Warning: "Free exam" trap. I brought my cat in for a free exam offer to check a tail-biting issue. The vet spent quite a bit of time looking for fleas until she found one sitting right on top of my cat's fur. She then recommended Revolution flea treatment for a whopping ~$180 for 6 tubes, ~$76 for amoxicillin, ~$80 for Prednisolone, $89 just to shave a tiny part of his tail and clean it, plus a $12 waste disposal fee. Total estimate was around $430-$450. When the vet assistant showed me the screen with all the $$$, my jaw dropped. Of course, I declined the medications and politely asked for written prescriptions so I could get them somewhere else. Dr. Oba prescribed Prednisolone tablets, which turned out to be difficult and very expensive to find. Costco quoted me $379, CVS $136, and Walmart $247. Chewy was the cheapest, but I would have to mail them the written prescription and then wait for it to ship, which could take a week or more. I called and asked if Dr. Oba could switch it to the more affordable Prednisone after several pharmacies and veterinary providers suggested I ask whether it could be substituted. She refused. I had already provided the clinic with my cat's recent lab results before the exam, so she had his medical information. He just started feeling itchy and biting his tail about a month ago and his primary vet doesn't have available appt till end of August. At that point, it honestly felt like Dr. Oba was giving me a hard time because I declined their $430-$450 estimate and chose to get the medications elsewhere. And $180 for Revolution? Come on. Most cat owners know what flea treatments normally cost. What makes me sad is that we bring our animals to a veterinarian because we trust them. We're worried about our pets, and we expect someone who chose this profession to help us care for them, not to pressure us into paying whatever price is put in front of us. I left feeling like money mattered more than helping my cat. That's what bothered me most. I wasn't looking for free treatment. I was willing to pay for $101 ($89+12) for shaving his tail. I just affordable options so I could continue treating him. We go to the vet because we love our pets and trust them to help. Leaving there feeling like my worry for my cat was just a way for them to make a quick buck was really sad and disappointing. read more

I have been taking my pet feline, Apollo, for only about a month and unfortunately, my pet passed away due to Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). Just in the span of a month I was able to receive aid, feedback, and support that I needed in order to take care of my pet. Dr. Cora Evans was amazing, kind, and professional during the entire process; the entire team at Poway Animal Hospital were extraordinary. They made it easy to handle invoices, communicate and update my pet's condition, schedule appointments, and so much more. The team showed that they cared deeply with not only my pet, but with every pet that I witnessed come into the vet. Dr. Evans and the team of Poway Animal Hospital were determined to find exactly what was wrong with my pet and to heal him back to full health as soon as possible. In the span of 2 weeks, they were able to test my pets urine, fecal, and blood. Unfortunately, Poway Animal Hospital does not offer ultrasound, but they immediately got in contact with Stitch Veterinary Urgent Care and Surgery to set-up an appointment as soon as possible based on my pets blood and urine results, which showed positive for Bilirubin and crystals. Ultimately, my pet was diagnosed with FIP following the ultrasound. If it wasn't for the quick and effective work that Poway Animal Hospital did, I would have never known what my pet had exactly and I wouldn't have been able to give him the best possible treatment and support that he needed. Zero stars -- I brought my 13-year-old blind dog to the Poway Animal Hospital because she was in agony suffering a severe neurological crisis. She was waking up screaming in agony in the middle of the night, completely unable to be touched. Instead of providing fast-acting, strong pain relief to help her, Poway Animal Hospital refused to give proper pain medication. They only prescribed Gabapentin, which did absolutely nothing for her explosive episodes. They focused heavily on pushing for an expensive MRI on a 13-year-old dog rather than managing her immediate suffering. Because the doctors at Poway Animal Hospital failed to give her humane, adequate pain management to keep her comfortable, I was forced to euthanize her just to stop her pain. If you have a senior pet needing compassionate palliative care, beware of the high-pressure diagnostic tactics over basic animal comfort. read more

