Yes, there is an Irish pub in Portsmouth! 100% recommend! The venue came highly recommended by some good friends....So, I tested their words by going with them for drinks and food. Walking into the pub and heading to the back room where the bar is, it was hard not to reminisce of my time spent in Ireland. The restaurant has a vintage Irish pub decor and a friendly atmosphere. The perfect place to go spend time with family and friends. We sat at the bar and our bartender (Sandy) was absolutely fantastic! She was accommodating, humorous, and just made you feel like you were apart of her family. She made a really great Moscow Mule and a tasty version of a Long Island iced tea I've never had before. I hope to go again soon to try some more food varieties, but on this stop, I had the shepherds pie and was able to try some of the hummus and pita bread. I had wanted to eat here for quite some time but had never been able to time it right when they were open. I managed to catch them open this evening and I was not disappointed. They have a pretty good sized menu with enough choices to suit most anyone. I had the fish and chips, the fish was fried crisp and was tender, mild and flaky. Our server was excellent, he checked back often to see if we needed anything or to make sure our food was good. There was live music that was starting as we got seated, the performer was very good. The restaurant seemed clean and it was big enough to be comfortable and not too big so it was sort of a cozy dining experience. I will definitely stop in again if I'm at the right place and the right time!! read more

When you step in this restaurant it's like a low lit speak easy Irish Pub. Nice selection of UK brews and bigger selection of Irish Whiskey. My friend and I visited for the first time today, we thought we'd try a place we have never been to. My honest first impression upon entering was, wow this is drab, this isn't going to be good. But our waitress was welcoming and friendly. I also felt that the music needed to be at a higher volume because it was really quiet. I ordered the pretzel with cheese sauce, and it was just like a frozen pretzel you would make at home. Not bad but didn't impress me. We both ordered a half Reuben and potato salad, as the waitress recommended the potato salad, saying they make it homemade. Holy moly, that was some good potato salad! Very different from the usual, tasted like it was made with Dijon mustard. The Reuben was good, but the potato salad won the whole meal for both of us. Our waitress was very nice and tentative. She mentioned that their larger area wasn't opened up because of COVID. There were only 5-6 tables available in the dining area, very spaced out. Everything looked clean and well kept. The Port City Cafe and Pub is one of Portsmouth's better bars. It's divey but it's not dumpy. There's a decent selection of beer and cocktails, most at good prices. It has hit or miss food. This is more of a bar so just stick with that. A lot of bars in Portsmouth look like they could be closed. In fact many are still open, they just haven't been kept up enough. This bar is one of the better ones. It's a good taste of the local flavor. This has an Irish theme. Beer selections include Guinness but they don't have any Killian's. There's also traditional food like bangers and mash. It also has some healthier choices. The hummus wrap is the best of these. It's about $7 and comes with chips. They also have shows by local musicians. I think Port City is one of the better bars. It's not as dumpy as some others. First of all, I really love the building and atmosphere of Port City. That is usually enough to make me like a place. But what they have great in aesthetics, has been overpowered by how much their food underwhelms me. Maybe if I needed some food to scarf down with a bunch of beers, then their typical bar food might be a good choice. I've been going for about a year. The food has always been great, affordable, and plentiful for the money. I'd definitely say go if you're in the area. My personal favourite has always been their chili served over spaghetti. However, since I have been going, it has changed owners. Th atmosphere was fantastic, but the new owner insists on hanging kitschy and downright tacky ornaments on the wall. It honestly ruins the mood to me. It already looked decidedly Irish, the polka dotted shamrocks on the wall were a hideous addition in my opinion. So bottom line, if you want good food at a reasonable price, and couldn't really care less about atmosphere; this place is definitely for you. tucked away in the heart of Portsmouth, port city as something for everyone. they have bands, reading, club meetings and décor that would rival any pub in Ireland. my brother plays there quite a bit, and on occasion, we make it down to watch. the reuben is what to order... Port city ended up being a weekly stop for me. Portsmouth doesn't have many gluten-free restaurants but this place offered gluten free bread that I could substitute for burgers, sandwiches, whatever. They don't offer a gluten-free menu but the staff and cooks were happy to help you pick apart the menu for hidden ingredients. Sometimes they even brought out samples of food for me to dissect to see if I thought it was safe for me to eat haha. The bartenders would do the same thing with mixed drinks, they were very patient if you had any questions about the drinks on the menu. No gluten free beer, but they offer angry orchard. read more

The 'stew' however was clearly straight from a can and the Guinness i was presented with tasted like it had been watered down. Very disappointed. I can't imagine why this pub doesn't deserve 4 stars. It's not like there are a plethora of options in this town. Yet again the food is great! But again the back office really needs to rethink how they do business. We came in late for a evening meal with coworkers, and while the group was larger than 6 we were auto-charged a 20% gratuity on the bill, after running our cards the receipt was not itemized and their was another blank to leave a tip. I go to Portsmouth for work a fair bit and stopped in here last time I was down. Better than expected for lunch in Portsmouth. Had some decent microbrews if not a ton of them. Had the Blackbridge sandwich. It was good other than I thought it was weird that only one of the pieces of bread was toasted. made for an odd textural note. The appetizers are acceptable, if one is primarily looking to snack on something while out having drinks. The Warm pretzels were tough and flavorless; they were microwaved, frozen pretzels, served with canned cheese product. I recommend the loaded nachos. The entrées leave a lot to be desired. The fish and chips had a strange, nearly burnt flavor but that must be a flavor that the hot air fryer imparts the food since the food did not appear to be burnt. This restaurant does not have a deep fat fryer. The sandwiches were typical, nothing special, although they have creative names. The beer selection is half of what it used to be. There are more typical, domestic beers on tap then there were when the restaurant was first opened around 10 years ago. There used to be a large selection of imported beer and ale, but that selection is much smaller. Service was average, but not bad. read more

I think this is a great little bar in Portsmouth. You can't beat the atmosphere. Drinks are ok for Portsmouth, a little on the light side. I usually order beer or wine here to get my money's worth. For the most part, I like the food here. Their pretzels and cheese are fantastic. The pretzels always come out hot, and the cheese sauce is different. It's got a thinner consistency, but I think it works. The appetizer menu works well here. The one thing I had here that I didn't like was the steak salad. The steak is frozen, and had to be defrosted for my salad. Eh, didn't enjoy that. They also used bagged iceberg lettuce for the salad. That's the only menu item I didn't enjoy, and it's hard to find decent steak in restaurant so I just don't order that when I go in. Overall, this is one of the better places in Portsmouth, and worth a visit to. If only for beer and appetizers. read more

One of the nicest places in Portsmouth to grab a drink. They host local musicians on the weekends which is fun but sometimes too loud for conversation with friends. Visited last Saturday on a whim and loved it! Only place I've been to in the area that pours a Guinness just right. I was impressed that they also had Murphy's and Smithwicks on tap! The stout was only 4.50 a pint and they have happy hours Monday through Friday from something like 4-7. I got nachos for an appetizer and bangers and mash for an entree. Wife got potato soup.
