PMTI's handling of its Graduate Clinic and recent graduate support is both unethical and misleading. In a mass email to clients, PMTI claimed the recent termination of all unlicensed Graduate Clinic practitioners was due to "new guidance" from the Maryland Board of Massage Therapy Examiners. This is misleading. Here's what actually happened: PMTI allowed unlicensed graduates to provide paid massage without legal authority. PMTI now admits this was "never acceptable." Yet for years, graduates provided massage services to paying clients under the false belief that this model was supervised and lawful. In my time at the Graduate Clinic, I was never supervised or mentored, despite the school's claims. The "new interpretation" excuse is false. The Maryland Board didn't create new law--they reminded PMTI of the existing one. This only came to light because graduates began asking whether their clinic hours could be used toward updated licensing requirements. PMTI responded by abruptly cutting everyone off. There was no transition support. Graduates were removed from the schedule with zero notice, no documentation of hours, no referrals, and no plan. For some of us, this was our only income source while finishing licensure. PMTI continues to promote unethical employers. The school shares job listings from businesses that misclassify therapists, require unpaid "auditions," and withhold compensation for training time--without warning students of their rights or labor protections. I have been preaching the good news of PMTI for years and finally thought to write a review. I have been coming for monthly massages in their graduate student clinic since spring of 2021. I find that they have lots of appointments every day and during different times of the day. It really enjoyed getting to establish in a relationship with students because of how consistent I come for services. It's always a bummer when they finish up their education and move on. I think the price is incredibly fair and I'm happy to tip the students as well. (Usually by venmo or cash). Also, The institute often offers specials where you can buy a number of appointments at once for a discounted price. I highly recommend this. Students are attentive, smart, respectful and honestly some of the best massages I've gotten, even among massages from professional spas. They don't subscribe to massages being anything spiritual and I like that it's more about taking care of the body and leaving it up to you to take what you want out of it mentally. There's no new age spiritual decor or incense or even the oil they use is simple and unscented. If you're looking for ** an experience ** this is not your place. I will continue to book appointments monthly to maintain my health. read more

I have been to massage school clinics in the past and always enjoyed my experience. I was excited to find one near my new place. I've been dealing with a giant knot in my shoulder and associated pain, so I decided to try this place out. I booked a massage with Roman (graduate student) and was curious to see what I would find when I got there. When I arrived, the receptionist was busy helping someone else and said she'd be right back to check me in. Then Roman shows up, barely says hello, and then is massively confused about what to do next. He doesn't remember his password for the system, so he can't check me in, then he can't find the form I'm supposed to fill out. This takes about 10 minutes before he tells me we'll just take care of all that after the massage is over. We go into the massage room, which is nice and private but has zero ambiance (no soothing music or candles or anything), and he tells me to undress to my comfort level. I leave on my underwear, bra, and shorts, because I figured the areas I asked to be worked on wouldn't be affected by these items of clothing. Within the first 5 minutes he asks me 2 times to take off my bra, which I finally do, even though I thought he would be able to work around it. The massage itself was pretty good, nothing amazing but decent. He was professional and draped me well, but I had felt uncomfortable based on our spoken interactions so far and I couldn't really relax. The massage ended abruptly, and he just said "OK thanks" and walked out of the room. I went out to pay and he barely acknowledged me. I have been to massage schools that have a much higher standard of customer service and this place just doesn't have it. I would rather spend 2x the money on a massage at a spa that treats me well from beginning to end. read more

My new favorite find... I had no idea this was here (right next to the SS metro) and open for customers! I got a massage from someone in the graduate clinic this week and it was fantastic. It was such a great deal (since they're in training- but many of the grad students are already licensed) and the girl I had was seriously better than anyone I've ever had at an expensive spa. It's a little institutional (duh it's a school) but if you are okay with foregoing the fluffy robes and fancy waiting room and more interested in a quality deep tissue and amazing price- go here! I almost don't want to write a review because I love being able to get appointments here at pretty short notice, but I love this place so much I'll take the risk in order to show them some love! I've been going to PMTI for years, from back when they were in Friendship Heights. I happened to move to downtown Silver Spring and was thrilled when they moved so close to me! I'm a huge fan of the student clinic--best price for a 1-hour massage anywhere ($39!!!), and basically every massage I've had there has been top notch. (Don't let the "student" part scare you--they're really very good.) The student clinicians are watched through a little window on the door from the hallway (there's a curtain, and it's closed from the inside of the room when you're changing), but I've never even noticed/been bothered by it. The one time I tried the graduate clinic, it was pretty late at night and the (male) clinician and I were the only ones around. I'm kind of paranoid, and the clinician was totally professional, but I would have been a little more comfortable if there had been someone looking into the room! (They're really good about accommodating gender preferences for clinicians if you have them.) Clinicians will sit with you first, and talk about what you want to get out of the massage, what you don't want massaged, etc. The only drawback about the student clinic is that you never see the same person twice (maybe you could if you asked? and if you really like someone I assume they'd tell you when they graduate, etc. I haven't yet just because I'm kind of hooked on the cheap price and I like the grab-bag element.) It's also illegal to tip students, so the price you see is what you get! read more

My husband told me about PMTI, and graduate student Rodas when we were dating, but I didn't have a chance to try it then. I have a chronic lower back pain, and I am constantly afraid of flare ups. I started getting massages with Rodas 4-5 months ago, and she is great! She is a graduate student, she knows what she is doing, she always finds the areas that hurt without me having to say a word! I can't believe some of these positive reviews; I bet they were written by people who work there. I had a Graduate Clinic 'massage' the first week in Oct '17. It was absolutely Awful. Man MT was extremely tentative and it really felt like he's received ZERO massage training. He has no business giving massages. I have had a lot of massage work and know what a good massage is supposed to be. This school used to be good, but, they have LOWERED there training standards to enable more people to graduate. This man had zero talent and whatever training he did attend and 'pass' was one big lie. It is just not worth the 'savings' you think you are getting by going to a school. Real sad indeed. read more

Great experience here with a graduate clinic massage! Given that it's through the school the pricing is better than what you find elsewhere and the massage itself just as good. Rooms are more basic than a spa, but they still use music and dim the lights. Clean and quiet and the staff are friendly. On the sign-in list I only saw people going to the graduate clinic (versus the students (lowest price) or the professional (highest price). read more

I have been suffering from vestibular neuritis for the last 6 years. I got tired of MD's scratching their head about what to do. A friend who is a retired physical therapist suggested PMTI. It has been extraordinary. I now get a regular graduate massage for a very reasonable price. My dizziness is slowly abating, and I'm learning things I can do for myself to speed up the process. They are also helping me with my left arm and wrist. I'm a musician, and have had 3 surgeries, 2 very recent. I have used 4 different massage therapists. Each one has had a unique approach, and has helped me tremendously. I would recommend the graduate massage if you can afford it. They charge 1/2 (or less) the going rate you would pay privately. They also know also the latest advanced techniques, so you're getting the best possible care from a licensed massage therapist. It's one of the best things I've ever done for myself healthwise. read more