We once felt very confident bringing our pets to this clinic. Now that the original owner/vets have left, it's changed. I suspect it is now owned at least in part by venture capitalists. The new vets are very nice and seem fairly competent, but I get the feeling it's all about profit now. Our vet gave our pet a rabies vaccine by a new manufacturer. She knew this new vaccine caused fairly alarming side effects, because she told me it made her cat ill for over 24 hours. Why is she still giving this manufacturer's vaccine? Our pet is still sick after 48 hours since he received the vaccine. This did not happen with the previous vaccine from a different manufacturer. Her solution, an almost $400 blood test. I feel scammed. Plus the front desk staff are not very pleasant or cordial. Time to find a new vet. read more

The vets and staff are awesome. I've been here with my dog a number of times and have found everyone knowledgeable and so kind. Today I took my 15 year old dog in because of an issue I was concerned about. The receptionist, vet assistant and vet were amazing and so sweet. They made sure to explain everything to me and answer all of my questions. We discussed some options for imaging and tests but they were presented to me only if I wanted to have them done and I never felt pressured or pushed into getting them. If you're looking to get in your dog quick, this is not the place to go. Especially if your dog is extremely ill. I called in to see if they could check my dog in because she was super lethargic and vomiting. She refused to eat and that's when I took her to this hospital. First off, EXPENSIVE!!! If I could have just gone to my normal vet it would have been way cheaper. It was over 1k and she was just sent home with medication after several tests. I've gone to another vet with all blood work, x-rays, and medication for much less, by about 20%. Second, it took them over 30 minutes to retrieve my dog upon arrival. You call the receptionist to let them know you're there but it took them over 30 minutes to come out and get your pup. Third, the vet was really hard to understand. He had a really bad stutter and sometimes slur his words so it's hard to make out what your pet's condition is after diagnosis. Not that bad of a thing, but when you're extremely anxious waiting for your dog's diagnosis you would really want a clear understanding of it, not one you would want to keep on asking the vet to repeat what he said over and over, especially when he also doesn't finish a sentence (awkward). All in all, I would not recommend and would go to another hospital because they overcharge here. Long wait times does not justify the prices. I have to clarify that it was long wait times to drop off my pet AND pick up. read more

Unfortunate experience, as I had THOUGHT I found a new vet for my two dogs. It started off well- I saw several different doctors (some better than others) but always able to help us. The office staff wasn't overly friendly like I am used to at the previous vet hospitals. We have experienced knee surgery, vaccinations, health check ups, for our two pups with this vet. Lots of time, and money spent here. The final appt was for blood work prior to neutering appt. I had expressed concern in a prior appt that our dogs anxiety during vet appts was worsening with each appt. She recommended a sedative, and I agreed. She prescribed a medication, and recommended to provide it two hours before the appt. Fast forward to the blood work appt- they took him back, and informed them he was provided the medication 2 hours prior. The assistant came out and said they cant get his blood. I asked why- she said he was too wild. I offered to help- she denied help. I expressed concern that if blood work couldn't be completed- they would push off the surgery. She dug her heels in, and refused to take his blood. She said she would muzzle him. I asked if he attempted to bite her. Her response was "No, but I don't know what else to do". I again offered assistance- she declined. I asked to speak to the dr- they did not come out. I asked to speak to the Manager on duty- they weren't available. This is how you treat a loyal client?! Disappointing. Save yourself time, and heartache- Find another vet. read more

On 2/13 I was driving to work and witnessed a dog be hit by a car. I stopped my vehicle and while carrying the dog into my car, quickly released it was fatally injured and needed immediate medical care. I drove to the nearest vet and was turned away since they did not provide emergency medical services. Next I went to Poway Animal Hospital. They also do not provide emergency medical services to animals, but upon seeing the dire situation of dog, immediately took him in and began providing emergency care. They did not ask me for payment, information, or anything extra. They just immediately began life saving procedures for the fatally injured dog. The owner later came into my grooming salon and thanked me for stopping and getting her dog medical care, but if it wasn't for the community effort and love of animals provided by Poway Animal Hospital, her beloved dog would have never had a fighting chance! read more

