I absolutely love going to Poppy Bagels. I love coming here after a morning walk or just a treat if I'm feeling it. I've had the seasonal veg, the green garden, the whitefish, and more recently the truffle honey. My personal favorite is the green garden, but I wanted to try something new. If you want something really indulgent and loaded, the truffle honey one is definitely both those things. The flavors are really full and sweet/savory. It's delicious, but if you want more of a texture experience, I'd go for the other ones instead of this one. I'm really glad I tried this though. Note, this place can get really really busy. Modern bagel shop with delicious bagels on offer. The bagels here have the familiar features of some east coast ancestors. We ordered a half dozen plain bagels and cream cheese. The crust makes a noticeable crunch when you bite through and the taste of pretzels comes through clearly. (The shop must add a liberal splash of lye to the water bath.) The dough inside has a salty flavor which can be too much on its own -- but as a result it complements the slightly muted cream cheese to make a tasty pair. The one issue for the bagels is their structure. The crumb loses its shape under any tearing or bending, which makes it hard to support a sandwich. We also noticed that the cream cheese had a slightly grainy texture. All told these are great bagels. Pair them with a cream cheese you like and rip in. read more

Stopped by for our Sunday morning carb fix last week! Get ready to stand in line if you're coming on the weekend, but trust me it's worth it. Located in Temescal in Oakland, Poppy Bagels offers hand-rolled bagels in classic flavors. Most of their sandwiches are served open-face and have a generous amount of toppings on them. Super grateful that they had a big rack with all of their bagels on display, because I'm definitely more of a visual chooser when it comes to bagels. We got the Freshie Garlic Bagel ($4 - warm bagel, butter, and salt), Whitefish Garlic Bagel ($16 - scallion cream cheese, white fish salad, red onion, chives, and dill), and also Truffle Honey Everything Bagel ($9.50 - black truffle cream cheese and local honey). Everything together took about ~10-15 minutes to be ready. While we waited, we grabbed a table in their lovely patio area. There's also a restroom on the way there. There are a few tables inside and some barstool seats as well. They definitely fill up quick & once you see their playful color scheme, you'll totally understand why. The bagels are quite dense, which I enjoy. For those who like a fluffier bagel, this might not be your favorite, but I promise you will appreciate the craft and their unique flavor combinations. The Whitefish was very bright and reminded me of cold-smoked mackerel, but I'm not quite sure what fish they used. The dill and chives helped to cut the brininess and it all came together with the creamy scallion cream cheese. Definitely my favorite bite of the day. The Truffle Honey had a generous serving of shmear. It was at least 1/2 inch thick on each bagel half! Also, beware of the honey, your fingers will be a mess after, but it's all part of the experience. The staff was very patient and explanatory with their menu. This place was on my list of a while and I'm so glad I made it! On the weekends this place gets pretty packed. I went during the week and it was still quite busy but no line. You can also order on their website if you want to skip the line! There is a decent amount of counter seating inside even though its a small location and a spacious patio out back. I came to Poppy Bagels with a local who was showing me the food scene in the area. Poppy Bagels is a cute shop with a friendly and welcoming team. They offer a variety of bagels and bagel sandwiches, along with a small menu of drinks. I'm a sucker for a Lox bagel, so I ordered one. I thought the $17.25 price was a bit steep, but prices are going up everywhere and lox is expensive. I will say, the fact that they serve it open faced and have a good amount of toppings on both halves does make it a bit more worth it. From my experience it's easily shareable between two people. The bagel had a nice bite and I ended up getting the everything bagel and both halves had a good amount of seasoning on them. The ratio of ingredients on the lox bagel was interesting, the capers seemed to be on the cream cheese under the salmon (which meant they weren't falling off as easily), there was very thinly sliced onion, green onions, and a lot of fresh dill, along with a slice of lemon to squirt over it. It definitely was a bright and fresh take, and the fresh dill didn't overpower the bagel, but did add the fluffy texture of the herb to every bite. We did realize during our visit that fish is the only meat that seems to be offered, so no bacon or sausage, but vegan spread is available. As you can read, people are comparing team Poppy vs team Boichik; two big players in the Oakland-Berkeley bagel game. And while Poppy is good, I'm team Boichik, mostly due to Poppy's is a much more chewy bagel. If you like that airy, chewy forward style bage, Poppy will not disappoint. Great location, bright and modern, with a few counter seating options inside, but a truly great outdoor area with plenty of picnic tables. The seeds are fun here too, they don't