Morgan's Tavern & Grill was one of the first restaurants we tried after moving to the New Bern area and it has quickly become one of those places I find myself recommending to people and coming back to again and again. It's a great mix of casual and slightly upscale without feeling stuffy. It can work for a family dinner or a casual night out. There's just something familiar and comfortable about it. We've both dined in and ordered takeout several times and the service has consistently been wonderful. Our servers and everyone handling our takeout orders have always been incredibly sweet and kind. I will say the hostess experience wasn't the best during our first couple of visits, but thankfully that hasn't reflected the service we've received otherwise. The burgers are AMAZING. I've tried the Bear time Burger as well as the blue cheese burger, which is definitely rich but still so good. The ribeye was absolutely delectable. We've also had the crab dip, which was really flavorful, although a little mayo rich for my personal taste. I'm not crazy about their regular fries but I love that they offer sweet potato fries instead and the cinnamon sweet butter they come with is so good. I also love the croissants they bring out instead of regular bread. They're always warm, delicious, and nearly impossible to resist. Overall, Morgan's has become such an easy go-to for us. The menu has enough variety that it's especially great when we have visitors because everyone can usually find something they'll enjoy. Whether we're dining in or just grabbing takeout, it's one of those places I'm always happy to go back to. read more

Our first night near New Bern and we picked a friendly pub. They had a one hour wait for tables so we went to the bar and got seated right away. The bartender was so friendly and helpful. We are given complimentary honey croissants which were buttery and rich so be careful, it can be an appetite spoiler. We enjoyed them though, nice touch. We just wanted apps tonight with cold beers so I ordered the Cheesy Buffalo Fries. Read the description carefully because they are not fries...they are a curly potato more in the wedge family, not very fries like. Little disappointed because I was craving fries tonight. But thats on me for not reading it carefully. It wasn't bad at all. My husband ordered one of his favorite soups to get, French onion, and was not happy with it. He called it "fake". Unfortunately there are no half stars in Yelpland. I'm going to round down then, 4 stars for the service and 3 stars for the food. Came in around 7 on Friday...and holiday weekend so it was busy and we sat at the small bar rather than wait an hour for a table. We ordered a couple of beers but unfortunately there were no shouts due to a problem with the refrigerator according to the bartender. So we moved on from that disappointment to food and ordered a shareable of triple cheese fries and I got a French onion soup. Both came out at the same time after five minutes so I already knew the soup would be subpar and I was right. This was not a true French onion soup but the soup made well in advanced and assembled quickly in a cup with the cheese melted in a microwave I would guess. The cheese fries were cheese cheese curls and were okay but not overly good. I think if I lived nearby I would probably not come here twice. read more

Bestie & I came in at opening & were quickly seated. We've been here before so I knew to expect good food & service. However, that wasn't how that day went. Our server was either new or just off her game as she had to come back to ask me what my bread choice was for my turkey sandwich, didn't refill my drink & took a minute to get our bill. My croissant showed up looking as if it had been in a fight (not whole, ripped) and the sandwich put together so poorly I couldn't just pick it up to eat, I had to cut it in halves. Now, I've had messy sandwiches that are supposed to be messy but this was chaos, not messy. All in all, I think we just hit them on a bad day. The Hawaiian burger - though made more medium well than "medium" - was juicy. Shrimp burger was flavorful all around with perfect seasoning blend! The fries were a strange shape and deliciously crispy. The space inside is expansive - more expansive than it appears since the facade makes the place look like it's a smaller venue. The décor is well done with a perfect mix of rustic charm and comfort. From the bear statues to the wall hangings, there is so much attention to detail everywhere. Though we didn't bring a fur baby. What a pleasant surprise to hear Morgan's was open on a Monday for the convention in town. Even nicer was the setup they had outside with free snacks and water. We ate outside for tonight. The weather was perfect. Food was delicious! Our server was fantastic. What seemed odd to us though, is when the bartender brought my wife's glass of wine, he reached over the table to hand her the glass instead of walking around the table to her side. Same thing happened when the runner brought my wife's meal. Hello bartenders and servers. Learn some basic etiquette and customer service skills on "how to serve". This is the second time I've tried Morgan's but it's probably been 10 years. I would definitely say that it has maintained its excellence and charm! The decor is always so fun, with the adorable bear in the middle of the restaurant. Our server was very attentive and we didn't go without, EVER. The honey covered croissant was not quite as fresh is the last time we were here, maybe the prior day's baked good? Not sure but it was still tasty. The crab dip was so cheesy and packed full of chunks of fresh crab, it was so delicious that I just wanted to keep eating! Instead I saved room for my Bacon and Bleu burger with Mac and cheese. The burger was juicy and cooked perfectly with a generous amount of blue cheese and thick bacon. The menu says they use ground steak to make the burger and I can definitely see it as it was high quality meat. The Mac and cheese was filled with so much ooey gooey cheese sauce and corkscrew noodles, OMG was it GOOD!! Seasoned perfectly, and the leftovers that came home with me tasted just as good that evening as a snack. I can't wait to go back to try something else! read more

