First, there is massive construction in front of the hotel that should have been finished last year but the new completion date is TBD. Thankfully, our room faced the back of the hotel, looking out into an interior apartment complex, so we didn't have to deal with the early-hour jackhammering. But if I had shelled out some serious money for the Intercontinental brand and a pretty view of Praça da Liberdade, Porto's main square, and was just looking out at a construction lot covered in tarp, I'd be pretty disappointed. Service here was iffy. When we got to the hotel, the bellboy took our bags and, since the concierge was busy, pointed us to some empty seats nearby; I assumed we'd then be next. Then a line starts forming for people waiting to check in as we're sitting there before we finally realize we need to be standing in the line. We never got much of a "Good morning" or "Have a nice day" from the bellboys, only a very diffident nod. We had a hotel credit and used it at the bar; food was exceptionally mediocre and, par for the course, extremely expensive. Two redeeming points for the hotel: 1. The breakfast buffet was pretty good, with several options and fresh fruit. Still doesn't hold a candle to the legendary hotel buffets in Asia. 2. The location was stellar, easy walking distance to most tourist attractions and the bridges in Porto. That's probably what drives the price up. Wouldn't stay here again.

AC doesn't work well, so you are warned for the summer months. Room was spacious, super clean and very comfortable. Not as many ammenities as other hotels, but you do get the robe and slippers and toiletries (attached to the wall). Not too shabby. The staff for the most part are GREAT. On our first day some really couldn't answer questions/seemed confused and had issues with both English and Spanish, but we got through it. They try hard, and that is worth something. The lobby is small and can get crowded quickly. And now Bicicleta - the most unfriendly, obnoxious and unhelpful group of people I have met in Portugal or in most places. ABSOLUTELY THE PITS. Starting with Mr. Grumpy bouncer with an idiot attitude that is like a drill Sargeant when it came to checking on people not walking in from the streets on their way to the CROWDED breakfast room. (with bfast included in your price I can understand their concerns, but this guy was a bully). Most of the staff have a godforsaken look on their unfriendly faces, so if you are just wandering in to look around, expect to be inspected from head to toe and treated like you are a threat to society. NOT FRIENDLY. Breakfast: Where the coffee machine is located creates a mess of a line in front of the hot breakfast buffet area. Food is not bad, but navigating it gets very confusing. And when you add on the most of the staff are simply the worst you will encounter in hospitality, it makes for a mess. KUDOS however to how management handled the power outage. With back up generator, aging adults were able to use the elevator and toilets flushed. COLD shower, but they had power. What didn't manage the situation well was of course Bicicleta, who could only offer salad and didn't think about bread and cheese and cold cuts. Hotel management of the situation was SUPERB. Bicicleta? They should just keep peddaling into another country and leave for good. Have I said they are a dissappointing crew for the most part? All in all, I would still stay here, now that I know my way around town, because the location is great and management works hard to please!

In fact, we are a bit disappointed that they don't have more locations, though the staff told us that they will be in Lisbon soon. Great value, centrally located close to main attractions as well as Sao Bento train and subway stations, super helpful staff, comfortable and clean room. They let us keep our luggage at their hotel for a few days when we spent a few days in Douro Valley, and when we asked for hot water from the cafe to make some tea, they lent us a kettle. It's a small hotel, so not a lot of rooms. Book early!

We stayed 3 nights and really enjoyed Porto. We did not try the hotel breakfast as the price was too high (7€) compared to the many other options just outside the door. The service was excellent. Everyone at the front desk was so friendly and helpful. We had to ask for extra pillows and blankets, as only one soft pillow comes on each bed, and the blanket is thin as well. The only issue I had with this hotel was the overly-scented room. When we walked in our room (room 315) we were greeted by a very strong air-freshener smell. It was so strong that I had to open the window and let the room air out. We decided to put the Do not Disturb sign on the door each day in case the housekeeping would spray any more air freshener in the room, it was just too much. After that smell had finally disappeared somewhat, it had more of a plastic/newly remodeled smell which is what I guess they were trying to cover up with the freshener. Either way, it made me have to keep the window open almost the entire time we were in the room. The bathroom is probably the nicest aspect of the room. Good water pressure, and it was very clean. Overall, I would recommend this hotel.

