Such a cute cafe with a parking lot for convenience and a bit of indoor and outdoor seating. I'm already a fan of the SF location at the ferry building. But I like this place so much more. Lots of baked treats to choose from and an appetizing menu of hot food items and beverages. This past Saturday, I went with the bacon olive & cheese spiral and mariposa mcbiscuit with bacon. The pastry was warm and fluffy, and full of flavor. And that breakfast sandwich was made perfectly and so satisfying with the light buttery biscuit, gooey melted cheese, thick scrambled egg patty, and crispy savory bacon. A couple weeks ago, I had picked up a pre-packaged set of chocolate chip cookies here as well and was concerned about a nut allergy, as they do serve almonds in some of their products at this facility. Finally got to try gluten free bakery. I got 2 cupcakes. The taste was to die for! The texture was a bit hard. I wasn't sure if I should have leave them at room temp for a bit. They were the right texture after being at room temp for a while. I also got some frozen bear-claws . Good amount of almond paste. It wasn't flaky but more like bread texture which I didn't care for but my girl loved it. Will definitely come back for more goodies. read more

I'm a sucker for cute cafés and coffee shops. When I was walking around the area, I stumbled across this adorable bakery, I definitely had to check it out! The decor and overall vibe were super cute. As I looked around, I did notice the prices were a bit on the higher side, but everything looked so good from the display. There was a variety of pastries on display. It was so hard to make a decision since they all looked delicious! I ended up getting a pumpkin-filled pastry and an iced dragonfruit matcha which totaled up to $15. The cafe was limited on table seating but I was lucky enough to find a seat. The worker there was kind enough to bring my drink to my table so I was able to enjoy my drink while relaxing in my seat. I also found a small table outside and sat down for a little bit. I love how the establishment is surrounded by a few murals. 5 stars for the service, the delicious drink, decor and pastries. Cute bakery with great selection a little north of Temescal. I stopped by on a weekday afternoon around 3 pm to pick up some pastries for snacking. I loved the decor inside, which had been updated to reflect fall. Lots of orange everywhere which was lovely. I didn't sit down but they have some seats and tables where folks were chilling or working. My friend told me the yummy tarts are popular here, so I got the flavor of the day which was wild blueberry for $6.50 and had it a couple hours later. It was like a pop tart but fancier and took me back to my childhood. They also offer a good selection of breakfast and lunch items. All of their other baked goods looked amazing as well. So much variety! I haven't seen some of these gluten free products anywhere so I was very excited to buy what I could! The chicken wrap (seasonal) was so good. Pita was a bit tough but I was just happy to have a pita!! Finding a bakery offering vegan cakes is very challenging. Mariposa offer primary gluten free bake goods. Luckily they have two cakes that are vegan. I ordered one for my GF's birthday to be pick up on Labor Day Monday, fortunately they are opened on this holiday. Since it was my first visit, I was not aware that it's located on the back side of a parking lot. Walking in it's definitely a bakery with friendly staff and many interesting bake goods and food. I had a turkey sandwich and ice tea; and my packaged vegan chocolate birthday cake. I went here for breakfast and to pick up some items for Christmas. The artichoke melt was so good! The bread was great and the flavors were well balanced. We picked up a cheesecake, which was so good, especially the crust. We also got cornbread muffins which were good, they weren't too sweet or anything. I kept hearing about Mariposa and had seen a story on TV about it, so when I was heading across the bridge to visit a friend I planned my trip so I'd be able to stop. I have celiac and one of the things I've missed is patty melts - I was so happy to walk in and see a loaf of "rye" bread! I got that and a molasses cookie (another one of my old favorites). This cute café is hidden away in what looks more like an industrial parking lot than a place for a cute café. Had no idea we had a gluten-free oasis here in Temescal. Walking in, it feels like a gluten-free baking wonderland. They also serve drinks and actual food (not just pastries/bread). I ordered an empanada - they only had a vegan option though it says more flavors will be coming. I'm always down for vegan food even though I'm not 100% vegan myself. It was warmed up quickly and served in a nice little foil wrap. I have to say though, my reaction to eating it was "meh." I know texture is the hardest thing to nail with gluten-free breads, but, as an empanada fan, one of the best parts about them is the flaky, almost kind of crispy crust, and this one was more soft, almost gummy? It wasn't bad, but not my favorite and not what I expect from an empanada. On top of that, the filling was ok but I felt it lacked flavor. After reading all the great reviews, I had high hopes. Unfortunately, not all of the baked items we chose were texturally good even though flavor wise was on point. First, the positive. The convenient parking lot is a huge plus for this area. When we arrived at 11:15am on a Wednesday, there were a few spots left. Another positive is the variety of items. What an array of gluten free treats to choose from! We loved how delicious the cupcakes and brownies are. So moist and not overly sweet. Now onto the negative, while the flavors were good, the texture of the croissant, cinnamon roll, bagel, and muffin were extremely dry! The croissant dough had a buttery flavor, but unfortunately not lamented and flakey. It was more like a biscuit dough. The cinnamon roll was dry and crumbly, not chewy and gooey. The bagel