This park is nice but a few things to keep in consideration. One. It isn't a crazy park for scooters now as a scooter rider it is a little annoying. Two. Some stuff is cool while others are lame. Three. There are a lot of snakes like a lot and if you're trying to ride and go with the nice flow of this park a kid coming on a bike or scooter that isn't being looked after bu parents can ruin your time. What an interestingly shaped skate bowl. I think the skate park is very small for a skate park, not as small as the old UF skate park but this park is not as large as a skate park should be. ESPECIALLY the bowl. This park is always crowded because all the skaters are always trying to do tricks and it results in no room for people who aren't regulars to become regulars. The actual park part is cool, full of children which can be weird. This park is okay. Terrifying to those with social anxiety and very intimidating to new skaters. First things first... Huge kudos to all the older teenagers and adults that look out for the young ones who are obviously new to being on wheels! Seriously so much gratitude! I took my son to ride his bike around the track and play on the playground but he just wouldn't stay out of the skate park area. To my surprise he wasn't the only younger kid riding their bike around all the obstacles and even down in the bowls. There is definitely a skateboard in his future, lol. I love that there are shaded sails and picnic tables right near the skate park too so once he's more skilled on wheels I can be close to keep an eye but still be comfortable. I love the gazebo in the far corner, beautiful place to sit in the shade and read or birdwatch and enjoy the weather. There's what looks like a trailhead near that corner as well that I have yet to explore. The track however is long overdue for some love. There are some areas that are so broken up and overgrown with moss/mildew that it's too slippery to walk or bike on if it's dewy or recently rained. Overall, it's a great park with fun for all ages, it just needs a little sprucing up around the edges. read more

I have been recently visiting different parks in Gainesville during the COVID-19 crisis to get some exercise. To be honest I had never heard of Possum Creek Park before, but it made the news because the city decided to fill out Skate Park with mulch to keep people from skating. It's okay the city rallied together and pushed the mulch out of the skate park within 24 hours and made the park look amazing with the mulch on the sides of the park. I went to for a nice walk around the park and noticed it has a really nice dog park. There were a lot of dogs there when I walked by. I thought the dog park was really nice. The park offers plenty of picnic tables for people to bring picnics to the park. The park has fields for people to play different sports on! I just went for a stroll around the park and walked past everything. The park has a playground for kids, but it was roped off so that no one could play on it. The park is big and they have plenty of parking for groups and for people to celebrate a birthday or just to get some fresh air during the summer days. I really enjoyed walking around the park and I will for sure be back! read more

After reading Adam G's review from 2012, I just wanted to update my own review and place emphasis on the fact that Possum Creek is, was, and has been a very safe place for everyone. Adam claims he saw--at least back circa 2012--evidence of drug dealing at Possum Creek but I've come here to skate nearly every week I've been in town for four years and never seen criminal behavior. Ever. What I have seen is kids who are polite to each other and watch out for the younger kids; I've seen parents who care enough about their young kids to be at the park, too. And I've seen a female cop who is here quite often, especially in the later afternoon and evening making sure things are alright. Possum Creek is a first-rate skate facility--it's Sphon Ranch-designed and a great addition to Gainesville's recreational amenities. Of course, the dog park and soccer fields are great, too. The county and city came together to produce a really awesome facility here. For anyone, parents or otherwise, who have a dim view of skaters, please open your minds some. I'm an adult and still skate, as do many of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s skating. I've also coached youth soccer and served on GSA's board before, so I have ample respect for traditional youth sports. Skateboarding and BMX offer something that is increasingly appealing to young people, and with the largest college-aged population in our state, Gainesville deserves a top-notch skate facility. read more

Possum Creek Skate Park has dog park split into two areas. I never follow the rule and my Chihuahua buddy tags along to the big dog section. The park typically has nice people visiting you can talk to which is a good thing since they only offer two benches at the front of the park for humans. They only offer two kiddie pools and one water fountain so in the summer months you might want to prepare for that. The only drawback is half of the park is white sand. This does not feel good on paws during the summer. Possum Creek is a great little free park if you go during the early evening when the weather has cooled down. I love Possume Creek. It has so many great features! There is a playground for the kids, fields for soccer and running around, a skate park, a dog park, a running/walking path and two nature trails! The walking/running path is a little worn and bumpy, but works well as long as you are steady on your feet! It is always nice to go walk or run and see all the skaters, doggies and kids hanging out! My favorite thing is the nature trail. One is short and leads to a swampy area, it isn't anything spectacular but it is fun. The other, is a longer trail that is quite nice. It leads into a large field that is technically another dog park. This field is surrounded by trees and feels like a hidden secret garden- it has become one of my favorite places in Gainesville. read more

