only wish was that it had some mayo, I think it was missing something to bring it all together but I still enjoyed it. The food wasn't super quick, but I wasn't in a rush so no big deal. It's old school with the option to order from your car while a waitress comes up to you to order. They also have an ordering window for to-go OR if you want to sit at one of their many outdoor tables, a server can take your order from there. Been here many times traveling up and down 99. I've never had a bad meal here. The burgers are top notch, I love their pastrami burger. Ice cream is really good, the soft serve is the type I remember of old. It's not the nasty soft serve you find everywhere else nowadays. The star is their own root beer, great crisp flavor. At H&W, you really get to experience a drive in kind of atmosphere! Unlike the drive thru windows at your local fast food establishment, you park up at a fixed menu sign and wait for a worker to walk up to your car window to take your order and drop off your delicious burgers. My partner and I didn't realize the nuance of this establishment until we already parked in their lot and walked to the front window. Darn it. Maybe next time! Anyways, onto the food! We ordered their French bunned hamburger which definitely was large, juicy, and enough for 2, an order of curly fries and onion rings and a spicy link to munch on. Everything came out nice and hot and was a true experience of fast food. We waited for about 10 minutes for our order, despite there being a sizeable crowd of people on a Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed the burger, but found myself wishing for a bit more salt. I'm used to have a thinly seared layer of seasoning or salt on my patty, so it was unfortunate I didn't get it in the H&W burger. Nonetheless, the burger was juicy and had a good meat to bun ratio! And like others have mentioned, their fries do have a good serving of seasoning and crispness! I wish I could give negative stars!!!!! The worse place of the year!!! Never again will I visit this place. We have a large family of 11. Placed our order paid $150.00 for our food and they forgot items. Then, said we weren't charged for it. Fine, I'll pay for our missing food. Just give us the food we need to feed my kids. It wouldn't be fair to come home and not have food for all the kids!!! So I will pay for the missing items that she forgot to write down and we ordered one by one. BUT as they hand me the food after about a 35 minute wait that was initially paid for. She says she had to charge me for the missing food. Ok charge me! I'm willing to pay already for your mistake. However, instead of charging me right away and putting my order in because my other food was already getting cold. She makes me wait for the next 5 people in line to order. Then, takes my order, with attitude mind you.... And I have to wait another 25 minutes for a single combo meal! The worst!!! I will never recommend this place for anything!! I'm just a bit disappointed. I come here a lot and I always get the chicken salad. Today I asked for extra chicken just to make sure I was getting my protein intake. I was charged $4.99 for additional chicken so the total of the salad came close to $13. When I received it, it looks like the standard order of regular chicken. I did bring it up to them, but the kitchen said they gave me extra so. Unfortunately I have to go find my salad elsewhere. Got the French burger, which is a good value for $7. The roll was dry and the burger was rubbery, but overall it tastes good and hits the spot. The root beer is delicious. I can see why this place is so popular with the locals. Car hop service just means they'll bring the food to your car. Went to H & w today. Usually has been a great spot but unfortunately not today. Burgers were just ok and fries and zucchini sticks were very very greasy like they aren't draining the oil or something. Zucchini sticks were even worse oil dripping out of bag that they were in.
