Came here for dinner while staying in New Bern. They have military memorabilia on display so thought it was perfect for veterans. Ironically they do not offer a veteran discount. Ceilings were covered with draping American flags that had a cool visual effect. They have an extensive whiskey menu and a nice selection of local brews on tap. I tried one of the local brews: Beerista, a white stout from Shortway Brewing Company. It had a good nose of coffee and vanilla but it wasn't carried through on the sip. It was a lot lighter in texture than a traditional stout. For food I had the short rib. It was seasoned well and was super tender. The side of potatoes were tasty but on the border of being too salty. Green beans were average. They were good to counter the saltiness from the potatoes. Went on Saturday eve 8/15/26 at 6.15pm with 8 of us in a group, was seated upstair. Service was very slow, food items were just okay, my husband ordered the fish and chips (fries) the fries were cold, the fish was ok, the coleslaw was warm and just enough for a taste(very small container, I ordered a large salad with blackened shrimp, the salad was in a smaller bowl and had no shrimp, our waitress had to go back and get them from the kitchen. My sister in law got the pork pot stickers, the appetizer for her main meal and hers came out after everyone else's was served by 12 mins or more. the wings were salty. My brother got the reveille and it was delicious. The jalapeno poppers were good, just need to be cooked a little more. I was sadden that I took a group to try it before I tried it prior. Horrible experience. Waitstaff was unattentive not only to us but to tables around us. Nver came by to check- meals: one served over cooked, one served luke warm and another missing side. No drink refills. Table next to us served dessert with no utensils - after waiting 5 minusts waved down another server. We waited 30 minutes for our table - exactly what we were told it would take. Our server was lovely. It took over 40 minutes to get the kids food and another 15 to get the appetizer we ordered. It was our first time in here and it was a Saturday afternoon. We had to wait for about 20 mins, so we looked around at the decor and the kids looked over the menu. We were seated upstairs and it was pretty quiet. The hubby ordered the candied bourbon and he loved it! He got 2! We started off with the fried pickles, Jalepeno poppers and pretzel bites! Everything was tasty and good portions. Our meals consisted of an order of boneless wings, cheesesteak with the cheese curds a burger from the kids menu and a salad. Everything was good and tasty. I really really wanted to love this place, especially after reading the reviews on Yelp and checking out the menu. Alas, maybe we caught them on a rough day. There was a wait this Monday at lunchtime, but the host was amazing, took our cell and said he would call when our table was ready if we wanted to go explore. So we did - we went across the street to the Christ Episcopal Church and it was worth the visit! Such a knowledgeable docent and so much history there! A half an hour - 45 mins later, and we got the call. We were seated immediately and much of the lunch crowd had cleared out. We started with the giant pretzel (billed as the largest in New Bern), which came with beer cheese and a spicy ground mustard. The pretzel came out super fast, but was sort of hard, which makes me wonder if it wasn't sitting around and reheated. The beer cheese didn't really have any kind of beer flavor and there was only a small cup of it. For a pretzel that size, you'd expect a larger portion. For lunch, the kid ordered a cheeseburger with fries, Hubby had the cheesesteak with tots and I ordered the wedge salad, hold the Turkey (who puts Turkey on a wedge??) along with a side of the candied bacon. And then we waited. And waited. 50 minutes later, our food arrived. Cold. That wasn't such a bad thing with the wedge, but not so much for the cheesesteak, the burger fries and tots. My wedge was missing bacon, luckily I ordered the side of candied bacon. Which was ice cold. I actually asked our server if it was supposed to be ice cold and she said yes, that is how they serve it. Wow!?! It would have been so much better served hot/warm at least. Then the brown sugar would have had a chance to caramelize all the way. Again, maybe the lunch rush had them in the weeds for the rest of the day, but so sad that the food must have been ready and sitting under the heat lamp way too long. read more

The restaurant is a great tribute to our service members there is tiny details throughout the restaurant that truly make you proud to be an American. This place is a neat place to stop in and grab drinks. This is one of the first banks ever built in NC, but now a restaurant and bar. They are very pro military and pro veteran. You can easily see that by the decor. They have awesome craft cocktails and they don't skimp on booze!! read more

