I'm not totally surprised that I haven't written a review for the art fair; the last (and only…read moreother) time I came was circa 2012, probably, and I was on a bit of a Yelp hiatus at the time. My friend and I loaded up our kiddos and headed out to the fair, because every year since the first one I attended I mean to come back yet I don't. The fair takes place near 57th & Kimbark in Hyde Park, and has been there for decades. It's one of the oldest juried fairs in the country, I think, and best of all: It's free. Not even a suggested donation for this fair. That's unusual and especially so for the calibre of artwork you'll find here! This year at the fair I bought a painting of some midcentury looking birds that just makes me smile. There was some photography of the city that was truly breathtaking. Some paintings that caught my eye--but in the middle of searching for a house, I both don't need more to move and don't know what the wall situation will be like. You'll find all mediums here, folk art (the Lakeshore Quilting Guild had a booth), handmade toys, and so on. You'll find some of these artists at other art fairs around the city as well. I don't know if there's a lot of food here, but that's not what I'm coming for and that's not what it's about. There are some restaurants along 57th that you can stop by, or they set up a food court in the elementary school area. Parking is by luck, really. I don't know how but I got a spot feet from where the street closure started, but the surrounding streets have parking (and I think the university surface lots are free at some point on the weekend, so that may be an option too). It's truly worth a visit, even if you're not there to buy but just want to appreciate art and human creativity.

My only caveat is parking but that applies to most Art Fair in the city. It's not just paintings lots of purses, sculptures,clothes , etc, to purchase. In addition it's right there by the University of Chicago. A more gorgeous campus you'll be hard pressed to find in the Midwest. Definitely check the campus out. I don't understand why others would rate this Art Fair less than 5 stars? Did I mention No Cover ?

I was among those who were excited to be introduced to vegan food, especially with a soulful twist. I sampled wings, tacos, and bbq. Unfortunately, I wasn't wowed by anything I tried. I honestly thought that it all tasted similar and had too much sauce. HOWEVER, I will not be deterred and look forward to exposing myself to other vegan options. I also am happy to see these options in our community, bringing people of all ages and races together around their love of good food.

It's a very…read morevery small museum but it does tell some of the history of the area, and that was interesting to learn a bit more about that older history, particularly the native peoples in the area. I visited because the Journeys exhibit sounded interesting, and it was small but well done. I think the other half of the exhibit, that goes more into depth about the Potawatomi, the area pre-colonization, and the overharvesting of beavers and other animals in the area, is a permanent exhibit. That was actually more interesting overall than the Journeys exhibit for me but that's mostly because I knew less of that history and information. It was cool to see an example of a Three Sisters garden, which was method of agriculture used by native folks. There's a game I love called Three Sisters and it is based upon these concepts. Squash, corn, and beans are the "three sisters"; they're known as this because of their symbiotic relationship. The corn stalks give the beans a structure upon which to climb and grow, and the nutrients in the beans nourish the soil. The squash--specifically, the leaves--provide ground cover and keep pests at bay. It's so fascinating to learn about some of these techniques that aren't practiced as much in modern day society. Not inside the museum but outside is a longhouse, a cabin, and possibly in the growing season an example of a three sisters garden. There's also walking trails and what looked like a picnic area. There's a reasonably large parking lot as well.

We went to Isle a la Cache on the day after Thanksgiving and we were disappointed to learn that the…read moremuseum and buildings were closed! With kids off from school, it seemed odd that it was shuttered for the day. That said, we walked the trails and read the educational signage. Very clean and trails are either paved, planked, or groomed. It's a nice little nature park, and we will probably try a visit again when the buildings are open. Hopefully the star rating will improve once we are able to access the exhibits!

And there's another garden, which I think Mr. Hill is also involved with, across the street just below the Metra viaduct. This is an interesting part of Woodlawn visually because of its proximity to the viaduct--very green, the street narrows, the trains fly by above . . .

**Review of the 5K event only**…read more This is a nice little neighboorhood 5K. The course starts at 159th and Cicero, runs north up Cicero, trough Oak Forest on the west side of Cicero, and then back south down Cicero. It's all on the streets so there's plenty of room. Like pretty much every race ever, the final stretch is uphill, in this case the viaduct under the Metra tracks. The course support was good - water stations, well staffed race day packet pick-up. Overall it was a very well executed race. The price is on par with other 5Ks in the area ($30). You get a long-sleeve t-shirt in the goody bag and a bunch of random promotion swag from local business - pens, cups, magnets, a letter opener?. Apparently, this year you can drop another $5 for a long-sleeve dry-tech shirt which I appreciate. Dry-tech shirts get much more wear from me. I'm planning to run again this year, and maybe even stick around for the parade or some of the restaurant/ bar open houses.
