Things haven't changed since my last visit. Everything is still excellent, ie food, service etc. One of favourite places to dine.

Grabbed a reservation on OpenTable for late dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Location was nice in the city. They have a coat check.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were seated upstairs. Our server was really good and the food was really good. We tried the non-alcoholic guava mule. The guava was nice and sweet and complimented the spicy of the ginger beer. We ordered a French onion soup, steak Diane, and a beef Wellington. The entrees came with choice of salad. We tried one of each , house Gibby salad and the blue cheese wedge. This was a lot of food for us. The French onion soup was my favorite, good flavor, lots of onions and that nice browned cheese top. Both salads were good, the house salad was a little lighter since the blue cheese wedge salad had a rich blue cheese dressing and bacon bits on top. The steak and beef Wellington was also good. In general, we ordered medium rare, it was a little bit rarer than I expected but not I'd edible. So something to think about if you need your meat to be cooked more. The prices seemed fair for a steakhouse and for the amount of food we ate. read more

After three solid days of seafood in PEI, we wrapped up our vacation in Montreal with a reservation at Gibbys for steak and cocktails. For my appetizer, I ordered the French onion soup. I've said before that certain restaurants have the "best" one, but this version may actually take the crown. It wasn't oily, and it was perfectly topped with a generous, melty layer of cheese--the way French onion soup should be. I followed that with the Gibbys salad and a 12-ounce filet. I love a good filet, and this one hit the mark. My husband went for the lamb with the wedge salad and enjoyed both thoroughly. By the end, we were far too stuffed for dessert, so we called it a night. Perfect steakhouse for a Vieux Montreal visit. Walking distance from Hotel Nelligan and the Notre Dame Cathedral. Ambiance and service were fabulous. Picture dark cozy elegant steakhouse. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. Gibbys has been our go-to steakhouse in Montreal for 20 years...which makes me feel old. LOL All kidding aside, the food, ambiance, and service are top-notch. Prices have gone up significantly, so it's now an annual special-occasion treat, but still our favorite over Moishe's and La Queue de Cheval. Bonus: sides are included here, unlike the competition. Located in Place d'Youville in an old stable, the stone walls and dark wood give it a formal look with a relaxed vibe. You can actually have a conversation without shouting. We've tried many dishes, and everything has always been excellent. This place holds so many memories for us--we'll definitely keep coming back. Pro tips: 1. If I had to choose only one place to return to when I visit Montreal again, it would be Gibbys. The service, atmosphere and food were a winning combo. We ordered more food and drinks, but was too busy stuffing my face with good food to take all the photos. Yes that's how good this place is. Perfect place for celebrating life milestones! In Montreal on business and had an unusual compulsion for a good steak and found this place near my hotel and figured why not?! Wow! Then I ended up not even ordered steak cooked in a traditional way. There was just too much goodness on the menu and I wasn't as hungry as I would want to be for a full meal of steak and big sides, so I tried the appetizers, which turned out fine, but still too much food. The burrata was delicious! Pears, I believe, with all the expected friends. That was probably enough for me, but I didn't know it when I ordered, so then the steak tartare came and it was huge for one person. Wish I hadn't eaten one of the large pickles that came as table service! Alas, I went away overstuffed, but the service was excellent, the ambiance was very nice, the noise level was completely tolerable, and the value was good. Great evening at Gibby's! Really liked the ambiance and the service was above and beyond. We started with the bread and pickles. The bread wasn't as warm as I hoped, but tasty. I didn't try the pickles because I don't like pickles in general. We got oysters as our appetizers - while they were good, they were a little one-note and not the best we had had in the city. We ordered one giant 22 oz rib steak to share between the two of us- what was really nice is that they brought us both our own salads (Gibbys salad, which had a great dressing), and our own side potatoes. I got the fries, which were standard, and Chris got the baked potato. The lemon sorbet palate cleaner was refreshing and a lovely addition to the dinner. The steak was a perfectly cooked medium rare steak with fantastic quality and flavor. We also ordered a lobster tail which was perfect too. Dessert was their chocolate