While we were not directly in the city, we were close enough to walk everywhere and yet far enough away to not hear any loud music. We arrived early in the morning and our room was not ready which was to be expected. I loved that they accommodated us by allowing us to use the spa facilities for a quick shower that was much needed after our long flight. After we freshened up, they tagged our bags and left them with the concierge. We walked the city and got the lay of our location. We really wanted a quick nap before dinner, but when we returned to the hotel our room still was not ready and we did not fully check in until 3:45. The room was nice, but I think the photos online looked better than what we got. We did have a separate living space with a couch that we appreciated. The room was clean and they provided refillable bottles of water. While that was a great perk, it was a bit irritating that we had to call them each time we wanted a refill and they would only give you 1 bottle each time. My husband and I both drink a lot of water, so we ended up buying bottles to ensure that we had enough throughout the night. The breakfast was very good, although it was pretty much the same each day. The staff was nice, but not the best with recommendations or suggestions. The art work was very cool and the hotel very modern and pretty. I would definitely stay here again.

Last minute reservations can be tricky when you are also traveling with two small dogs. However, the front desk staff responded to our inquiry immediately and we were warmly welcomed upon arrival. All of the rooms are named after artists and we were assigned the Van Gogh Suite. Like Van Gogh, the room was dry and moody. It was also very spacious with lots of room for our luggage. Housekeeping brought up two beds for our dogs and treats. They also offered bowls but we had brought our own. We were also given a bottle of champagne and offered two drinks at the bar. The bed was very comfortable and I slept quite well. Everyone at the hotel treated our dogs like celebrities. We were even able to bring them downstairs for breakfast and dinner because we had them in a stroller. The breakfast buffet is great. The bread that is served at the hotel is amongst the best I have eaten in my life. The staff was so accommodating and professional. One person asked us where we were going for the day and offered us lunch suggestions. The manager also comped our parking fees for each day because of an unfortunate experience we had at dinner. They also left a card in our car wishing us a safe journey and provided a bottle of water. We had a great time during our trip to Porto and the staff and accommodations at the Torel Avantgarde are a large reason why.

Hubby and I arrived first because we took an earlier train from Lisbon. Initially, the other two rooms were on the same floor and ours was on a separate floor so I asked if it was possible for us to at all be together on the same floor, if not all of the rooms could be next to each other. They ended up upgrading us to a really nice suite! It had a little terrace you could open up and a separate sitting area. Lucky for us! Not so lucky for the other two rooms. Though their rooms were nice too, just not as spacious. Here are some of the pros/cons of our stay: Pros: -Spacious and clean rooms -Nice public sitting area outside of the suite rooms, where we could meet up before heading out -Mini fridge with bottled water and Coca Cola -Each floor has a different theme, which I thought was really cool. You'll see a different scent-themed decor (and smell) for each. For example, one floor was coffee, another was chili, and another was star anise -Very reasonably prices. We booked through Hotels.com and paid maybe about €110 per night, including taxes -Great location! It's right in the center of Porto and most of the tourist attractions and good restaurants are 5-10 minute walk away -Huge bathroom with his and hers sinks and plenty of space underneath for your toiletries -Comfortable beds/pillows. Although it wasn't a true King size, more like two twins pushed together but I think that's just a European thing -Bath robes -Free welcome drink at their hotel bar (which you don't have to use on the same night as you check in if you're too tired) -They let us check in early at around 12:30 even though check-in is not until 2 or 3 Cons: -There is construction going on outside so it's a little bit more difficult (though not impossible) to get an Uber outside. We took an Uber from the Santa Apolonia train station. He couldn't drop us off right in front but it was still just around the corner, so it wasn't terrible even with our huge luggages Honestly, I can't really think of any cons other than that. Highly recommend Pestana Porto. Might be one of the best hotels I've stayed at in Europe!
