Shapes is an all women's gym with a brand new location in Meridian ID. I signed up with a group of girlfriends last week and have been thanking myself ever since. Shapes has the kindest employees, trainers & management and every single employee who I've interacted with has been super warm, welcoming and engaged with the members who come in. They're so anxious to help and support women and you can tel they genuinely love what they do! I've tried group classes with Cheryl, Marissa and April and all 3 have been phenomenal and upbeat with a contagious, positive approach to leading group classes with ages, bodies and abilities of all types. I've appreciated that all 3 of these teachers have shared modifications for allowing guests to go at either an easier or harder pace, depending on their varying needs. My favorite part of the group classes has been that the workout room has positive affirmations and mantras posted on the walls that are so encouraging and lifting. Who doesn't need to be reminded of their worth as they work hard, making time for themselves! The price is unbeatable for what they offer - gym equipment to run, lift & bike, an infrared sauna, a stocked locker room with showers and essentials, full access to all group classes with a variety of classes and times starting early in the morning and often even having night time classes offered too! Pandi leads warm-ups and cool downs and she's formal and focused - no funny business during her parts. Then Greg comes in for the technical instruction and he's goofy and silly and makes the kids laugh and have fun. I find the 2 styles of teaching to be too dramatically different for the kids; it's a confusing message the kids are receiving on what behavior is allowed. Class size varies... in 8 classes, we saw as few as 3 students to as many as 7. There's also a handful of adults who help keep the kids in line during training... often times there were more teachers than students. Classes end with a dodge ball game, which is fun for the kids but I found disconnected from martial arts. There is a large seating area for parents, but kids face away from you for most of the action. Come payment time, you are invited to a back room and handwritten on a piece of paper is your price. They did this with my husband first, then mentioned a different price to me a week later. They want a 6-month commitment and payment in advance. when I asked to pay monthly, the price increased by $25 per month. They wouldn't let me take the paperwork home so I could discuss with my husband and fill out on my own. They wanted to me to juggle my two "hungry for dinner" kids in a room where they couldn't touch anything while I filled out paperwork. Not a parent friendly approach! I went online that night and found many other martial arts studios with classes for young kids and they shared their prices online, and those prices were 60% less on average. Now that we've signed up with another studio, I can't explain where they justify the price hike. I didn't feel good about the handwritten pricing; I felt played... like they were looking at me, our clothes, my car whatever... and suggesting a price they thought I'd be willing to pay. And they had to take me to a back room so none of the other parents wouldn't know. Speaking of cars... there's one always parked in the handicap spot right in front of the main entrance. And this car does not have handicap plates or a placard. And it's there every class (unlike many of the students and teachers), which leads me to believe the owners choose to break the law every time they come to work, which further tells me the kind of people who are running this business. Avoid if you can.

Before working with a coach, I had done a lot of group classes and worked out independently. However, working 1:1 with someone who is super knowledgeable and encouraging has been a game changer in my consistency and motivation. Rachel is a badass powerlifter and kind human so she makes twice weekly workouts, dare I say, enjoyable! I love the flexibility that Volition gives to work with a trainer but also to workout independently. Rachel's programming for these independent days is clear and makes it easy stick to my goals. This has helped me to get comfortable training on my own. The gym is always clean, people are welcoming, there is plenty of equipment and it makes it easy to get an early workout done effectively and efficiently.
