A Massive Disappointment: Style Over Substance As a professional Chef, I entered Posada de la Villa with high expectations for a masterclass in Spanish cuisine. Unfortunately, the evening was a masterclass in how to alienate a customer. Despite being the very first party seated at 7:45 PM, we were treated as if we were invisible. The service was nonexistent; we watched in disbelief as tables seated long after us finished three courses, paid, and left while we sat staring at an empty table. When the food finally arrived at 8:45 PM, it was an insult to the craft. I ordered the rabbit and rice, only to be served a plate of shards and bones. The rice was undercooked and aggressively seasoned with nothing but salt. The steak was gray and overcooked, and the "branzino" was a meager half-portion served at a premium price. I felt cheated. To top it off, the "historic" charm is a total facade. While the decor is beautiful, the "ancient establishment" vibe is fake--it's just a 20-year-old business in a restored shell. Between the deplorable food quality and the dismissive service, this was a culinary catastrophe. Save your money; this place is all smoke and mirrors. The roasted lamb is all it's cracked up to be, and totally worth it. If you have a larger group, get one order (that "serves two"). There's plenty to go around! We came here twice on our Madrid trip - the most recent being on 03.04.24. We sat in the bar area and just had drinks and tapas. On one night, the owner or manager (an older gentleman) was making the rounds with the people, checking on the customers to make sure all was well. The bar service here, too, was top notch - old school and professional. The upstairs dining area is beautiful. The building is old yet well preserved. It is Old World decor at its finest. Hopefully we can squeeze in a real sit down meal sometime. I recommend getting here as soon as it opens - this place is very popular and fills up fast. read more

THE BEST meal we had on our entire trip to Spain (beating out Barcelona and Granada)! We didn't know about the lamb ahead of time, so we got the rabbit stew and the steak. Both were absolutely phenomenal as they were rich in flavor with generous portions. Our food took a little longer than usual to get out so our server generously offered us a cheese appetizer while we waited. Additionally, as a historic inn, we loved the history and atmosphere of the building. I especially loved the old wooden chairs with celebrity names on the back. Posada de la Villa is truly a world-class restaurant. The food is exceptional; service is perfect and the ambience is classic Spain through and through. Their specialty is roast lamb which is usually reserved for two people but they will make an exception and provide a hearty half order for one. (Still way too much food.) The potato side dish is moist and fit perfectly with the rich leg of lamb. Topping it off was a perfect chocolate truffle and crispy, crunchy cake bread just before getting the check. Fantastic meal in Madrid. First saw this restaurant featured in José Andrés new show. He and his daughters were here and had the 1/4 lamb, their signature dish. It did not disappoint. Simply prepared with salt and water and roasted in a nearly 400 year old wood fired oven, it is sublime. And I say that as someone who doesn't usually care for lamb. The dining room upstairs* has an old world vibe and the busy wait staff attend every table and work around each other seamlessly. We also got the sliced potatoes which are cooked alongside the lamb so they got a nice umami and smokiness to them. We had the asparagus with two sauces which turned out to be 4 enormous chilled white asparagus. They were delicious. I thought we were getting grilled asparagus, but that's not what we ordered and the white asparagus was a pleasant surprise. One sauce was a type of aioli and the other was a bright fresh minced pepper, onion and tomato salsa. They also had a bowl of green olives and a bread basket for the table, as well as 4 complimentary croquettes which were light and fluffy and flavorful, all served before the meal. We finished off the meal with a flan that was probably the best either of us had ever had. Then they bring you 4 little cookies with your check. mercy! We had this meal for lunch and well, that was it for the day. We were so happily full that we didn't need dinner, so, in that respect, it was kind of a deal! It was about 148 euro for what we ordered including a 40 euro bottle of wine, so, not an inexpensive meal, but for what we got and the great service, we think we got a great deal. We would come back here again in a heartbeat if we returned to Madrid. We saw some incredible looking stew with chicken, sausage and garbanzo beans that I would like to try. This is very classic establishment with Castilian decor. Food was OK . Our lamb dishes were below expectations and did not match Asador de Aranda. Service was formal and the clientele more upscale. En la entrada nos recibió el Sr. Javier, una persona encantadora quien en todo momento, nos hizo sentir VIP customers y quien ya nos habia atendido temprano cuando al llegar hicimos la reserva para la noche. Al llegar en la noche, abren puntualmente. Por fuera se prenden las luces de aquel establecimiento antiguo del año 1647, cuyo horno en piedra aun prepara el cordero asado o lechazo mas espectacular en Madrid. El segundo piso tiene una vista de salon hacienda, donde cada silla de las mesas conserva el nombre de las mas distinguidas personalidades que han visitado el restaurante en todos los años y a nosotros nos tocó la silla donde el Nobel de Literatura Mario Vargas Llosa se sentó. En nuestra mesa nos atendió Andrés de Quito y Roberto quien nos sirvió y preparó el asado para nuestro deleite. No solo la comida fue maravillosa, la atencion de estas tres personas representaron la elegancia y prestigio que este lugar ha conservado por años. Excellent, welcoming environment. The house special is roasted lamb. It's crispy and juicy. I highly recommend coming with an appetite because the portions are generous. The wooden chairs in the dining area have the names of famous persons who ate at the restaurant carved into them. I saw Peruvian-Spanish Noble Laureate and former politician Mario Vargas Llosa and the Mexican rock band Maná as names I recognized. read more