I posted a review the other day but upon learning more information from my dog's new vet I feel the need to update to 1 star. I brought my dog in August due to her expressing her anal glands consistently for days- something she's never done in the 6 years I've had her. She was returned to me within 5 minutes by a very rude tech who looked at me and said "I don't know why she's even here. All dogs do that" and was sent away with no resolution or answers. Thankfully she got better and no longer was expressing them or licking anymore but then come October she is having the issue again but is now bleeding- I call the office asking for help and understanding that my dog can be difficult when it comes to this I asked if she could be sedated for the procedure. I was met with excuse after excuse from the receptionist as to why they wouldn't do any of that & none of them made sense. In my frustration I asked for my dog's records to be sent to me because we would be finding a new vet. (Which took 2 days and another phone call requesting them again) A day later we found a new vet who welcomed us, took us seriously, answered my questions and offered solutions in order to find out the root of the problem. Come to find out she had an infection and has now been treated appropriately and is feeling herself again. I am extremely frustrated and disappointed knowing this could have been avoided & even more frustrated that it took the new vet all of 10 minutes to work with me and come up with a way to do the procedure and make my dog comfortable when Poway didn't take me seriously. For the high cost of this vet their bedside manner, compassion and customer service is severely lacking. My dog has been a patient here since 2020 and I have noticed that in the last year or so the bedside manner and customer service has gone down quite a bit. The last few visits have led me to ultimately find a different vet office and after 2 visits-I have found that leaving their office was the best choice. The last visit I left feeling helpless and frustrated after a condescending conversation with one of the vet techs. I understand, appreciate and respect their job but wished they had approached our situation with a kinder more empathetic approach. I feel that the quality of care no longer matched the high prices that come with a visit to this office. read more

When we had some out of town guests bring their new puppy in we never expected that we would have to use Poway Animal Hospital's emergency services. One night the little guy developed sudden lethargy and taxed breathing and we came here after other options told us they were at capacity. It's always emotionally trying when a fury family member suffers from a sudden medical emergency and of course a financial shock but the staff here was patient and explained the situation with updates, answering all and any questions with compassion and kindness. I'm happy to report that while the little guy was touch and go for a while he managed to pull through and is doing more robustly than ever! I know that those working in veterinary practice can get stressed with dealing with the tough situations involving other people's four legged family members so this is a heartfelt thank you and a reminder that everything you do is appreciated and makes a difference to those lives you touch. After researching this animal hospital through various media outlets, I felt confident that I would experience a very good service. We'll I was wrong and on many accounts. Before I mention them, I will gladly give a shout out to the front office staff for their pleasant and professional behavior. I brought my pet, a small dog to have her examined and evaluated as it had been sometime she had been assessed by a veterinarian. Things went well until I was placed into an exam room. A young lady entered the room. She did not introduce herself, so I asked who she was and if she was the doctor. She replied she was the Veterinarian Assistant. It became immediately apparent that there existed a language barrier at both ends, meaning, I had great difficulty understanding her English and I felt she did not grasp my conversation. No doubt, this impeded the opportunity for me to clearly cover with her my concerns with my pet and it was obvious she was restricted in her ability to verbally communicate. After she left, the doctor entered the examination room shortly thereafter. She did introduce herself and went about asking the appropriate questions as to the reason for my visit. She performed an overall examination and recommended the trial of medication to treat the gastrointestinal issues of my pet. This took all of 5 minutes. She recommended that she attempt to obtain a stool sample with a Rectal examination. Unfortunately, I agreed as the exam was unsuccessful, and a stool sample was recommended. I regret I put my pet through this unnecessary Retal exam when it was certainly painless to gather the needed medical information via a stool sample. Thereafter, the veterinarian assistant returned to the exam room and told me the Rectal examination was not successful and a stool sample would be necessary. She affirmed that medication would be provided to treat the diagnosed issue. The doctor did not return to the exam room to discuss the outcome with me nor field any of my questions, which I indeed did have. Instead, upon checking out and paying my bill, I was told medication was being provided. I asked for the name of the medication and upon learning of it, declined to allow my pet to take it based upon the potential side effects of the medication. I hope I am coming across as a whiner or as someone who is overacting. Please keep in mind that I was a new customer to this clinic and that a "Comprehensive" evaluation was described as the service provided that day. Seriously!! There was nothing "Comprehensive" about the examination. I have worked in the medical field for over 50 years, managing physician practices, and clearly understand what represents a Comprehensive evaluation. This was not. I also understand how important it is to establish a physician patient relationship to create a level of comfort and confidence. In this case, the effort to establish a relationship with me, the customer, was less than optimal. Certainly, the staff, including the veterinarian, knew this was my first visit to their clinic and perhaps they could go a little bit above and beyond their level of attention and service to demonstrate they are as good or better than the ratings on Yelp. To say the least, I am disappointed with the service product provided by the medical staff. Maybe they simply were having a bad day! Regardless, I do not intend on returning to this clinic and cannot, in good conscience, recommend this clinic to anyone else. Just going through the motions is not good enough. read more