The 3 1/2 star rating for this place is dead on. Pros: host very nice. Building (which looks like a converted bank) is very pretty--especially decorated for Christmas, quality beer selection (had Bourbon County on tap). Mediocre: service (wasn't bad, just adequate), food (average and a bit expensive for the quality). The BBQ Mac and Cheese was meh. Neither the Mac and cheese or the BBQ were bad, just average, but for $21, I expected far more. My wife's burger was "just a burger" and highly under seasoned. I will return, but this place is a bit of a waste of a golden opportunity. Not many great choices in town to eat, a prime location, but several things to improve upon. read more

I visited their bar on a cold Friday night in November after dinner at the Thai Angel down the street. We decided to do dinner there and drinks here, specifically because prior research informed me that they carried a whiskey I was interested in trying out. My friend grabbed a pomegranate cider on tap from Bold Rock. It was a delicious gluten free beer alternative with ample tart. I found my whiskey - Blade and Bow - after a bit of perusing the shelves (they don't keep a whiskey list because it constantly changes). While it's no real comment on the bar, I loved the whiskey. For their part, they were the only place I found in New Bern to be carrying it. The bartender was friendly and easy to talk to. We also chatted with some other folks that intermittently sat beside us at the bar. One pair of sisters was actually there for a wine tasting in the room upstairs. After my whiskey, we both drank ciders and seltzers for a while more and enjoyed the evening, noting that the bar (and the town, for that matter) was very low key and quiet for a Friday evening. The bathrooms were nice, it's worth noting, too. The restaurant decor is of a "support troops and first responders" style, including a wall of dog tags in the back. Sobering for a bar. So, drink and be merry, but be aware of how you got here, seems to be the message. read more

We just had lunch at Poppy's for the first time. It restaurant itself is really cool. Beautiful old building decorated very patrioticly. It is dedicated to Veterans and Military service persons. We had the Irish Nachos and the Fire Bird Sandwich. It was delicious. I would put it he menu in the Gasto Pub category. The server was excellent and gave a great suggestion to add Gouda to the Fire Bird to help calm the heat for the light weight at the table. The BlackBerry Cider was very refreshing. I would post pics of the food but we inhaled it. This is probably our favorite place we have visited since moving to New Bern. read more

Poppy's never disappoints! My latest favorite is their Carolina tacos, which is like a pulled pork sandwich in a taco. My husband is a big fan of their burgers and their Mac & cheese. They also have a decent wine selection (and also whiskey, apparently, but I don't drink brown liquor) so we will often eat at the bar. Service is always very good, and we will often pop into Poppy's when our other usual haunts have a wait. The atmosphere is very welcoming. read more

We love visiting New Bern, and my husband wanted to try a Gastro Pub with beers on tap, so we came here. They sat us upstairs, which was quieter than downstairs that had TV's on -- we really appreciated that. We settled on the Gunner burger and Napalm burger, with sides of beer battered French fries, and an upgrade to the chefs Mac and cheese which today had a 3 cheese blend including gouda and velveeta.... For the prices, I'd think they'd use 3 nice cheeses. Luckily our 2 year old loves velveeta cheese -- she shared off our plates and loved it. Despite being all the way up the stairs, our waitress was very attentive. What a workout for her! It took about 20 minutes for our food. The napalm burger, with fried chicken instead of beef: amazing!! We'll be coming back for that and the amazing fries. The Mac and cheese was devoured by our toddler. The gunner burger.. all the elements were delicious, but the burger itself was over cooked. I asked for medium and got very well done. They gave us free extra fries and a free lava cake dessert to make up for it, and both the waiter and manager came by apologizing for the burger. Will we be back? Oh yes, I think we will, especially for the stellar service, the napalm burger, fries, and Mac and cheese. Burger was OK, not excellent. I ordered the cheesesteak sandwich. As someone who has not been to Philadelphia and has one of the originals, who am I to judge?
