When I arrived at Republic Bar and Kitchen I initially thought the place was closed. If not for a few thirsty patrons, sitting alfresco chugging back their beers (at 11:45am), I would not have realised that the doors, though closed, were in fact unlocked. I entered. This place is cavernous, as in huge & dark! Appropriately the cave-paintings adoring the walls, stretched from the floor right up to the 2nd storey roof. A troglodyte's paradise for sure. The restaurant is adjacent to the bar, with little to denote a dining area except for the cutlery, a napkin & cruet set on the tables. This area must be used for extra seating at nights when their resident DJ spins his magic on the turntables. The open plan kitchen gives the diner a bird's eye view of the chefs and one could see two of them busily prepping for service. An affable wait-person greeted me, showed me to a table & ordered my drink from the bar. The place was in darkness, I strained my eyes to read the printed menu. Suddenly, as in the Scriptures, there was light. I had apparently arrived before the opening time of 12:00pm, hence the murkiness. It was then I was able to note a blackboard menu situated next to the kitchen dispensary listing a soup & 2 mains as Daily Specials. I perused the menu. There is nothing eye catching about it, the fare is standard - all day breakfast, some lunch dishes & of course the blackboard menu. You can order some dishes entree size or main size, convenient when minimising selection without apparent compromise. It also makes your busiest service times and prep more manageable. I ordered the Steamed Mussels with coconut milk & chilli for my entree, Crumbed Calamari with aioli and a side salad as my main. The mussels were fresh. That is the only good thing I have to say about this dish. Presentation was poor, I detected no chilli whatsoever, and the closest encounter to coconut milk would have been in the aircraft that pass over Manukau Westfield on their way to the Pacific islands. The waiting person did offer me a spoon to eat this dish with, a finger bowl would have been more appropriate - 10/10 for trying on her part. The main dish arrived & although presentation had improved considerably, the aioli lacked olive oil & garlic. The calamari had been done almost tempura style, with little care though. This delicate seafood should be drained properly on a paper towel - it had not been, & so formed a tangled, clumped up mass which needed separation before ingestion. The taste however was delicious and the green salad with a very tasty dressing was the perfect accompaniment. Republic Bar & Kitchen need to tweak their food style & presentation. Two chefs in a kitchen that size should be able to produce outstanding meals, it's not as if the menu is comprehensive. I paid $45 for lunch, the most I have paid for a long time. Pick your game up Republic, I look forward to writing a more favourable review on my next visit.

It's a fairly new establishment in the area, but it's become a regular hangout for a few beers and very good food. You definitely feel the '80's vibe when you're there, and its always nice to see a little appreciation for that era. Their pizzas are delicious, particularly 'Rangi's Hangi' and 'Larry the Lamb'. They do a very nice caesar salad and my favourite main has to be the crispy chicken burger with aioli and melted brie- one of the best restaurant burgers I've had. They've got a good range of ciders and do a few cocktails to quench your thirst. They also serve most of their drinks in 600mL milk bottles, which is a really cool touch. I'd have to say that Nineteen Eighty One is best known for their fortnightly Wednesday quiz nights. The place gets packed and its always a good laugh- there's even a prize for the team that comes second to last.

I've always enjoyed the service at Cock & Bull. Always welcoming, quick and cheerful, and you know your drink is in good hands. Their food is very well done- I tend to lean towards their salads, but they do great wedges, nachos and fries with aioli. Their aptly named Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa pizzas are well priced and taste even better! Cock & Bull is a long-standing establishment in Botany Downs and really fits the gastropub mould. If you're looking for somewhere that does its job right in the Botany area, go no further than the Cock & Bull.

I got the taster and just told them to get me what they recommend/what their most popular ones were. I ended up with the Peacenik Pilsner, Back in Black, Raspberry and Mango Sour, Fear & Loathing WCIPA, and Hazesteria. Honestly, I thought all of them was good, except the sour but I never liked sours in general. I think my favorites would be either the Fear & Loathing or the Hazesteria. The Back in Black was good as well. For food from Juke Joint I also ordered the steak & cheese burger, which was also great and definitely filled me up. I also felt a bit of a buzz after finishing the third glass but the burger definitely saved me. Service was good. I ordered at the counter and they gave me a number to put on my table. They checked up on me once in a while and were quick to bring me water when I requested it. I was thankful at least to visit their main location near Mt Eden and along the Auckland Beer Mile; based on my time here, I hope they turn things around and this place stays open for another visit next time. If you're in Auckland and a beer lover, this is worth the stop. Located in a quiet residential neighborhood, the big old factor is cozy and welcoming despite the large profile. They have areas of big comfy sofas, high top tables, and seating for any size group. You walk in along the offices, with restrooms toward the back. The night I was there pub trivia was going on - I jumped in with a team and won $50NZD! The brewery area takes up most of the space, with high ceilings you feel like you're in the middle of the production even at night. The staff here was all welcoming and super friendly to talk about the beer and put together a flight. This ended up being my last stop along the Beer Mile that day, but I was thankful I got a chance to come. Cheers and best of luck Brothers Brewery!

We were able to grab a shaded table on the patio to enjoy the beach views Because I wasn't feeling well, I just ordered a salad, soup wasn't an option, while my sister got a fish and chips, surprise!! lol The service was super slow and there really wasn't that many patrons. I do believe that they were short staffed. So although the service was slow, we were in NZ and the wait staff was very pleasant and so we were very patient. Also, we're on vacation on the beach, me with a cold, we didn't want to ruin the vibe. Once our meal arrived, it was pretty good. My cucumber salad was refreshing and filling while my sister's fish and chips was good. However, while we were waiting for the next bus, we noticed they had a side counter where I thought they were only serving ice cream. Turns out you could order sandwiches and hot dog and other beach snacks. And there are plenty of benches to sit on just few steps on the beachside. The prices for ice cream stand seemed reasonable, the restaurant prices may seem outrageous. But just remember, the price is in NZ dollars. Once you apply the conversion, the meals are reasonably priced. Waiheke is an island so the ingredients are sourced from the mainland.

I'm so glad I did because I was pleasantly surprised! We had so much fun. It's quite a big place but there were loads of people eating, laughing and having a good time so it didn't feel too big at all. We had a really intimate corner where we ate which was really nice. The menu is amazing. It's pub food but not as you know it. There's loads of twists on the traditional meal. For example we ordered the roast but it came out on a chopping board for us to share with the whole table. A brilliant approach to an old favourite. Their Yorkshire Puddings were SO good, good enough to break any diet for. There was a live band playing and at the end of our meal which was a really nice addition to the atmostphere. We had loads of delicious drinks but my pick would be their Long Island Iced Tea, it was so good. So as it turns out I was completely wrong, this place is a winner.
