Was hanging out in Crystal Lake and stopped by Pots and Pies. Service was pleasant and with a smile from the lady behind the counter. I ordered a veggie quiche and a small apple pie to take home. I ate the quiche several hours later. I did not like the quiche at all. I thought it tasted subpar and I have had superb quiche in the past. As an apple pie lover, I did like the apple pie much better. The crust had a nice flavor and flakiness to it. I accidentally stumbled upon the bakery on an internet search. Oh, oh my! I purchased a chicken pot pie, quiche Lorraine, a daily special Beef Stroganoff and a box of tarts. I have been wanted to try this place for awhile but the timing was never right . So the other day I had a craving for some pie. So i went. I ended up getting a raspberry torte which was very good, a blackberry pie which was so so . I say that because the blackberries were a bit too tart and Im not a lover of the dough crust that was used. I also picked up two chicken pot pies which were good but the filling was a bit runny or too thin in my opinion. The flavor was good but I would think that the chicken should be shredded instead of it being cubed. As cubed give me a feeling of eating a Swansons frozen pot pie. Dont get me wrong this is so much better than that but it just reminded me of it. read more

Really nice little new bakery in Crystal Lake. We read about them in the press and visited even though it's out of the way. We had ordered our pies in advance via the website the day before, for a pickup. Then we unexpectedly arrived an hour early. We called I to let them know and they were extremely accommodating and had our order ready to go when we arrived. The avocado open faced pies were delicious with a bit of arugula and fig glaze. Unfortunately, even though the order was documented via email, one item was missing ( for which we were not charged) and we didn't know until we were 40 minutes away. It was not worth it to return and correct their mistake. In addition we really needed to use the restroom and were told there's no 'public' one available. Seriously, and they serve coffee and we drove 45 minutes to try this new place out? Oh well. To be fair, their pies were tasty and you could tell they put a lot into making them as delicious as possible which is why they have four stars. Nice pies overall. read more

I walked into this place with an open mind, and at first the employees were actually friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill the moment I spoke with the owner. She was shockingly rude and completely unprofessional, which ruined the entire visit. It's honestly embarrassing for a business owner to treat customers that way. Holy smokes. This is a true hidden gem. My sister and I went in about 1 pm on Saturday and it was empty. We split a turkey salad sandwich on a croissant that was sublime. We then got food to go. I wanted so bad to get a pot pie, but already had a homemade one in the freezer - next time for sure. My sister got a fruit pie, I believe cherry, to go and said it was phenomenal. I had a cupcake that was just okay. I think the pies are the true stars and worth every penny. Can't wait to get back up there to get a savory pot pie and sweet one for dessert. Chicken pot pie is a LEGIT 10/10, the French named ham and cheese is out of this world, and a simple PB&J on their baked to perfection croissants are better than any form of PB&J I've had in my 34 years of life. Great local bakery with a variety of sweet and savory treats. The lovely woman - I'm assuming the owner and baker - was friendly and welcoming and explained everything for the newbies in line. Took home a bunch of goodies like a croque with ham, cheese, mustard and sauce, short rib pot pie, and Mac and cheese dog. What a nice treat to enjoy over the weekend and I'm so glad I stopped in finally to try it out. I'll definitely come back because there's more I want to try and my kids will love it. read more

Fresh and yummy. My husband and I shared the Irish Curry Chicken, the dough was very flakey and the chicken curry inside was full of flavor. The apples inside the tart were baked with cinnamon to perfection and plentiful! We ordered a few pies... and warmed them up for lunch later, since we unfortunately work far from there! They were all delicious... chicken pot, beef and Mac and cheese... the beef was our favorite! The customer service was great. The backers smelled clean but no cooking/baking food smells. Wife and I each had the breakfast pie with ham, eggs and chives. The ham was diced into small pieces and a bit hard to find, the scrambled eggs were very wet, to the point that the bottom was soggy, mine didn't have much ham but the eggs were nicely cooked and not runny. I wouldn't search them out for this particular breakfast item. We also purchased a berry pie, the crust was crunchy and good but the berries were not the least bit sweet. Now, the apple pie (not apple tartine) was delicious, the crust was crunchy, the apples were cooked but not over cooked, it was juicy, very flavorful and a true delight, we'll definitely try this again. I went today based on a FB post. I arrived a little before 2 pm on a Saturday. I noticed a very small store front with a little yellow bistro table outside. I walked in and saw drinks straight ahead like coffee and tea. Then I turned a step to the left and saw the menu and the individual pies displayed along with some desserts and breakfast items. I asked them what the cutie pies were and the owner I am assuming said it was for kids but that adults liked some of them as well. I wanted to try one but they definitely seemed small and I was really hungry. So I asked what was better the chicken curry pot pie or the steak and potato one? The owner said the chicken curry but said the steak was just as good. Okay I decided to take that chicken curry pot pie to go. She asked if I was going to eat it now or warm it up at home. I said I wanted to eat it now so she warmed it up for me. I also got a chocolate croissant. So I drove and ate the chocolate croissant which was amazing and flaky! I wish I had bought two!!! Then I parked and had the Irish chicken curry pot pie. Omg was that the best pot pie I've ever had. The top was a crusty almost croissant like layer. The flavors were amazing and I am not a huge curry person. Definitely worth going back and trying more. Just a note, they only make so many pies a day, so I got the last Irish chicken curry pot pie. And also there is no crust on the sides and bottom. Which is okay with me. The top was really flaky. Some might feel the underside of the crust is a little mushy, but it didn't bother me. If you are in the mood for some delicious handmade pies this is the place to go. The staff is very friendly and the owner is great. The food is SO good, we have tried almost everything on the menu and haven't been disappointed yet.