skimp, as you can see from pics. This was the first time eating a sandwich and I went with the egg, American cheese and tomato. Of the "big three" bagel shops in East Bay -- Boichik, Hella and Poppy, Poppy is my least favorite. I got a salt and pepper bagel to-go and it was a fight and a struggle to chew through the outer crust. The inside was not the fluffiest so overall, it was not a very enjoyable bagel. That said, I did also order a fresh garlic bagel that just came out of the oven and it was a world of difference in terms of taste and texture. The outside was fluffy and the charred bits of garlic provided a nice subtle bitterness to the bagel. The lemony lox cream cheese that I paired with my garlic bagel wasn't as smooth, nor airy as other flavored cream cheeses that I've had elsewhere; there was also a bit of grittiness to the spread. Here's what we noticed: - There are lots of predetermined open-face sandwich options, or you can just simply get a bagel with a spread. There was a good selection of bagel types too. - My wife and I split both a Seasonal Veg Sando and the Lox Sando. We opted for the salt and pepper bagel on the Veg Sando, and it was especially good. The avocado, fresh dill and a little bit of chili oil on the bagel was so good. The sesame seed bagel on the other sandwich was good too, but not a stand out although we liked the fact that there was a lot of sesame seeds on both sides of the bagel. Both sandwiches were done pretty quickly. - Prices are a bit high ($17.25 and $12.75 for the Sandos and $3.74 for coffee), but that seems to be the case all over the area. - There's a lot of seating in the back patio. Came here twice in one week. I ordered the everything bagel with the jalapeño Serrano cream cheese and then I ordered the everything bagel with the Lemony Lox cream cheese. The jalapeno Serrano cream cheese was delicious. The everything bagel on day 1 had the perfect soft, chewy texture. Overall 10/10. When I got the everything bagel again the second time it wasn't as chewy but still good. As for the Lemony Lox spread, I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting there to be actual pieces of lox in the spread (because Boichik adds pieces of lox into their lox spread) but the Lemony Lox just tasted like a lemony spread with a teeny tiny bit of lox. If I ate it without knowing it was called a lox spread then it wouldn't have even tasted like lox because it was barely noticeable which is disappointing for the price . They have similar pricing to Boichik Bagels but I actually prefer the texture of Poppy Bagels over Boichik. Also love that they are generous with the cream cheese because a lot of places are not. Amazing bagel joint in the Temescal! My friends and I tried their Basic Bagel and their Truffle Honey Bagel. Their Basic Bagel was $9 for a two-sided open-faced bagel with scallion cream cheese, tomatoes, red onions, and chives! I don't hesitate to say that this is far and away the best bagel I've ever had. The inside was chewy and flavorful, with the outside being crunchy perfectly seasoned. My review begins with the Great Ketchup Heist of 2026. I visited Poppy's Bagels for an egg and cheese. The bagel is delicious and, while tasty, possesses a touch of dryness. Naturally, I sought to sauce it up. I grabbed a handful of ketchup packets - eight ketchup packets to be exact - unaware that I was actually raiding the store's 401 (k). Enter: The Ketchup Guardian. Apparently, at Poppy's the staff isn't paid in local currency, but in Heinz ketchup packets. In pursuit of a heist, I was promptly confronted for my excessive looting. I foolishly assumed that my $16 bagel bought me the right to adorn my bagel with ketchup. I stand corrected. By taking the ketchup packets, I was cutting directly into this woman's livelihood, one ketchup packet at a time. The Audacity of...Condiments? The experience shifted form annoying to satirical performance art when... The Gossip Session: After the initial confrontation, the Ketchup Guardian decided to debrief the greatest heist since the Louvre while I was standing within earshot. I didn't realize venting about customers in front of them was the new gold standard of customer service. Since I was the guest of honor, I joined the conversation. Of course, the Ketchup Guardian doubled down on complaining about my thievery. She then weaponized her power by threatening to call her boss. The energy was purely, "I'm calling the authorities because you took too much tomato paste." In a city like Oakland, you'd expect a business to have a shred of awareness regarding the policing and micro-aggressions. Instead, I was met with an employee monitoring my ketchup consumption, weaponizing her manager as if he were a high-ranking official coming to discipline a wayward child. If you are the owner off Poppy's, please do reach out. I'd love to know if your business model is truly so fragile that eight packets of ketchup necessitate a call to HR. Pro-tip for future patrons, bring your own ketchup bottles from home. Better yet, find a bagel spot where sauce policing isn't the top priority. This bagel shop is such a vibe! I came by once after visiting the Temescal Library with my baby and saw a sign saying the store was closed. Fast forward to today, after taking my little nugget to the library for baby bounce I