mousse cake (I forget the official name of it). It was heavenly and decadent. Perfect for 2 people. My partner also ordered a half oz pour of the Louis XIII, which was certainly an experience!! Again, fantastic service. The night ended with some chocolate mint wafers, and our server took a Polaroid of us as a souvenir :) We had a great time at Gibby's. I took my husband here for his birthday and was very excited for him to be surprised by cake, but unfortunately they missed this detail in our booking reservation :(. We ordered the sets for steak and the beef Wellington. It was my first time ever having a beef Wellington and the pastry paired with my medium rare steak was *chefs kiss*. The buttery, flaky, savory from the pastry paired so well with the juiciness of the steak! My husbands steak was just ok, good sear but nothing to write home about. Our meals were filling and I liked that the set meal comes with a refreshing salad to start, followed by a lemon sherbet interestingly enough. Loved the generous serving sizes and our waiter frequently checked in on us. The restaurant isn't too fancy, but was quite busy. You will definitely need reservations. A must visit steakhouse if you're visiting Montreal. Menu is pricey, so don't get caught off guard, but the service and quality are top notch. By far the best escargot we've ever had, melt in your mouth. Vibe can be kind of loud depending on the crowd (which is typically very busy) but the atmosphere is cool in a very old building. All the food I had in Montreal is really good but this place had very good beef Wellington, the gravy was very flavorful, the service is quick. I chose the blue cheese wedge salad because everyone online recommended it, but in my opinion, the regular salad is better (preferred the dressing on that). Ambiance is very nice but people there were also in regular clothes. The potato on the side was so good too. I left with a lot of leftovers. It's been about 20 years since we've been to Gibby's, it was one of our favorite restaurants. The ambience hasn't changed, very cozy with exposed stone walls and timbers, very 18th century feel. I got the Gibby's salad, which was a flavorful vinaigrette with anchovies, my wife got the shrimp cocktail and onion soup to start. The shrimp was fresh and the onion soup was savory and had a crusty cheese topping. For entrees, we both got the 8 oz fillet mignon with fries, mushrooms and a baked potato. The steak were cooked perfectly with a nice sear, however, the taste was a little bland, salt helped a bit, but it's not the flavor I remembered or as good as Capital Grill or Ruth's Chris. The sides were very good, with the fries being near perfection. Just wish the steaks were a bit better seasoned. The bill came to $340 Canadian. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. She explained the menu carefully and was sure to make recommendations on food and wine. I ended up with the 22 oz Rib Steak with a side of mushrooms and a Blue Cheese Wedge salad. The steak was cooked a perfect medium rare and served with asparagus and double baked potato. In my limited experience, I thought that Canadian beef would be less fatty and less flavorful compared to American beef. But not the case here. The rib steak was well marbled and delicious. Our waitress was the consummate professional who was attentive and interactive. She also had no issues splitting the bill at the end of the night. It was fine but didn't wow us. The complimentary bread, butter, pickles, and bacon bits was fun. The Oysters Rockefeller was not that great. It was fresh but they included too much of a Mornay cream sauce that made it sloppy. The French Onion Soup was excellent with an amazing type of cheese, although there was an over-abundance of the cheese. I was chewing for a while. The Gibbys Salad was fine with a touch of spinach and a vinaigrette dressing. The Blue Cheese Wedge Salad was pretty good, with a homemade dressing. The Lemon Sherbet palate cleanser was a nice touch. The Beef Wellington was alright. It's an 8oz cut but really in regards to proportions of everything it should have been a 6oz cut. The pastry was average. The Duxelles mushroom mixture was rather flavorless and did nothing to enhance the dish. The Bordelaise sauce had an insane amount of red wine in it that was not cooked off. It was almost unusable. The red wine needs to be reduced more in the pan during cooking. A regular Demi Glace sauce would have complimented the dish better. The steamed asparagus was fine. An oldie but goodie review of Gibby's, an old world steakhouse in Old Montreal. I ate dinner here with several work colleagues, and it was one of the coziest atmospheres I've ever dined in. The restaurant is housed in a 200-year-old building with stone walls and fireplaces. It felt like I went back in time to eat in an 1800s cabin. We were served complimentary dill pickles, bacon bits, butter, and a bread roll. The wine selection was excellent and reasonably priced. One of my work colleagues ordered a petite Filet Mignon, and I ordered the Steak Au Poivre. The star, in my opinion, was the Wedge Salad. It was crispy and fresh with an amazingly delicious dressing, croutons, and tomatoes. 