We brought our dogs here for the 1st time since they received their last round of vaccinations. They loved it. Great socialization opportunity for young dogs. The other people were also very friendly. There is a wash station available. Bring towels and maybe an extra pair of shoes if you're going to interact with your dogs. We had a blast. Oh sure it's a skate park but it's also the nicest dog park in town with a clean bathroom facility and children play area football sized field and nature trail. My first though when hearing skate park was graffiti and crime but the skate park doesn't detract the skaters all seem to be a bunch of good kids dedicated to mastering a skill I've sat and watched them teach each other new tricks while walking my pups. read more

Wow - what a little surprise this place was. Spent a few hours here over the weekend enjoying the beautiful (and as of yet , insect free) weather. It has a lot for everyone in the NW corner of Gainesville. There is a nice dog park with two separate sections for small and large breeds. There is also a skate park, which seems to attract a pretty good crowd (and probably does a good job of keeping skaters out of parking lots and office parks). There is a soccer field, a play ground, bathrooms and a picnic area close by as well. Lastly there is a short nature trail along with a gazebo at the far end of the park. The skate park was built by a professional company from Long Beach California, which opened a similar (but smaller) park in Daytona. The Daytona park is already attracting skating competitions and events from around the state. So, with a little luck, Gainesville will be able to build a bit of hype from the park in time. I use to skateboard when I was a kid, but I was never 1/2 as good as some of the kids at this park were - My specialty trick was the "180 Knee Scraper" where I would try to impress Michelle Ma as she walked by, only to fall off my skate board attempting to jump a set of stairs while my friend chased after my runaway board into nearby traffic. But, we always wore helmets - safety first. At any rate, it was really impressive to see them zooming around the park! The only negative I found was that the park gets busy, so if you are looking for a quiet place to read a book or relax this may not be the perfect place for it. When I went there was a band of some sort practicing in the gazebo, a soccer practice going on, dogs Barking, skate boarders yelling and the traffic noise of a busy avenue close by. Of course, it's great to see people out having fun (it is, after all, a park not a cemetery!) so this isn't so much a negative as it is a part of the parks character. :) Thanks to the city of Gainesville for building this much needed open space project - if it keeps our youngsters active and away from trouble, it will be money well invested! read more

Took the pups to the small dog park today. This place is always so packed! I love that the dog parks are separated from the rest of the park, and that big dogs have their own space. It's nice to let the doggies off the leash to run free until we're ready to go home. Each gate entry to the dog parks has a double gate, tro attempt to keep the pups from getting free. The one fear I have is that the little dogs can sneak over into the big dog park under a gate in between. Park officials really need to keep an eye on the holes being dug in between. (I have a 3 lb. chihuahua, so she can easily run under the fence. Other than that I give two thumbs up. read more

The only reason Possum Creek gets 3 stars is because of the other features (dog park, kids playground, etc). Those are perfectly fine and pleasant. Yes, the skatepark is a nice facility from a structural standpoint, but I'll tell you why I really want to give this place 1 star. There are some very bad elements that hang out there. Not because they're douchey skaters wearing sagging skinny jeans in the summer, but because of the losers who are 20 to 30 years old who hang out there like they have no job. Oh, I'm sorry, they do have a job. Selling drugs to teenagers and even pre-teens. Yes, it happens, frequently. The only thing has kept me from dragging the boy up there and having him point out the particular dirt bags and throwing them head first into the empty pool, after breaking their boards across their heads of course, is I'm just a little too pretty for prison. So instead, the boy is forbidden from going back up there. read more

This is a great park for both large and small dogs. There are water fountains for both dogs and people, lots of spare tennis balls, and two separate areas for large and small dogs. Only downside is most of the grass is gone and 70% of the area is sand. read more