I came here last week for an emergency appointment because I noticed my cat had a loose molar. When I took him in, I wasn't able to go in with him because of Covid and social distancing, but it took about 15 minutes for the doctor to look at him and call me back to let me know he needed some extractions and that they didn't know which teeth because he wouldn't let them look in his mouth. They ended up doing some bloodwork and I got him back promptly. This entire appointment cost me 200 dollars and they estimated a cost of about 2000 dollars for the procedure depending on which teeth needed extracting. The receipt that they gave me was completely ineligible and I couldn't read what notes the doctor commented, or what the costs would be per procedure. The next day, I had an appointment already scheduled at Thrive in Escondido and paid only 35 dollars. I sent the bloodwork over but that would have only been about another 35 dollars had I waited. I didn't wait because I noticed the loose molar and panicked. The total cost of the appointment was 550 with the 6 extractions he needed. Poway Animal Hospital overcharges you like crazy. The extractions should have been less than 1000 dollars. Hospitals like this are the reason why people are scared to take their animal to veterinary hospitals because the costs are so extreme. I would have saved 200 dollars had I not panicked and come here for a 15 minute exam. Go to a different hospital and save your money!!!!! read more

I am so overdue in writing this review - we switched to this vet from another in the area about a year ago. My biggest regret? That we didn't bring our dog (Wills) to this vet years prior. It does not matter who is answering their phone, doing the office intake or treating the dog - they are ALL kind, caring, respectful and above all - love animals. We have had more than a few needs to take our dog there this past year - each time we feel like we've gotten their best advice and appropriate attention. A few months back our dog started coughing in the evening and progressively got worse throughout the night to the place we thought there may have been some sort of blockage. When the sun came up we started to drive down Poway Road towards another animal hospital with 24 hour care and decided just to stop at our vet in the off chance someone would be there at 6:30 am. Guess what? Someone saw us through the window; opened the door and took us right away. I was in tears thinking we were quickly losing our dog. We got help right away and while I won't bore you with the treatment plan I can say that he did get better and with their help. The doctor followed up with us a couple of times over the next couple of weeks to make sure all was well. We got our dogs teeth cleaned this past week - and I can assure you they were completely set up to handle the appointment in light of the coronavirus - we called from the car, they picked the dog up from us with masks and gloves and... all is well. Due to the covid policy, we weren't allowed to go into the room with our dog. Then it took another 45 mins for them to call me back and checkout. I understand sometimes they are running behind. 15-20 mins waiting time is acceptable. But it took more than 1.5 hrs for the whole appointment. They can do better to respect clients time. read more

