I put my 4 year old (since he was 3) in Spanish class once/week for 1 hour w/Cecilia and he's in the class w/2 older girls. He was in other programs, and although they were decent, they were geographically undesirable (Long Beach & Irvine) and didn't have the low ratio of students to teacher that PL has. I am so glad I found Jila for French lessons! Jila is a passionate, enthusiastic and engaging native speaker. I found her on Yelp because I was looking to learn a little French before going to Paris... And it definitely did not disappoint. She got back to me shortly after my inquiry via email, and scheduled a lesson right away. First lesson was free, and it's for her to diagnose your learning style, to see what type of teaching suits you the best. I really appreciate that she takes the time to do so. I have wanted to learn French for the longest time, and I tried many different programs/apps (including Rosetta Stone, Babbel, and Duolingo) but with no luck. I felt frustrated, overwhelmed, and stuck. I finally realized that if I was serious about actually communicating with others in French, I needed a class. Jila and Portal Languages have been my answer! Jila (she owns the school and teaches French) is a lovely teacher. She is incredibly patient and creates an environment that really supports the learning process. What I love is that she emphasizes conversation, so during lessons you don't spend the whole time conjugating verbs or memorizing vocab, but actually communicating in French. She does assign little exercises you can do at home to help reinforce what you learn in class, but for the most part you really are learning to speak (and listen!) in French. Also, the class rates are extremely reasonable and the group classes are small, so you get a lot of individualized instruction. After almost three months of weekly classes, I feel like I have made a lot of progress learning and communicating in French, and I give Jila and Portal Languages all of the credit. read more

You get a grand view of the city below so the office sets a good tone for the possibilities of what the world has to offer. Jila, the owner is phenomenal. She is caring and always has a smile on her face. I've been searching high and low for the a good language learning program and I can't say enough good things about Portal Languages in Fullerton. Carlos, my Spanish instructor has been teaching me for several months now and I progress little by little with each class. He is detailed with his lessons and always challenges me with reading, writing and speaking. I feel that I am able to hold a decent conversation with basic words. Thank you Carlos! Situated in the heart of adorably vibrant Downtown Fullerton, the school offers a beautiful view of the city from its top level suite. The atmosphere is very inviting and peaceful, making it a great setting to learn. I've loved learning new languages since I was able to read, but I know the only way to gain fluency is through communicating with native speakers. The school's approach is to only provide native instructors and to fully immerse its students in the language. If the language is completely new to you, you may feel a little lost at first, but if you can just practice shutting off your own language, you will catch on in much the same way a child would because you start to associate words with actions and things, as opposed to translations. This really is what sets this school apart. I have to mention that I consider Jila (the french teacher and school director) a close friend now and she works very hard to ensure that learning doesn't stop after class. She curates social gatherings for the students of all languages to meet one another and really makes this school a delightful place to learn, practice, and meet some wonderful new friends. read more

I took 2 months worth of weekly conversation classes at Portal Languages & could not have been more happy. Jila is an amazing teacher. She is both dedicated & incredibly knowledgeable. I needed to study 2 years worth of French classes in an 8 week period & came to the class weekly as practice for my grammar & primarily, conversation. I took lessons at Portal Language three times a week for eight weeks before moving to a one-year English teaching assignment in Chile. I had some beginning skills before meeting my teacher, Carlos, but couldn't communicate in a full sentence. At the end of two months, though still struggling during a conversation and still needing more vocabulary, I was able to say sentences with correct pronunciation, grammar and word endings. I've been in Chile one week now and can participate in a simple conversation quite well. I wish now I had studied with Carlos for a longer time!
