    Tapas
    Ricardo J.

We came here twice on our Madrid trip - the most recent being on 03.04.24. We sat in the bar area and just had drinks and tapas. On one night, the owner or manager (an older gentleman) was making the rounds with the people, checking on the customers to make sure all was well. The bar service here, too, was top notch - old school and professional. The upstairs dining area is beautiful. The building is old yet well preserved. It is Old World decor at its finest. Hopefully we can squeeze in a real sit down meal sometime. I recommend getting here as soon as it opens - this place is very popular and fills up fast.

This restaurant has a long history, with old charm deco. We tried the famous roast lamb (68 Euro) cooked in a very old wood fired oven. The meat was very tender, especially the back part. We also had the garlic shrimp, but it was a bit ordinary.

    Rabbit stew and steak

THE BEST meal we had on our entire trip to Spain (beating out Barcelona and Granada)! We didn't know about the lamb ahead of time, so we got the rabbit stew and the steak. Both were absolutely phenomenal as they were rich in flavor with generous portions. Our food took a little longer than usual to get out so our server generously offered us a cheese appetizer while we waited. Additionally, as a historic inn, we loved the history and atmosphere of the building. I especially loved the old wooden chairs with celebrity names on the back. This is the number one place I recommend to anyone visiting Madrid! Do yourself a favor and reserve a table here before any others!

Great historical restaurant. Known for their meats! Had a bulls tail stew which was out of this world. Check out the chairs with all the famous names who have dined there. Flan was delicious-melts in your mouth! Olives yummy

The location is great. The restaurant itself is a beautiful old home. It's 100% all Old Madrid. Service was impecable. We were recommended here by friends and told to order their lamb I have never eaten such a delicious lamb before. It is cooked in a large wood burning oven. It was so delicious. I recommend this place to any one visiting Madrid.

    Delicious flan!

Fantastic meal in Madrid. First saw this restaurant featured in José Andrés new show. He and his daughters were here and had the 1/4 lamb, their signature dish. It did not disappoint. Simply prepared with salt and water and roasted in a nearly 400 year old wood fired oven, it is sublime. And I say that as someone who doesn't usually care for lamb. The dining room upstairs* has an old world vibe and the busy wait staff attend every table and work around each other seamlessly. We also got the sliced potatoes which are cooked alongside the lamb so they got a nice umami and smokiness to them. We had the asparagus with two sauces which turned out to be 4 enormous chilled white asparagus. They were delicious. I thought we were getting grilled asparagus, but that's not what we ordered and the white asparagus was a pleasant surprise. One sauce was a type of aioli and the other was a bright fresh minced pepper, onion and tomato salsa. They also had a bowl of green olives and a bread basket for the table, as well as 4 complimentary croquettes which were light and fluffy and flavorful, all served before the meal. We finished off the meal with a flan that was probably the best either of us had ever had. Then they bring you 4 little cookies with your check. mercy! We had this meal for lunch and well, that was it for the day. We were so happily full that we didn't need dinner, so, in that respect, it was kind of a deal! It was about 148 euro for what we ordered including a 40 euro bottle of wine, so, not an inexpensive meal, but for what we got and the great service, we think we got a great deal. We would come back here again in a heartbeat if we returned to Madrid. We saw some incredible looking stew with chicken, sausage and garbanzo beans that I would like to try. Someday! *they had a small elevator to the upstairs if you are in need of one.

Out of this world! The service was impeccable. The wait staff was so helpful and nice. The ambiance is great. It's exactly what you want at an old world restaurant in Madrid. And the food! Get the roasted lamb and the flan you will not be disappointed!

Awesome wood oven from the 1600s!!!

This place is fantastic. The food is outstanding. The decor is vintage and comfortable. We had lunch here twice during our stay in Madrid. We sat in the outdoor and loved the breeze and people watching. Special note for the leg of lamb for two people. That will have you write home!!

    John S.

Excellent, welcoming environment. The house special is roasted lamb. It's crispy and juicy. I highly recommend coming with an appetite because the portions are generous. The wooden chairs in the dining area have the names of famous persons who ate at the restaurant carved into them. I saw Peruvian-Spanish Noble Laureate and former politician Mario Vargas Llosa and the Mexican rock band Maná as names I recognized.

Great wine and beers. We had a sampling of lamb, smoked hams and other delights. The restaurant is over 100 years old with the oven having dates of 1647. Great little tasting or sit down spot in Madrid.

Located a few blocks…read moreeast of Puerta del Sol, it's nice because there are no hordes of people you have to navigate to find it. This is a place for people who appreciate their food and the experience, not for the tourist masses that are looking to get fed quick and cheap. It is an interesting set up as they have dining rooms on both sides of the street. I was in the one on the east side of the street and taken downstairs into the basement which has the looks of a refurbished ancient cellar. I had a 2 top in the corner to myself with a great view of the room so I could appreciate what everyone else was eating. I had a very civilized time. Frenetic Tapas this is not. There are white linen tablecloths present, a small container of housemade chimichurri, menus on line, great wi-fi service, a full bar and wine list, and menus that are bovine centric. I had an Argentine Negroni (the Argentine nod is due to a splash of Fernet Branca giving it a slight minty taste on the back end) and a glass of affordable, high ranking Tempranillo. These were perfect with the olive and bread starters with EVOO/Spanish vinegar on the table to mix to taste and also served with compounded butter. I was there to eat and the Mollejas (veal sweetbreads) are a must in my opinion. They are listed as a house specialty and come on a charcoal heated sizzle plate served with a side of broad flaked sea salt to finish to taste. Crispy edges and creamy textures throughout with a hit of grilled lemon and they were simply sublime. I also took down an Entraña (skirt steak) that seemed larger than its described 300 grams. Also served on a sizzle plate it was perfectly cooked by some expert grill guys upstairs. To ensure that I ate something with color, I had a salad on the side that I dressed to taste with the EVOO/Spanish vinegar on the table. The service here is friendly, professional, and not overbearing. My meal was about $85 USD which is pricey by typical Madrid eating standards but it was worth it considering the quality, quantity, and variety of what I experienced. I would be happy to go back here again any time I'm in the area!

When I found out I was coming to Madrid I had to book a table. First things first, my suggestion is book way in advance. This place fills up fast. My friend and I waited too long and the only seating we could get was at 11:15 PM. No big deal though there's plenty of places you can get a light snack in the surrounding area while exploring the city. Walking in, the architecture immediately hits you. Low ceilings, gorgeous old brick, tight dining rooms, it really feels like you stepped back in time. The whole atmosphere is elevated without being stiff. Staff was super friendly and made the experience feel smooth from start to finish. There's also apprently a really nice wine cellar at the bottom I overheard other patrons bragging about. Food wise, I will keep it real, it was good, just not my favorite meal in Madrid. The sangria was solid, definitely one of my highlights. The croquettes were fire. Crispy, creamy, exactly what you want. My friend's seafood casserole was actually really good too, I lowkey wish I went that route. Now the misses. The sautéed vegetables with Iberian ham didn't do it for me. The veggies needed seasoning bad, and the ham leaned a little too salty, so together it just felt off. The suckling pig, the signature dish, was good, but I was not blown away. If I find myself returning here, I would explore other options. After dinner, there was a little show and they let you keep a souvenir menu, which was a nice touch and made the night feel more memorable. Overall I had a solid 3.5 star experience rounded up to 4. Sobrino de Botín is history, it is iconic, and it is worth saying you have been. Just do not expect it to be the best meal of your trip. Hit Botín, soak it in, then go explore the rest of Madrid's food scene, because that is where things really start to shine.
