Dan Smith's Candies is a quaint confectioner in the heart of darling little downtown Clarion PA. I…read morerecently stopped in to grab a sweet snack when my husband and I were in town on a quiet road trip getaway together. The store is surprisingly big and bright, with a large, long case full of all sorts of sugary treats. There was a wide assortment of filled chocolates and other kinds of chocolate candies. The middle of the store has several shelves of wrapped novelty candies, gummies and hard candies, gift items, and greeting cards. At the front there is also a small ice cream case for hand-dipped cones and sundaes. My attention diverted to a case with one of my favorite sweet treats--the fudge case. There were at least ten fudge flavors, or so. I asked if I could get a quarter-pound small box with a piece of three flavors I'd like to try, to which the very kind counter attendant happily obliged. I selected the cherry nut, peanut butter, and strawberry cheesecake flavors. I also purchased a funny greeting card for my brother's upcoming birthday. When my husband and I were back in our room later, the fudge did not disappoint! It was creamy, fresh and flavorful, with a little bit of the super-sweet treat going a long way! I was very pleased with my candy and card purchase from Dan Smith's, and would gladly stop by again the next time we are in cute lil' Clarion PA. PS FYI - Also housed in the same space as Dan Smith's is Main Street Emporium, a different store but that uses the same entrance as the candy shop. Be sure to check out that business, too! - https://www.yelp.com/biz/main-street-emporium-antiques-and-gifts-clarion .

When you enter the store, the proprietors always are helpful in picking out just what you're looking for. It's a small family candy business with delicious meltaways, fudge, and every other form of soft and hard candy you can want. As a kid, my favorites were the gummy turtles and rock candy, but I appreciate the Marzipan, Mint chocolate meltaways, and Dark Chocolate coconut clusters now.

So when taking a drive a bit off the beaten path of W. Lake Rd. in North Springfield PA, I was amazed with how charming the exterior of this place was. This is none other than "Peggy Gray Candies and Gifts". This has been here for over a full century having opened their doors for business back in 1922. Since I actually didn't plan on visiting this place, it was a surprise to me which made this all the more exciting. I will say that the exterior painting on the side of the building is what really drew me in this place. It showcases so much charm that honors Christmas, Halloween, and children eating candy which is why I loved how well thought out this was. I even liked the small steps that led up to the entrance under the red awning as this building could easily pass as someone's home in Erie County. During my visit which was on the afternoon of Thursday 9/14/2023, I came around 12:35pm. Parking was easy to find as this is a relatively quiet area and I was the only customer upon entering. Upon entering, I absolutely loved the assortment of candies; many of which seemed as if they were from a bygone era. This is what made this place unique with so many choices. This includes suckers, truffles, gummies, licorice, salt water taffy, homemade fudge, and the more popular well known options such as Charleston Chew, Pez, Dots, Nerds, and good old Hershey's. I mean we are in Pennsylvania, home of Hershey's chocolate. I even saw chocolate covered pretzels and chocolate covered potato chips. I purchased a few small items to take with me as well as a Boylan's Cane Cola that has a sweeter taste than big name Coca-Cola/Pepsi/RC Cola. Since this is also a gift shop, they carry a neat amount of non-perishable items as well. The lady that rung me up was very sweet and accommodating as much of the traffic that comes through the door is out-of-towners on their way to Erie, PA or Cleveland, OH. Best of all, they're open for business seven days a week; Monday through Saturday from 9:00am-5:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am-4:00pm. With the uniqueness this place has to offer, above average customer service, huge assortment in a small building, and overall great prices, I am giving "Peggy Gray Candies" a perfect five-star rating.

Candy, candy, candy!…read more I think it's great when a town has a place that makes their own sweets. But that's not all they do here. They are a fully functioning candy store. Set up kind of like one of those in a mall, but better. Of course I had myself a bag and filled it with all the essential candy one may chew on. Sour patch kids, chewy Sprees, gummy worms, Swedish fish, and the list goes on and on. They also have packages of candy too. No need to mix and match if that's not your thing. They make their own chocolates, and the display case inside was filled with very delightful items. I was tempted to ask for one of each, but I was able to keep myself in check. There are already packaged chocolates so you can just grab and go. If you want a certain mix of chocolates they are more than happy to oblige.
