Stopped by this place during a recent food tour in the city and this place was not packed so I had my reservations but boy was I wrong. The best garlic shrimp tapas I had during my stay in Madrid. The buttery olive oil garlicy sauce was so delicious we scooped every drop with their home baked bread. We also ordered their vermut (tasty) and amazing croquettas and their tomato salad was fantastic. It was heirloom tomatoes with some olive oil drizzled bringing out the best flavors. Service was great and food was devoured.. Pretty unassuming spot serving great tapas. highly recommend to try both these dishes when in Madrid.
Delicious Gamba's ajillo (shrimp in garlic sauce in clay pot). Absolutely delicious. The langustinos we ordered were ok compared the shrimp! The vermut was good and so was the wine. The server we had was super friendly and fun (the older one). Great ambiance being outside having a good ol' time!!
A staple for the locals with garlic shrimps so good they'll make you question every other time you've ever eaten shrimp. Bubbling in oil and drowning in garlic. Protip: One bread basket is for amateurs. Two means you're serious about mopping up every last drop of that liquid gold. Honestly, I came for the tapas and left in a committed relationship with crusty bread and shrimp olive oil juice. Bring gum. Or don't. Let the garlic speak for you.

Gambas al ajillo were the best we had in Spain - a must try here; rest of the food was decent. Grilled squid was good but they serve it with a lot of raw garlic which was a bit overpowering for us. Croquettes had nice flavor but the texture was almost a bit too goopy. The iberian pork tasted good but was a little drier than expected. Overall the food was good but nothing special; the garlic shrimp though were amazing. Shrimp texture was perfect and the garlic butter was so well salted, it was simple, high quality, and delicious. We literally were mopping up the butter with bread. I'd recommend giving this place a shot and definitely getting the shrimp
his was the third stop on our Tapas tour. We were actually going to come here for dinner yesterday but decided to go to another spot so this worked out well. Medium sized with some outdoor seating. Empty as it was early with all customers sitting outside. Name means Grandfather's house and they've been around since 1906. They are known for their sweet wine-El Vino del Abuelo. Also, for their Garlic Shrimp and for their Calamari sandwich. The tasting was for their House sweet wine. It was tasty and not too sweet. They do have bottles for sale from the restaurant only. No online purchase available. We also had their Garlic Shrimp (Gambas Al Ajillo) Very good. Service was fast and friendly. We also got a complimentary post card from their collection which was a nice touch. Another one for a return.

They were so busy that the two of us were crammed at the bar by the register. Directly in front of the bar, there is a narrow moat where servers were throwing trash like used napkins. I thought that was interesting. It made me have to lean over to reach the food at the bar. Of course I ordered garlic shrimp. This was so tasty, especially with the bread that they provided. This is the only remarkable dish that I would come back for. You can see the guy busily cooking them in little dishes at the corner by the window. I spent about $28 USD for two people here. The food we ordered was definitely not a full meal.
You can't miss Abuelo's. You just can't. From The appetizer paella del Domingo, to the shrimp, calamari, croquetas, piquillo peppers, wine and dessert, you can't do better! Seriously, try it. Don't go the all American route. Try the real thing. You won't disappoint. The service was amazing, Julia was attentive and kind. The ambiance is typical, but you have to find a place if you don't have reservations. So do it!
Visited to try their famous garlic shrimp. Ended up ordering the Jamon, chorizo and deep fried shrimp as well. Ordered beer and vermouth to drink. The garlic shrimp was garlicky and soft-tasty but nothing mind blowing. The bread it came with seemed a bit stale. Enjoyed the deep fried shrimp more than I thought I would. Jamon and chorizo were just as how they look. Underwhelming.
On our way to La Casa del Abuelo for lunch at the end of the street, we noticed one of the sister locations on the same street (Calle de la Victoria). The location we went to may have been the smaller of the two, but it was inviting and reminded me of a French brasserie/bistrot. We ordered the Garlic prawns, Tortilla española, and Black paella (just be aware of the black lips afterward) and everything was absolutely delicious and so rich in flavors! Probably my favorite meal in Madrid! Great price and service as well. 100% recommend!!

Shrimp anything is good here like grilled shrimp or the spicy tempura shrimp, bread is very hard so have something that you can use to soak it up. We used the tomato salad. A bit overly salty if you are not use to a pretty heavy handed salting of dishes like in the tomato salad. I tried the sweet wine and it's sweet for a red but nothing like a moscato which I was hoping for. Great overall, just wished we weren't by the road where cars were driving through. read more

The garlic shrimp was amazing. We dipped our bread to soak up the drippings. The sangria was amazing. The staff and service were quick and friendly. We sat outside and watched Madrid pass by. read more

Really good, whole, fresh shrimp. Rip the head of off, suck the brains out, eat the body, spit away the shells in the trough on the floor next to the counter. The shelled shrimp in oil and garlic was absolutely delicious. Use some bread to soak up the garlic and oil. Excellent sangria too read more

We stopped at this place for a quick bite. They have a small menu and we're about to leave but the waiter suggested we try a couple of their specialties. I'm glad we stayed the were amazing! We sat outside and listened to the waiters who were both fricking hilarious. It was a great experience. read more

