Struggling here not to give this restaurant five stars. If you are North of Birmingham and you want some fantastic BBQ don't be afraid to drive about 3 minutes east of I-65 on Hwy 160 to the town of Hayden. The owner had a successful food truck business that has grown to need a store front. We were a large party of eight and found seating at a large farm table. The table wasn't any fancy but we didn't come here to eat the table. A young man with his baseball cap on backwards came over to talk with us who we later learned was the owner. Overall we were impressed. The brisket is well smoked without the overpowering smell of wood. The chicken flavorful and delightful. The ribs well seasoned and tender. The pulled pork also was great, tender and tasty. Recommend the Bbq tacos as well. Do try the Bbq beans! If these babies ever slept inside of a can, then the owner knows how to wake them up. I was delighted to find tiny pieces of meat to accent the goodness. The zesty slaw was also great with a surprising kick to it......I shouldn't have been surprised since it is called Zesty Slaw. While it sounds totally delicious I was somewhat disappointed in the red potato deviled egg salad. It just was not well seasoned and there was no salt or pepper on the table. I know I know I should have asked. The cure could be a simple as salt! All in all and in truth this place is worthy of repeat visits. We will come back when next in the area and I suspect I will have to improve my ranking to five stars. read more

I've never left a food review but couldn't let this one pass by. The brisket was quite fatty and the "deviled egg potatoe salad" was terrible. HOWEVER, I couldn't let this review pass by due to the banana pudding... there was nothing but brown water hiding up under the whipped cream and vanilla wafer. We stopped in after we explored Rickwood Caverns. (Side note: You should definitely explore this cave if you haven't been, it's amazing!) The place is next to a liquor store, but don't let that deter you. Walking in, it's relaxed, open, and comfortable. Lots of band photos hanging on the wall, shout out to UAB, and others. The service was warm and welcoming. Now on to the food! We started with the fried green tomatoes, which are thickly diced in chunks and served with a southwestern ranch. Delicious is all I have to say! The tomatoes were plump, not soggy and fried to perfection. Crispy outside and a flavorful breading made them good by themselves, but the cake tipped when you add the southwestern ranch. They seriously need to bottle it and sell it. It was that good! Creamy, spicy, and complex. I ordered the loaded mashed potatoes with beef brisket because I love stuffed potatoes and will eat beef brisket any way you serve it. I was rather disappointed with the loaded mash due to the excess of bbq sauce, crema, and non melted cheese. It was just too much and didn't work well together. The brisket on the other hand was fabulous! Juicy, tender, and you could taste the smoked flavor. Absolutely delicious. My husband and my daughter ordered the ribs with fries and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was sweet, which is not our thing. It tasted like it had sweetened condensed milk... We didn't like it and wouldn't recommend it. The fried were okay. The ribs though, were fantastic!! You could literally see the coloration from the smoker. They were smoky and tender! My six year old ate four ribs if that reveals anything! Overall, we are so glad we chose this place and will be back again if we're in the area. The ribs, brisket, SW ranch, and fried green tomatoes for sure. The other sauces were okay. Very disappointed! This was my family's go to take out when it first opened and we loved it then it quickly went down hill. The last three times it was awful, the order was either wrong or cold or both. I gave it another shot because of the customer service and all of the other times we went. I tried Porky's Pride food truck while it was at Ghost Train Brewing Company. I was in the mood for something delicious to go with my IPA and Porkys had just that! I got their classic BBQ pork sandwich with potato salad and I was not disappointed. Although the price was pretty high for the food, I'm always up for supporting local businesses so I did not mind. The staff followed all Covid protocols that were in place but they could have been more friendly and helpful in recommending what was good. Delicious! We shared the Porky- a huge sandwich with sausage, bacon, brisket, and pork. The waitress, Mary Beth, offered to deconstruct the sandwich for us, which was a wise choice. Cheesy grits, baked beans, and creamy coleslaw were our sides. We tried all the sauces they offered- our favorite was the plain ol' BBQ sauce. Best ribs I've had. Good flavor, bones pull right out, and had as much meat on a half rack as most places have on a full rack. Garlic whipped potatoes had enough garlic but not too much to overwhelm. Best stop for food not far off of I-65. Pulled pork plate was leagues better than some of Alabama's well known BBQ establishments. As a plus, there sides were fantastic! The grilled zucchini was seasoned like the BBQ. The fried green tomatoes were chunks instead of slices and were a first for this southern girl and I will have a hard time going back to slices.
