Food is amazing. We went twice on our trip. I like the salad and swordfish special. Amazing! My whole family got it and also waygu steak if like steak. My one complaint is they give you a plastic straw! Come on! We are on an island. Maui and Honolulu have banned them. I assumed all islands had or would have requested no straw. 1. We were so excited about going here. We were a party of 4 and we were all shocked by how bland and honestly not great food. Very strange menu too. There was a strange vibe as well. I would add the pasta literally tasted like chef boyardee. The ambience was strange inside as well. It is over priced and not worth the price. Would rate this restaurant close to a 3.5. We weren't blown away by any of the dishes and would recommend other restaurants for the price point. We shared the blue marlin ceviche -- would recommend this dish based on the flavorful broth. We also shared the crispy shrimp -- after tasting morimotos version of this dish, it fell short for me. My husband ordered the steak which was a bit overcooked and tough and I had the tofu which I found to be pretty good. My husband got the ice cream cake for dessert. Ambience is really beautiful, whether you sit outside , inside or on the porch (my favorite spot). The porch is open air but covered so if it rains you are still dry. The food was all very good. Pricey and a small menu that didn't change while we were there for 2 weeks. Not on the menu- but they made a past with butter and cheese for the kids. It was delicious and I definitely finished my kids as it was a big plate too. They had a wagu Goyza as a special that was yummy with a great sauce. I also really liked the fried spicy shrimp with mushrooms. Cocktails were great but sometimes it's just wine available if the bartender is out. Loved the wagu steak , the chimichurri was different then I've had more chunky veg less herbs but decent . Didn't care for the cheesecake as it was made with goat cheese- gave it a slight goaty flavor. Also the chocolate seed cake was just ok- it tasted very healthy though. read more

I'm going to make this very easy for you. If you come to Kauai and you love seafood, especially Ahi, it doesn't get any better than this. The fried leeks salad is very unique and excellent. My wife's swordfish was the best she's ever had also. Service is great. If you skip desert just have chocolate martini's. Addicting if you like chocolate. Good drinks and a very good wine list without being too large. If I were the owner I would add more selection of sparkling wine and champagne. They do go well with so many dishes. WOW. Love love love this place and could not recommend it enough to anyone looking for a nice dinner in Hanalei. I was skeptical of this place because I saw a lot of reviews about the food being bland. I'm confused now because we thought all of our food was excellent (so I 100% disagree with all of those reviews). We had hiked 10 miles the day we came to Postcards so we ordered a lot of food: Caesar salad, ceviche, wagyu beef, ahi tataki, and the gluten free dessert (I forgot the name). Everything was great, and I would come back and order it all again. The wagyu was a standout - AMAZING. We didn't have a reservation and walked in and sat at the bar inside with no wait. The service at the bar by Jeff was amazing. I almost want to tell everyone to sit at the bar just so they can chat with Jeff and experience the great service. He gave us tons of recommendations, was so friendly, and even gave us a complimentary champagne toast since we were celebrating our anniversary. Lastly, the inside of this restaurant is SO cute. This was one of the top places on my list while planning our trip to Kauai. Had reservations for 5:30 and got seated outside on the patio by the entrance. It was a bit hot there, so we asked to move down by the avocado tree where there was a nice breeze which was much better. Our waiter Kevin was very friendly and helped us get familiar with the menu. 5/5 - Mai Tai (classic) - very tasty and not too strong. 1/5 - Ceviche - a bit disappointing, wished it was served with plantains or something, lacked flavor and a bit bland 3/5 - Market fish - a bit bland, liked the added texture with the mushrooms and greens, a bit too much soup with it 4/5 - Tofu - very good, loved the flavor I'm on the fence with recommending but it was a good experience for our first night in town. read more

So bummed to give this 3 stars, but on one of our frequent trips to Princeville we visited this restaurant last year and had a wonderful experience all around. So we were excited to share it with our friends this year. However, when the four of us arrived 3 minutes ahead of our reservation time, the staff took our name, looked surprised and shut the lower door on us so we would not enter. We actually thought we had arrived prior to the restaurant opening, but when we were seated, a couple of tables were already occupied. Drinks were okay, food disappointed. In particular the ahi was bland, brussel sprouts not flavorful, pasta was good, no bread options. During dinner, a large reservation party was seated and then departed, who knows why. What did happen is it seemed to turn staff into a bit of a tizzy with manager on her laptop incessantly looking at yelp reviews (why are you wasting energy on this effort when you should be welcoming to those guests who stayed???) More bummed to say we won't be going back. And my gut says this review, like others (good and bad) that don't have replies, won't have one either. read more

I loved dining at Postcards so much on our last trip to Kauai that I had to come visit again on this trip. Hanalei tends to be quiet and Postcards is the very spirit of this small, quaint, full of character town. It was a rainy afternoon and evening made better by the dinner here. I made a reservation online the same day and it was a little late for us for dinner, so we went straight to the entrees. Keep in mind that the menu is awesome but pretty small here. We ran out of vegetarian options, given I am a vegetarian and my kids prefer vegetarian food. Here's what we ordered: 1. Market Fish 4/5 2. Yaki Nori 5/5 - the Sheji mushrooms and the wasabi coconut sauce lent great flavors to the tofu 3. Situated right at the beginning of the strip in Hanalei Kauai in a cute little house on the left as you drive in. The chef has a very impressive resume so we had to come try! The menu changes frequently but today we had the crispy leek salad to start which was amazing! Hubby had the lamb chops crusted with coriander seeds and some other magical ingredients that are aromatic but not overpowering. I had the beef short ribs which was fall apart tender and served with mash and some veggies. Can't wait to come back! Dessert was the chocolate cake and ice cream pie! Cute cottage ambiance with friendly waitstaff. Garden salad was very fresh, while very heavy with the bean sprouts. The radishes in Kauai are very mild and delicious. 3 stars because the market fish (generous portion) was very dry. It has a nice crust and was seasoned well, but way overcooked. We routinely include Postcards Cafe in our visits to the North Shore. It's in a simple building on the road into town, but don't let that fool you. There's nothing simple -- or ordinary -- about the food. The Wagyu beef and lamb shank are delicious and next-level. Actually, everything, from cocktails to dessert, is of the highest quality. Our first night in Kauai we came here. It was really good. The meals aren't really shareable because the plates aren't very large. We got the duck and Brussel sprouts to share and a Caesar salad. The duck plate was delicious! 2 small pieces of duck but the flavor was so good. I recommend this plate. We also go the large Caesar salad and that was good for the both of us.