This is a popular place so we are only able to get an afternoon lunch reservation. We didn't realize the traditional meat stew need advance reservation but this give us an excuse to visit Madrid the next time. Okay, we did not know what to expect and being a ragtag group of partiers after watching the World Cup, we did not understand the process. The waiter seemed put off by our lack of knowledge but we eventually placed our order. Then, the food came and WOW! My wife and I had a very nice dinner here last night. After spending two days in Toledo, we were ready to get back to the action in Madrid and somewhat burned out on the tapas scene, chose Posada de La Villa for a good, quality Spanish dinner. We were immediately greeted by the maitre de and walked upstairs to what is the second of at least 3 levels. In Spain, be prepared to be asked if you have a reservation when walking into any respectable restaurant. While we've never made one and never had a problem, it seems the front of house enjoys toying with you a bit on this matter- if not to make you feel as though you are being done a favor then perhaps as a statement that for this caliber of restaurant, you've gotten lucky:) We were seated in a very nice dining room surrounded by lots of warm brick and wood making for a very comfortable and quaint ambiance. My wife said it reminded her of the higher end Gast Haus's in Germany, but for me it felt more Spanish country, almost with an 18th century feel. The service was excellent, with wine, chosen appetizers of fried onions (the Spaniards do live their fried food, but you can take solace in knowing they're using heart healthy EVOO) and picked cucumbers (of the giant variety) along with the mandatory complimentary aperitif in most Spanish restaurants (and bars for that matter); in this case cheese filled croquets. For our main course, we had the roasted lamb for two which arrives in a steaming hot bowl giving it a very country, even medieval feel. The waiter expertly divvies up the quarter lamb onto each plate, spooning the au jus on to each portion and leaving about a quarter of the meat in the bowl. We complimented the lamb with potatoes, almost scalloped with onions and peppers which were the perfect compliment. One thing to note is that while very, very good, save for chicken, the meat in Spain, be it pork, ox, venison, lamb, etc. has what I would describe as a "gamey" taste to it. Not a bad thing at all, but fot Americans used to mass farmed pork and beef with added chemicals, preservatives, etc. I'm sorry to say that the meat here takes some getting used to. With that said, the lamb was exceptional, and you just know your enjoying something very authentic and special as you look around the dining room to find that you are significantly outnumbered by, a very good thing indeed. We did meet a very nice couple from the US sitting at the table next to us who have just begun their retirement in Spain, and the gentleman too enjoyed the lamb! For desert, we had a small sampler of fried milk cake, milhojas and a cream cheese filled funnel cake all of which went beautifully with a small glass of port from the local area which the waiter kindly refilled half way at no extra charge. If you have the time and are looking for a very nice atmosphere to dine in the heart of Madrid and don't mind spending a little money (with the dollar on the decline, Spain is very, very expensive for everything), I can't recommend this place enough. read more

We found this restaurant in a guide book. It was also my first big meal in Spain. I was not disappointed! The food was delicious and the service was excellent. I also appreciated the rustic decor of the place. Although our Spanish was horrible, the staff was very accomodating and attentive. We had the following: 1. Roasted baby lamb - it comes in a pan and they cut it up in front of you. So very delicious. It seemed like all the other tables around us ordered the lamb too. 2. Merluza (hake stew) - Also tasty. You have to like seafood though since hake is fish. 3. A plate of asparagus - good but nothing out of the ordinary. This is the traditional green asparagus we eat here in the US. We ordered asparagus at 2 other restaurants in Spain and both served the large white kind. 4. Sangria - this was my first taste of real Spanish sangria and it was far sweeter and thicker than the kind I've had in the US. I was a bit surprised at the sweetness. I had sangria at another Spanish restaurant and it was also very sweet. The meal was expensive. I can't remember the exact price but this place isn't for the budget consious. I am giving this place 5 stars because the food was very tasty AND the service was excellent. read more

We came a few minutes late to our 9 pm reservation. The Matre 'd was very nice. We started our meal with olives and croquets compliments of the house. We had house wine, house sangria, and beer to drink. We started with soup. Onion soup and garlic and egg soup. Both were good. The next course was garlic shrimp. Very tasty but the shrimps were tiny. The next course was wood fired lamb served with the leg and hoof. It was amazing- the crispy skins melted in the mouth. This is what this restaurant is famous for. In the center of the first floor is a giant wood stove. We had a side of roasted asparagus and also roasted mushrooms- both are great. We ended with the house dessert plate and an Galatians aperitif made from grapes and served in an iced glass-.overall a wonderful meal, with excellent service and a setting that is fit for a special meal in a special city. I highly recommend- we spent three hours dining and savoring our meal. This should be on every visitors list of traditional Spanish cuisine to try in Madrid. read more

I ate here with my family on Christmas day for lunch and it was really excellent. The menu is, well, very traditional Spanish: cochinillo, cordero, solomillo - typical asador-fare. But I have to say that the quality of the food, its preparation and presentation are all really top-notch. The cordero was simply divine. The service was outstanding. It aint cheap, but well worth it in my opinion. The location is a fun, multi-storied building with a bunch of different rooms. This gives the restaurant a smaller, cozy feel despite being rather large. I have been to this restaurant around 4 times over the last 18 months. Their roast lamb is awesome. I was at a wedding once and when the priest said, " Lamb of God, you...." I thought about this place and the lamb. You have to have the lamb of God. They cook the lamb in an old stone oven. As an entry try the chistorras.