The negative to me was 3/4 of the large dog section was sand, and where the water fountain was there was a large puddle my big dog kept wanting to wallow in. Your children can play at the playground and your skaters can skate, bikers can bike, scooters will scoot, roller skaters will rolle skate. Although I'm not a skater, I feel that this park is valuable as much more than just a skate park. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is a dog park sectioned off for large and small breeds. We love bringing our dogs here for some weekend exercise and best of all, it's free! Of course, you aren't going to get all the amenities as Dog Wood Park or another premium dog park, but the value and the proximity(for us) makes it well worth it. On a few visits we have seen and experienced some issues with aggressive dogs and general riffraff. It's a shame that people even bring these dogs to the park since they are obviously far past healthy socialization, and they would be better served paying for some obedience lessons, or at the very least reading a few online articles about dog training in general. Just be aware of this if you take your dog there since there are no employees or regulations. Also, keep in mind that the dog park is essentially a fenced in retention pond, so if you go after a day of rain, be prepared for a makeshift pond and a dirty dog :) As I said before, I can't comment on the actual skate park but based on its popularity I assume it's top notch. As for the rest of the park, it's beautiful. It's nowhere near as crowded as Westside or Kanapaha, and that's a good thing because it makes it so convenient. Fan. read more

We've been to this park a few times. Has good tree coverage to help with the hot sun. There is a skate park, dog park and a walking trail. Something for everyone and different ages. Walking distance to drug stores if needing something to drink. Bathrooms, benches and water fountains are available too. My one complaint is due to other visitors when they bring their dogs. Please clean up their waste!! I always found dog waste near the kids playground area. Maybe some more dog waste bins would help. We came here to play and hunt for painted rocks. read more

Though this is based on the skate park I just wanted to point out how great the dog parks in back were as well. I visited this park recently with my small dog after being discouraged from other dog parks that don't accommodate all size dogs. There are two huge fenced in areas for large and small dogs, benches with shade for the owners, water fountains for the dogs, trash bags and a garbage can (some dog parks don't provide these). I'll be coming back here with my dog plenty of times. There is a playground to the side for children and soccer fields also. read more

Although the park is fenced in and there is a nice nature walk OUTSIDE of the designated dog park area, the actual dog park was not an enjoyable experience. 1- It is much smaller than we expected. 2- while we have lived all around the US, there has never been so many aggressive dogs (and owners) at a dog park like this one. There were at least 5 dogs who came in and started fights with all the other dogs. 3- the way the dog park is set up is not very friendly for dogs or people to enter, as everyone is gathered at the entrance where there is a huge sand cloud. 4- The park has multiple areas where dogs can fall through the storm runoff drains with a four inch mesh metal grate, instead of something more solid. I would gladly try it again, I might have just come at the wrong time, but it is almost worth it to drive 20+ minutes to go to squirrel ridge instead!!!! read more

My review is for the dog park here, although there is also a medium sized skatepark here, picnic areas, a playground, and soccer fields with goals. This dog park is huge but because there is such small amounts of shade the dogs can't really take advantage of all of it. There are some mud pits and kiddie pools that the dogs like to play in so make sure you bring a towel as well if you drive over! I have lived in Gainesville for 1 year now and have utilized the dog park at possum creek several times. As a gated, off- leash area, it is a nice space. There was also a lack of shade for owners and the large pooled area of water that smelled terrible. My 6 month old dog was treated for conjunctivitis after running in that water once. I understand that the owners are responsible for picking up after their dogs but this issue had to do with lack of drainage. read more

We've been taking our large dog to this park for the past 10 months. Although there are a few aggressive dogs, the owners are responsible enough to take those dogs out. Like Mary said, when the water fountain in the large dog side is used a lot, it creates a puddle, which most dogs love sitting/lying in. It would be nice to have a self-washing station nearby for times like that or after it rains, when the retention pond floods the large dog side. read more

My dog and I have enjoyed the park here very much. I used to walk in the less developed section--before I had a dog. The fenced areas are delightfully large so there is plenty of room for running and cavorting, so the dogs benefit from room to run free and owners benefit from knowing their dogs aren't going to run into traffic. I have a couple of concerns though. First is the fact that--like everywhere--not all owners clean up after their dogs. I've been amazed at the piles of waste left behind for I don't know who to clean up. Second is the lack of grass in the areas near the entrances, which is where most dogs hang out. And that relates to my third concern, which is that although I expect my dog to get dirty at a dog park, I don't expect her to come home with something BLUE all over her, likely from rolling around in the dirt, but that's exactly what happened today. I don't know if the dirt is treated to prevent the spread of canine diseases and such (as from dog feces, for example), but I'm going to call the Gainesville city offices on Monday to find out. read more
