Loved our time in this cute shop! All sorts of variety- plants, stationery, accessories, etc. My kiddos got some cute postcards and stickers for souvenirs of our little holiday! I had to snag a wedding shower presence that was packed full of charm for one very special lady and after seeing this shop's adorable window displays multiple times, I finally made the stop. Think vintage maps, aprons and tablecloths that could have been passed down from your grandmother (I mean this in a good way), clever stationary, unique jewelry made by businesses that give off an "Etsy-vibe", retro kitchenware and more. My shop local/I'm-so-jazzed-about-this-business enthusiasm fell a bit flat with the girl working behind the counter but that didn't stop me from having a hay day. My long time desire to purchase colored candle sticks finally happened at Porch Light thanks to their mass selection of pretty and earthy colors. This treasure trove has long been one of my favorite shops in Des Moines. Aside from being a feast for the eyes of both new and vintage home items, they have the most lovely artisan jewelry. Pieces you don't see anything like elsewhere. Their adorable and colorful hand-crocheted washcloths made by one of the shop-women are on my regular list for myself and for gifts. Their vintage stemware is another favorite. My daughters love to go there. My mother loves to go there. It is the easiest place to love. read more

Porch Light reminds me of a more affordable, more vintage curated version of Anthropologie.. If that makes any sense. The store was only open for a few more minutes the second time we went and the lady working there was so gracious and kind, telling us, "Welcome in! Take your time!" She also explained that their stock is a mixture of genuine and reproduced vintage. My favorite finds have been small zinc letters (perfect for my daughter's bookcase), sweet and graphically pleasing tea towels, and the loveliest greeting cards which I'm so tempted to just frame instead of sending them out to their intended recipients. A wonderful selection of vintage table clothes, aprons, and other kitchen items. But remember mom doesn't always want to cook she wants to write her son letters, so there is a great selection of stationary and cute cards that will bring perfect smiles though the U.S. Postal service! My mother and I spent a m-d day together in East Village and were completely seduced by this charming, professionally styled vintage shop. I make jewelry from reclaimed vintage bits for shops in Manhattan and Texas and felt the Porch Light offerings were designed and executed so chicly and richly, that I was tempted to buy from them -- when I can make the pieces myself. LOL. There is a wise, poignant and loving sensibility behind the selection of antique and vintage items there. The shop basically will shoot straight to the heart of anyone who has grown up in a rural world. I can't wait to head back.