On our way to La Casa del Abuelo for lunch at the end of the street, we noticed one of the sister locations on the same street (Calle de la Victoria). The location we went to may have been the smaller of the two, but it was inviting and reminded me of a French brasserie/bistrot. We ate here our first night in Madrid, 10/15/25. The food was excellent, I enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered. The tortilla espanola was perhaps the best I've had. The garlic shrimp was delicious! Our friends ordered the artichoke topped with Iberian ham and it was out of this world. We also enjoyed potato bravos and red sangria. Would definitely dine there again! read more

We love love loved Casa del Abuelo. We found it from a Netflix show and so happy we did. The entire menu was fantastic and even the knife we used to cut the tomato salad was so sharp and delightful to cut, such a tiny detail but really made an impression. We ordered in our struggle Spanish and enjoyed every bite. The waiters have such personality and this was truly a highlight of the trip. read more

Amazing tapas at a restaurant that is over 100 years old. The shrimp here are absolutely fantastic. Lots of garlic and butter, and served piping hot with delicious baguette bread. Try the vermouth. It can get very crowded, but there is a larger location directly across the street. The waiters were super friendly, but work quickly. read more

Other than the guy behind the counter being a complete Richard, this place was really good. My wife and I were on vacation in Madrid and we saw this place on Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix, one of the best shows ever. I ordered the garlic butter shrimp, which was the highly recommended dish. I ordered a cana and they actually had their own craft cream ale beer, which was pretty good. The shrimp comes out it its own dish and is bubbling garlic butter surrounding the perfectly sized shrimp. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The guy behind the counter was shouting at me while I perused the menu when I walked in. "What do you want!? Do you want a red wine" I had to turn around and tell him to give me a minute. I want to think I am one of the nicest people on the planet, but it was ridiculous. I should take one star off because of how much of a Richard he was, but the garlic butter shrimp was really good. Plus they let this dude selling flowers come in and bother us and they didn't seem to care. I am trying to enjoy my meal, shoo this guy out! read more
my wife wanted to check this place out due to the garlic shrimp pictures on google maps. interestingly enough, we walked by this place on our first day in Madrid and didn't notice it until our last day of our europe trip. service is quick and we got seated very quick. We ended up getting the tomato salad, and the garlic shrimp with some bread. if you end up getting the garlic shrimp dish, make sure you get some bread to soak up the garlic bread juice. both dishes were great and tasty. Both dishes were heavy on the garlic, but just the way i like my food. lol. we also got sangria and soda. The sangria is small and very light, but then again, it was very cheap for a glass. They have seating inside and outside. The indoor seating is almost broken down into two separate sections. read more
I walked by this place on my last night in Madrid, which also happened to be Thanksgiving. It was packed with people, and the gambas (shrimp) looked so good. The last thing I hadn't eaten on my trip yet was gambas al ajillo, and this place clearly specialized in that. I walked up to the crowded standing-only bar and ordered a gambas and a glass of white wine. I heard her telling the Cook that I wanted a double, but I ignored it. A barrel table ended up opening up outside, and I moved out there. The gambas came out quickly, and they were delicious. The garlic sauce was perfect to sop up with the bread. Overall, great food, but I was disappointed when I got my check and realized that they had given me the larger size which was €17.50. I think that's generally the price of shrimp in Spain, but seemed expensive after what I've been paying. Still, I would recommend this place! read more
I love watching Phil Rosenthals "somebody feed Phil" & he recommended this place. I sat at the exact restaurant he did as the other places were super packed ! I believe there are three. Of course had to start with Gamba's Al ajillo which was the best I've ever had. I added mushroom croquettes (croquettas) and a glass of wine. This meal was a good amount to keep you going as you explore Madrid. Here's a tip: tip your servers well. Coming from the US, it's usually 20% or double the tax. Here, people are tipping with a few coins & being that they are sooo busy, please tip well and make their day as they made yours with amazing food. Madrid is a VERY busy area with absolutely amazing food, if not the best food in the world. They deserve it. read more

One of the better tapas in madrid! We found out about this place by watching Feed the Phil and his recommendation was spot on! You gotta try their garlic shrimp and dip the bread in the butter. Finish it off with sangria (one of the best I ever had) and enjoy the evening people watching. read more

DO NOT COME TO THIS ESTABLISHMENT We ordered the garlic shrimp for $17 euros?!?!!!! And they were disgusting, tiny, pre frozen and there was poop floating around in the thick layer of butter (nothing like that shown in some of the other photos or in the show Somebody Feed Phil) . That's not even the worst part....the shrimp was SPOILED. I thought it smelled weird and did some research online to see what it was and realized it smelled like ammonia aka the shrimp was BAD (at this point we had eaten a good amount of it as we were starving) so we knew we were done for. This place gave my bf and I both food poisoning avoid at all costs and do not trust these 5 star reviews. Maybe they treat foreigners and locals differently but pls avoid if you are a foreigner at least and save your stomachs. read more

We came in during the afternoon. The service was so hospitable to my toddler in a stroller and husband. I'm vegetarian but my husband said the shrimp was the best he's ever had, so flavorful with garlic and oil. The tomato salad was so fresh and satisfying. Wine was slightly chilled and sweet. This place lives up to the hype. read more
I ordered Calamari de bocadillo. The calamari was very chewy and need a lot of jaw power to finished the sandwich. The bread was good. That was best part of the sandwich. I wish that there was hot sauce. This place was recommended by the walking tour guide. read more
