We tried the Balkan kebab sandwich, chicken bowl, beef brisket patty and for dessert we shared pistachio llokum, pista classic baklava. Walnut date baklava and honey cake. Food was OK, we thought the freshly made breads were awesome, the meat not so much and seemed overcooked and dry so that was disappointing om both our sandos. The chicken bowl was a good dish but the rice pilaf wasn't what I am used to growing up - i make my own at home with chicken broth and the taste is bit more flavorful that way but still a good option. This was my 2nd time visiting but first time dining in and trying some popular items: CHICKEN PIDE SANDWICH - flavorful chopped (dark meat) chicken on their freshly baked pide that's so fluffy, chewy and filling! Their Turkish Breakfast Platter of simit, fried eggs, sujuk, tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese, kashkaval cheese, jam, black olives, and house-made clotted cream/kaimak & honey, served with a small cup of Turkish tea on the side is satisfying enough for breakfast, lunch, or early dinner. It has the perfect blend of textures and flavors all in one plate. Ordered a pesto chicken sandwich. I expected it to be amazing due to restaurants good reviews and the expensive price but no it didn't even taste like pesto. I mostly noticed a burnt taste from the chicken. Maybe the cheese on it was not my cup of tea but the cheese was not in the description of the sandwich so it didn't occur to me to ask. I normally don't bother reviewing even when I'm not happy but a $20 pesto sandwich should taste like pesto. The breads and desserts did look amazing but I didn't try them. read more

I went for the first time to place a order to go for a relatively large group, and out server SOOOOO helpfully helped me order and label everything by order name making it very easy to give the food out and for splitting our costs afterwards. We've been there several times for brunch, and we've tried many of their dishes everything has been amazing! The whole menu is great, and the food always tastes fresh and delicious. I've also tried their baklava and cakes both were really good. The prices are a bit high, especially for tea and sweets, but it's still worth it for a nice breakfast or brunch experience. The service is generally good, but sometimes they get mixed up with orders. Even though they give you a placard with your table number, they might bring the wrong order or have trouble finding you but they always fix it right away. The platter included dolma, sun-dried eggplant dolma, bulgur kofte, bourek, stuffed simit bread with cheese & sujuk/kashkaval, and a fresh shepherd's salad. Do not miss this place!!! To me, the highlight is their pide (pita) bread. Incredibly fresh and fluffy and HUGE, like giant domes. They sell them for $3.50 each and I will often go there just to buy them. They also have Simit (thin Turkish-style bagels with lots of sesame seeds) which you can buy as well. The honey cake is good too. Last time I went we got the egg in a hole and Californian breakfast. Both were awesome. Highlight for me was the scrambled eggs and beef pepperoni that came with the egg in a hole and house-made clotted cream /mascarpone cheese & mixed berry jam that came with the California breakfast. Stopped by here on our way to the East Bay Vivarium and caught them an hour or so before they were closing during the holiday season. Decent amount of seating inside, but it's definitely a local favorite so I can imagine it getting busy. Very warm and welcoming with some Christmas decor inside too. There's a display with their baked goods that you can peruse before ordering. Staff was friendly and brought our food to us. We got their: 1) Turkish poached eggs/Chilburr: -Very eye catching dish. -It's poached eggs with a creamy tangy layer of their house made labneh (Middle Eastern cheese strained from yogurt) and drizzled with chili infused olive oil. It's served with their honey-toasted simit chips. -The simit chips reminded me of thin, spiky toasted baguette-like pieces. It kind of looks like a field of spears and swords or like a beach with surfboards? Either way, it's a lot of eggs and you can generously layer it on top of the chips. -A bit sour even with the honey toasted chips, but makes sense with the yogurt. Overall decent. 2) Turkish Caffe Latte: -It's a very strong and rich aromatic coffee. -Boyfriend had it as is. I'm not much of a coffee person, but even I can tell it's roasted from quality beans and steeped perfectly since I didn't get a super bitter or sour aftertaste. You can add sugar, milk, cream, etc. to taste. 3) Baklava: -Actually wanted to try the regular one and the chocolate one but I don't think they heard me correctly and gave me 2 of the regular one. -Very sweet and decadent, gooey, will get stuck on your teeth dessert, but if you get a tea or a coffee, it'll all balance out. I recently got treated to a lovely breakfast at Simurgh and man was I lucky. I've been meaning to try this establishment for a minute, so I'm glad I was finally able to get around to it. Simurgh gives Mediterranean vibes with a casual cafe feel. This spot is also a bakery that sells various breads and cakes. Food-wise I decided to go with the Turkish breakfast which comes with beef pepperoni, Turkish bread, eggs, a salad, and tea. The bread situation was awesome! Just the right amount of chew with nice flavoring from the toppings sprinkled on it. It's also served with what appeared to be honey butter as well as a delicious jam. The beef pepperoni was a nice twist as well given that I'm used to bacon or sausage patties with my breakfast. Given that I'm not used to this type of breakfast, I will say the novelty was a nice touch. Overall the platter was filling and had good variety. My tea was also very solid. I enjoyed my food and the vibe at Simurgh. I hope to come back and try more of their items at some point. read more