Man this is a sad review to write since we are moving out of the area. When I moved here in 2018 I was extremely apprehensive since I have had the same vet in Virginia since I adopted Sloan. Dr. Shinzaki and Dr. Smith (even though he is a CSU grad us Wyoming fans won't hold that against him) were amazing to Sloan and to Star once we brought her in. They always call and follow-up and I certainly missed going inside since the pandemic since everyone is welcoming. Sloan just trots on in like she owns the place and Star has gotten better though still a terrorist. I cannot thank Poway Animal Hospital enough. They saved my dog's life. My male Cavalier King Charles (Charlie) suffered heat stroke just last week and he was extremely close to death when we arrived at the clinic. The vets and the entire staff went into immediate full life-saving emergency procedures and pulled off a minor miracle. I have subsequently learned that dogs which suffer heat stroke routinely pass but the PAH vets and staff vividly demonstrated via extraordinary and timely care that my dog was instead, going home! Now, the treatment alone would be much more than worthy of a 5 star review, right? Not so. Over the last 9 days since the heat stroke occurred either one of the vets or a tech have phoned me to check up on Charlie, initiate follow-up tests, suggest the best food items, and expressed continued, way beyond ordinary, sincere concern. Drs Smith, Shinzaki, Baydian and all of their wonderful staff are indeed magical. Often in life, folks will write all sorts of positive adjectives in a review of a business while in fact, the performance was simply routine. Heck, I will admit I've done it myself and on numerous occasions. The difference with this review and with Poway Animal Hospital is that they are not only heroic due to their extraordinary technical expertise but in addition, these folks care as much about my pet as I do. This is no "ordinary" animal hospital! These are dedicated, caring human beings who I cannot ever thank sufficiently. read more

That was the first time I was trying Poway animal hospital. My cat was only six months and Dr smith did the most amazing job to fix him. All the other clinics asked for over 3000 dollars for the surgery but I only paid about half the price here. We recently had to put him down when he developed some serious health issues that were compromising his quality of life. I have been taking my 5 year old doberman here to see Dr. Smith since he was a puppy. I absolutely love Dr. Smith - he always takes the time to listen to and address all my concerns, no matter how minor. I have also been able to email him pictures/video of my dog with my questions and he always calls back or responds reasonably quickly (obviously he has to see other patients or may not be in the office that day). Everything was fine until she started sneezing a lot, oftentimes with a lot of colored discharge. After multiple months and different antibiotic treatments, she was still getting worse, and I got the feeling that the other vet was just jerking me around, trying random stuff now. So I called Dr. Smith for another opinion and gave him her full history. We spoke on the phone for a long time and he said that he thought it could be some sort of tooth infection, which could affect the sinuses - something the other guy had never mentioned before. So I took her in the morning, and that same day, they put her under anesthesia and sure enough, she had two broken teeth that had gotten infected. She has been doing great since! Another time, when my dog was young, he had gotten this weird growth on his abdomen. All the vets were baffled as to what it could be and instead of taking shots in the dark, they actually referred me to a specialist. Unfortunately, even the specialists never figured out what the heck was going on with my dog, it just slowly went away on its own. But the point is, these vets won't just take your money and try random things until you get frustrated enough to leave or the problem goes away on its own. I take my time to search high and low for good care for my fur babies and this place has exceeded my expectations! We bring our 8 year old and 2 year old cats and our border collie puppy here for all concerns and needed exams. Dr. Smith is always so informative, helpful, and honest (which is a rare quality in today's world!) Some key moments that highlight this are: our kitty having eye issues with a simple and clear explanation/fix from Dr. smith versus surgery that previous vets had tried to sell us in with a big price tag, our pup having signs up hip dysplasia with a thorough and consultative approach to our options from surgery, to supplements and preventative care (they even had a specialist come in to meet our pup and consult with us), to a phone call to settle our minds when on a road trip and our pup had diarrhea. Oh! And we got pictures via text after our pup had surgery to keep us up to date! The front desk staff is also always welcoming, kind, and playful with our pets.