was like dry bread dough shaped into a bagel. The muffin faired better than the rest, but it was still too dry and crumbly. Would I go back if I were in the Bay Area again? Probably not. I'm in town from Seattle and had just a few hours in the East Bay - fortunately my friend is also gluten free and knew to take me here. I think I kept saying "my brain is exploding!!!" as I could not believe the selection. Seriously, iykyk - most GF places will have some cookies and cupcakes and maybe a cinnamon roll. I don't know what the negative reviewers have been eating but coming to Mariposa as someone who is gluten free is like having only ever been offered spaghetti with tomato sauce then walking into a restaurant in Italy. Like only owning t-shirts then seeing the runways at NY Fashion Week. Like using Dove soap all your life then discovering LUSH. Being a foodie and also GF is a special kind of hell, and if you also possess years of pent up frustration at flimsy breads for $3 more while your friends chow down on epic sandwiches and pastries... pray you get to stop by Mariposa sometime, and come with a budget. This was my upteenth visit to this space in particular (I also visit the Ferry Building location when I am in the city) the spanakopita has never let me down, ordered a bunch of those to take home as well as two of their take home pizzas and biscuits (best bread offering in my opinion with the garlic bread in 2nd). Got some new things: empanada (new to me, I keep forgetting to order it when I am there), the tiramisu and a cheesecake cup. The empanada was meh (big gaping hole, not enough filling, chewy instead of flaky texture and lately I have been underwhelmed by their breads in general b/c so much good stuff is available now in grocery stores [kind of happy Ike's found someone new]), but the cheesecake cup. Holy moly! Why don't they do more desserts in cups like this? Phenomenal! Like the tiramisu, the key lime pie and cakes? I would get a bunch of cups for friends, events, picnics, hell just myself! I moved here from vermont and expected Mariposa to be like West Meadow Farm Bakery in burlington, an incredible gluten free bakery with a huge variety. Well, Mariposa had a huge variety but my expectations were too high based on previous excellent gf pastries I've had. WHAT I GOT & HOW WAS IT? I got two hand pies: apple berry and cherry. I also got a cinnamon roll, a soft pretzel, a brown sugar cinnamon poptart dupe, challah, and pain au chocolate. The bread they use here is not like pastry bread despite it being used for that purpose. It is heavy, bready, kind of crumbly, and easily identifiable as gluten free. When I'm getting gluten free Pastries at $6+ a pop, I'm spending a premium to purchase something I couldn't make myself. A fluffy croissant. A decadent hand pie. This was not that; not worth the money. Perhaps if it had been a few dollars cheaper? Let's talk individual items: Challah: The challah was similar to real challah, but woefully underbaked and as a result, sort of dense and chewy at the bottom. Their problem is twofold: the tapioca starch or potato starch in their flour blend is too much, and also they clearly overmixed then underbaked it. $10 for a small loaf and it was so sad. Edible, yes, but not that enjoyable. Cinnamon roll: The cinnamon roll was the best item, 8/10. It was certainly flavorful. Good amount of cinnamon and frosting, but again the bread is just not the type to use in a pastry. Handpies: The handpies are just fine. They are not structurally sound. Handpies are also supposed to be made out of pie dough, but Mariposa opted to make it out of the same dense bready dough that everything else is made of. The cherry hand pie was weirdly chewy. They had enough filling though, which was good. Pop tart: The pop tart had no filling, just a whisper of what was once brown sugar now melted into that same bready dough. Pretzel: The soft pretzel was nicely salted but again the dough was an issue. I felt the texture was most like the gluten version-- not as light but definitely close to a real soft pretzel. Chocolate croissant aka pain au chocolate: The pain au chocolate was generously filled just like the real ones but the bread was not even close to croissant bread. That was so sad because when I looked at its inside it certainly had the APPEARANCE of a croissant. Like the appearance was flaky with the fluffy look, but the texture was not flaky-- instead very dense. Pastries were helped by warming in the oven/microwave on a low setting, but not much. DO THEY KEEP? Another big issue I had with Mariposa is that their baked goods don't keep well. I stored them in a cool dry place in airtight containers overnight and less than 24 hr later they were already stale. WORTH IT? It wasn't worth the money; in this area you can get better GF pastries from Life is Sweet. These items didn't taste BAD, they tasted just fine and the fruit pies had ample filling. It's fun to try and see. But they weren't good enough to justify spending that much again. I could've made every one of these pastries at home and made them taste more like the real thing, rather than this heavy mess of dough, and I'm not even that good of a baker. Schar sells better croissants at Safeway for $10. And wholly gluten free makes better pie crust for like $3.50. I mean they even sell that SAME crust for a markup there. I don't think I'd be so bummed by this experience if things had just been a bit cheaper. It was at least $6.50 for even the smallest items. LAYOUT The shop is very small and not laid out smartly at all. It would be cozy if there was just one customer I think, but Mariposa is evidently popular so there were about 8 people inside when we were. It's extremely difficult to get around and look at things when there's more than two people in there. read more

I will say their pricing on some items are a bit high though. My friend didn't buy too much and spent $75. They have very basic hot coffee and free self service water which I appreciate greatly!