10/10 I would always order this salad at Gibby's. The sauce of my Steak Au Poivre was rich and peppery. Although delicious and tender, I'd probably order something else next time. I prefer a more flavorful steak with intramuscular fat and marbling that doesn't need any sauce on it. Dining here was a great experience -the service, food, everything was top-notch. We have been going to Gibby's for years for special celebrations. Last night we went to celebrate my birthday along with our friends. I must say that I was very disappointed as all of us were. To start with, our server was terrible. She never smiled, she never asked us if we needed anything and the food took a very long time to arrive. The atmosphere is always nice at Gibby's, but the prices have gone up considerably. An extra side salad for example, is $19. This is a side salad, not a main meal. Because of our dour server (which has never ever happened before at Gibby's) our evening was spoiled. We all felt bad after we left. Sorry to say that I won't be returning anytime soon. read more

I was recommended Gibbys from my hairdresser and I was excited when we came to our reservation and there were a bunch of ppl waiting. I was super pleased with the space and noise level, and the wine was good. We started with the onion soup and the shrimp cocktail. I don't know if I loved the soup, it was just a tad bit too salty. Mains though, I went with the steak frites and was pretty disappointed. My steak was cooked to medium rare, to my liking, but was still quite tough. And on top of that, not well seasoned and pretty bland. The fries were completely unsalted and flavorless, thank god for table salt. So yeah i don't know, I wish there had been a pepper sauce served with the steak to add more flavor and make the bites less tough. read more

If only I had told myself, "I've never had that many pickles in my life" and here it comes....3, large pickles- as one of Gibby's complimentary table openers. Step back in time to this not-very-well-kept secret, but one where folks try to find a decent reservation. It happened to us the last several times we've visited Montréal a few years ago before the pandemic. This isn't the place where you'll get white walls and minimalist decor. This restaurant is defiantly and unapologetically old-fashioned- in a posh sort of way and magical. I honestly don't think the menu is updated often- but it is thoroughly fulsome and honest, with very nice ingredients. Set in what used to be horse stables, the stone exterior just adds more drama for me. Car is valet and you'll be directed to the 'door on the left' before Gibby's' stable archway. Once inside, you'll notice the stone walls and wood beams that to me-, just said, 'stay longer'. Our server Tamara had such a pleasant aura to her- she actually made our evening comfortable. Drinks were nice- but the dry Rosé she suggested was better. And yes, you get a loaf (maybe brioche?) of bread, 1/4 stick of butter, grotesque pickles and bacon bits. I, thoroughly enjoyed the first one. Hubs, all 3. They actually ran out of oysters so we settled on a Shrimp Cocktail and Lemon Sorbet followed as a palate cleanser. After that, my 52CA$ Halibut was juicy and mouthwatering and topped with a 23$ lobster tail. My rice pilaf+steamed veggies were rocking too. Hubs enjoyed his Medium NY Strip- except, with our own appetizers and Gibby's' openers, he couldn't finish his steak entirely. Expect exceptional service. This classic Steakhouse is famously beloved in Montréal and we can see why. The menu skews towards Seafood, obviously Steak, French, and filling- with a price point to match. A true 5 star steak house experience in Montreal! An absolute must! The experience starts off in a beautiful heritage building in Old Port of Montreal. You will find helpful staff and white tablecloth tables. We came here with a large party so we ordered almost everything on the menu to try. The cowboy steak is a true show stopper. I reviewed the menu and decided on the ribeye steak with the twice-baked potato, asparagus and wedge salad with bleu cheese dressing and bacon bits. Nancie was our server. She was great on explaining the menu to us as well as the wine recommendations. There were even some surprises. After we ordered fresh baked bread with butter as delivered along with a small bowl of whole dill pickles. I'm a pickle snob but loved these super zesty pickles. Some very lime sherbet was also delivered as a palate cleanser. The food was great and met my expectations while Nancie delivered excellent service. Crab cakes 7/10, Salad 7/10, Shrimp cocktail 7/10 (the shrimps were huge), Steak 8/10. The servers were very attentive and nice.
