    Handsome date enjoying a burger!

Great burger and fries! You know it's a great restaurant when it's full of elderly patrons that all know each other.

My friend and I visited for the first time today, we thought we'd try a place we have never been to. My honest first impression upon entering was, wow this is drab, this isn't going to be good. But our waitress was welcoming and friendly. I also felt that the music needed to be at a higher volume because it was really quiet. I ordered the pretzel with cheese sauce, and it was just like a frozen pretzel you would make at home. Not bad but didn't impress me. We both ordered a half Reuben and potato salad, as the waitress recommended the potato salad, saying they make it homemade. Holy moly, that was some good potato salad! Very different from the usual, tasted like it was made with Dijon mustard. The Reuben was good, but the potato salad won the whole meal for both of us. Our waitress was very nice and tentative. She mentioned that their larger area wasn't opened up because of COVID. There were only 5-6 tables available in the dining area, very spaced out. Everything looked clean and well kept. Anyway, I'll go back just for the potato salad, maybe try a different sandwich or entree, and hope the music is a bit louder...

The Port City Cafe and Pub is one of Portsmouth's better bars. It's divey but it's not dumpy. There's a decent selection of beer and cocktails, most at good prices. It has hit or miss food. This is more of a bar so just stick with that. A lot of bars in Portsmouth look like they could be closed. In fact many are still open, they just haven't been kept up enough. This bar is one of the better ones. It's a good taste of the local flavor. This has an Irish theme. Beer selections include Guinness but they don't have any Killian's. There's also traditional food like bangers and mash. It also has some healthier choices. The hummus wrap is the best of these. It's about $7 and comes with chips. They also have shows by local musicians. I think Port City is one of the better bars. It's not as dumpy as some others. The beer and cocktails are great, and the food isn't always but they have some healthy choices in a city that needs more of them.

Nice healthy Hummus wrap at an Irish pub

Nice local bar that features several live bands. Good food and drinks. Our server Maddie was the best!

They have some really good seasonal beers and while most the fam did a sampler, hub and I opted for just a pint of what sounded the best. I got the pumpkin ale and he got a darker amber beer. Beers were really good. We decided to get the sliders with just meat and cheese and the buffalo strips. Burgers were solid, chicken was not homemade and the fries were your average fry..the buffalo sauce was the star...very good. They have only a few bathrooms in the joint and they were in need of serious attention. It was a disaster to have to take my elderly mom into a nasty bathroom like that....I am hoping they fix this. Wait staff was very good!

Bar manager looked like he was in another world and didn't really do anything besides greet people when they walked in. The burgers were great though! The fries had a nice crunch to them. Just make sure your ketchup isn't old.... Be sure to check the beer glasses before drinking, I cut my lip on mine. The rim of the glass was broken. The bathroom was also horrific. It smelled like urine and looked like it has NEVER been cleaned in years. We should have gone to the pizza place down the street.....