We had a delightful takeout experience from Simurgh. I had a hunch the food would be good so I over ordered on purpose: lentil soup, Cevapi rice pilaf bowl, lahmajun, and the list goes on! My daughter loved the lentil soup (as did I) and the accompanying bread. Especially the bread! My husband and I happily scarfed everything else. Menemen described in their menu is supposed to have fresh vegetables in it yet the one they served was clearly made with store bought expired tasting salsa. We have upset stomach and disappointment. I went to Istanbul last summer and was on the hunt for a Turkish restaurant before my trip. Guess what? I stumbled upon this amazing place! I've been here at least six times, and it's seriously the best brunch spot in Emeryville. I've had their shakshuka a few times, and you can't go wrong with eggs and tomatoes! I've also tried their cevapi sandwich, which is super savory and pairs perfectly with their pide bread. My usual meal here is the Istanbul plate, which has a bunch of kofte kebabs served with pide bread, potatoes, slices of pide bread, and grilled shishito peppers (usually at least one of them is pretty spicy, but overall pretty mild). It's been on my list for a while since seeing it on Check Please Bay Area! (Leslie Sbrocco is a Bay Area treasure) Finally made it in with my husband for weekday lunch. I got the khatchapouri which was soft, fresh, and delicious. He got a sandwich in the spiky pita bread (did not catch its name!) which he loved. I also had a mint lemonade which was really good. $50 for those 3 items. 5 stars for the food and now we want to return and try more from the menu! It is a pretty small cafe, not that many tables, and cold winds sweeping through every time one of the two doors opened so I'm not sure I would plan to eat in again. read more

I really did want to love this place, the servers are charming and it felt like a good community has been built here. However, strictly considering the dishes we had, the food was pretty average. Their bagels were nice and unique, the contents though were nothing out of the ordinary. I (we) have been afflicted by the abundance of sauce and flavours existing in the US like Pandora's box and these dishes sadly had none, providing a rather bland taste. For $22, it's like a deconstructed version of the Eggs in a Hole ($14) which the hubby ordered. The quality is here, value, and heart & soul from the friendly staff and cozy digs. I learned about this cafe from Check Please Bay Area. The food looked amazing, but the most amazing part is that the breads and phyllo dough is made in house. On our first visit, I wanted to get everything to try. We settled with the Simurgh kebab plate, some baklava, some simit, lemon pepper labneh, and house made yogurt. It was a little early to eat so we got it togo on the way back to Sacramento. We had a terrific picnic at a park in Vacaville. The simit and labneh was really good. The pide! Even after sitting under the ajvar sauce for the trip to Vacaville, it was still chewy and delicious. We wished we got more pide! The balkan-style kebab was great. It's mildly spiced. We tried the classic (pistachio) baklava and it was wonderful! We could taste the lemon in the syrup and butter in baklava. It was sweet without being overly sweet. We have yet to taste the chocolate and the date ones. We can't wait to try the Turkish breakfast and the mezze plate. Portions were generous and filling, and value was good (except for the cheese bread for $7.74!). I have eaten at Simurgh Bakery and Cafe a few times for lunch and breakfast. When I crave something different as far as flavors go, Simurgh is my go to. I believe it's Turkish and Balkan cuisine. I had the sabich sandwich which was filled with eggplant, hard boiled egg, bell pepper, zhug, mango sauce sandwiched with pide bread and a little salad comes with it. My wife had the bulgur kofte wrap which was also vegetarian and wrapped with lavash and sliced into rounds like sushi rolls. The cafe is set up so you order at the register and find a table and they bring it to you. Our order was missed by the kitchen, but they apologized and it wasn't long before our dishes came. The ambiance is very casual with seating for about 40-50. There are a few tables outside and there's parking in the back which is great.