Morgan's was our first stop when we arrived in New Bern from Charlotte super hungry after our 4 hour drive. The menu consists of a lot of delicious seafood options. Morgan's is typically closed on Mondays, but a few weeks ago they decided to remain open for the convention. Morgan's had some issues, but was for the most part a fair experience. Our server was nice to us when she was directly interacting with us, but you could tell she didn't want to serve us once she walked away. I saw her do this to multiple tables, which is not good customer service. I can see why because she normally gets the Monday off and today she had to work, but that is no excuse to have an attitude towards your customers. We started off with the crab dip; which was cheesy, lightly crabby, and hot. They bring it out with pita bread. No disappointment there! We ordered our ribeye's medium, because apparently their medium is like a medium rare. When they came out they were well done (as you can by how they cook their steaks), or medium well. Our server knew that they were overcooked, and told us to cut into our steaks to see how they were. We ensured her that it was fine because we were hungry, but sure did wish that they got it right the first time. Their Mac and cheese is VERY sharp (strong cheese flavor), but fries are crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Due to the inconvenience, the manager offered us free dessert. Even though we were very full, we said sure because who can decline something that is free?? Most of their dessert was not made in house but they did have two that were, which was the bread pudding and a chocolate dessert. I had the chocolate dessert, while my grandmother had the bread pudding. Both are good. They give you a lot! Morgan's gets three stars because of the customer service and the overcooked steak. I am sure our experience would have been better if we didn't go on a Monday. But, they should still be "on it" every day of the week despite if they are normally closed. Wonderful service! We stopped in on a weeknight and saw several people waiting. But the hostess told us the high tops were first come, first serve, so we were able to sit down right away. The ambiance is very historical and fun- they even have one of the New Bern bears inside! The croissants were delicious, as we'd read from other reviewers! The side salads were very generously sized! It was also nice that the server could bring us oil and vinegar to dress the salads, when someone in our party didn't want one of their premade dressings. The restaurant was beautiful, decorated wonderfully for Christmas. We were sat promptly. Waitress was very informative about the menu. Unfortunately we were sat right beside the bar where all of the servers would stand and wait around so it was a little awkward to eat with them all there. I ate half of my burger which was okay until I noticed a big black hair underneath the other half of the burger. I brought this to the waitress attention and she promptly took it and offered to replace it. As it turns out when my spouse picked up his blt there was ANOTHER black hair underneath his. We both have brown hair so at this point it was kind of ridiculous that it happened to us both. Didn't try the Mac and cheese but we did try the beer cheese dip and that was pretty good with the pita bread. So as always just double check your plates! We've been to Morgans numerous times over the years. The food is always consistent and the menu has many good options. Prices are in line with others in the area. The service has always been excellent and one of the best things is that all the servers help each other bringing the food and clearing the table.