decided to walk around to grab food to go. I was so excited to see Poppy Bagel's was open again. I got the Lox and a fresh squeeze oj. Both were amazinggggg. I was even offered a baby bagel for my 6 month old. What a sweet gesture. I've never seen that before anywhere else. Dog treats? Yes. Baby treats? No. The decor is so stinking cute. I especially love their speckled stools. I can't wait to come back and try the fermented celery soda and the other bagel sandos. Lox was delish. Pretty solid bagels and cute aesthetic inside. If you are a fan of chewy textured bagels then these are definitely for you. They are soft but still have that great outside crust so to speak. I did find them a tad hard to bige into though. I enjoyed the salt and pepper flavor quite a bit, though I'm surprised they don't make regular salt. I was also sad to miss out on egg, my favorite bagel flavor. I opted for the plain cream cheese, which had a nice flavor but not my favorite texture (i prefer more fluffy). We didn't go for any of the sandwich options, as they were a little on the pricey side. As far as wait time, there was definitely a line on a late Saturday morning. I would recommend you arrive earlier or during the week if you're in a rush. Personally, I don't think it was worth the wait, but it seemed like everyone else in line had visited before. Great bagels, with a perfect chew. This casual bagel shop does not disappoint if you're in it for "authentic hand rolled bagels". They also have amazing cream cheese flavors and delicious "sandos" mostly served open face. Warning these sandwiches are also mostly cream cheese based, you're not going to find a bacon egg and cheese sandwich here, so if that's what you're looking for this is not the spot, they do have an egg and cheese sandwich but only on weekday days. The sandwiches I have tried, however, were fantastic with some unique flavor combinations. I've had the lox, green garden, and spicy & sweet sandwiches. All were delicious, I'm usually a lox bagel girl but wow was I surprised by how much I loved their green garden! The combination of the spicy jalapeño Serrano cream cheese, salty briny olives, fresh cucumber, and lemon hit all my favorite flavors, and wasn't something I'd had before where the lox, was good, but predictable (thought of course it's a classic for a reason). My friend got the egg & cheese both times because it was so good and filling. I tried the green garden and then the season veg. Both were very good and beautifully made. They were expensive, but show me an in-house bagel that isn't. The inside is very cute and bright! The staff is very nice. I would love to stay and eat in some day. The only reason this has four stars instead of five is because of two things. First, their website clearly says that the order will be done at the time it gives you because they are usually very busy, and they cannot re-warm them for you if you're late etc. However, this time is clearly auto-generated and arbitrary because both times I went to pick up they started making the bagels when I spoke to the cashier. They didn't seem that busy either time. The second thing is that for some reason, their online checkout gives you the option to put a name but then it overrides it as soon as you finish paying with whatever name is attached to their system. Both times I went to pick up it was under a name I haven't gone by in a decade. I don't think this is directly the business's fault because it happened one other time at a different restaurant during this visit so clearly that name is attached to Google pay or something, but it is annoying that the site asks you for a name only to ignore it. My coworker ordered a couple dozen bagels from here for our office and I picked them up. The bagels were ready exactly at the estimated time provided at the time of the online order. The person working the register let me know the estimate time when I arrived early. I was pleasantly surprised that the 2 dozen bagels were all toasted and sliced! The bagels were delicious, nice crispy outside and soft on the inside. The cream cheeses were delicious too. Can't recommend this place enough (my coworkers loved it too)! read more

Previously, I thought the East Bay's only premier bagel shop was Boichik on College, but I'm happy to announce a solid contender for the best gourmet bagel: Poppy's Bagels. Similar to how I use a Korean restaurant's kimchi to gauge their food's quality, a standard everything bagel with cream cheese becomes my go-to for my first-time visits at a bagel shop. The Poppy's everything is a paradigm for bagels - classically chewy, littered with savory everything seasoning, and delicately moist in the interior. The lemony lox spread I had with it was also incredible. Usually, lox cream cheeses can be just okay for me; it's hard to mess up such a simple spread. But, the unique addition of the lemon juice was perfectly subtle yet delectable. The attention to detail with every order is outstanding. The kitchen ensures to make every bagel aesthetically pleasing; despite this being a lost cause as I'm sure every bagel gets gobbled up and disappears into crumbs within five minutes. As experienced today, Poppy Bagels is ideal for any breakfast / brunch / lunch date. The staff are kind and the seating area (outside) is beautiful and spacious.
