If I could give more than five stars, I would. Dr. Ko was Cookie's veterinarian for nearly three years almost her entire life until we relocated out of state almost a year and a half ago. Throughout that time, he provided consistent, knowledgeable, and ethical care. I first brought Cookie in as a puppy after a stressful emergency visit elsewhere. Dr. Ko took the time to review everything thoroughly and helped clarify what was necessary and what wasn't. From that point on, he became our trusted provider. Over the years, he was our trusted partner in Cookies treatment and supported us through recurring medical concerns, specialist visits for urinary issues, managed two procedures, and always took time to explain treatment options clearly. What stood out most was his honesty and clinical judgment. He never pushed unnecessary interventions and was respectful of both my questions and my concerns as a pet owner. He remained patient and focused on education rather than upselling. Even as I have moved they have been understanding patient and professional as if needed records to visit Canada and WA with my cookie. Most dogs dread the vet, but Cookie was always happy to walk through their doors. I'm incredibly disappointed with my experience at this veterinary clinic. I brought my golden retriever in for her first appointment due to a serious paw allergy, and instead of receiving helpful, compassionate care, I walked out with an outrageous bill and more frustration than answers. The doctor who saw us, Dr. Jennifer Menghani, turned out to be a trial doctor; a fact that was never disclosed to me during the appointment. I only found this out later when I tried to express my concerns to the clinic owner, Dr. Young Ko. If I had known I wasn't seeing a permanent or experienced staff doctor, I would have reconsidered the visit entirely. During that first appointment, I was told my dog also had an ear infection, and I was charged separately for ear cleaning, ear medication, and ear microscopy; all without any clear explanation beforehand. Then came charges for shaving ONE paw and more microscopy testing for her paw. I was pressured into agreeing to all these procedures because they were presented as essential, and as a first-time visitor just trying to help my suffering dog, I trusted them. The microscopy testing alone cost me $130, and the only results I got were handwritten notes saying she had a yeast infection and pus; nothing comprehensive or professionally documented. When I brought this up at the follow-up, the owner had no satisfactory explanation and took no responsibility. I was also prescribed Apoquel for her allergies, with no warning about potential side effects. My dog became extremely drowsy, lost energy, and her appetite dropped significantly. None of this was mentioned in the medication instructions, and the clinic failed to provide any guidance on this. When I brought this up, again, no accountability. I'm new to San Diego and trusted the glowing reviews I saw online, but I regret coming here. This clinic is overpriced, lacks transparency, and seems more focused on upselling services than providing trustworthy care. Please think twice before bringing your pet here; I'm now looking for a new, honest vet who won't nickel-and-dime me or experiment with my dog's health. read more

I've been looking for a vet clinic for the last few years where I can entrust my cats ever since I've moved to San Diego. The clinics I've been to are either too far, too hard to get appointments, or just simply horrible. But I think with RB Vet clinic, I cautiously think I may have found the one. It's about 5 minutes from my house, situated in a residential area. It's a small place. Maybe like 3 rooms. But it's staffed pretty well. I can tell they are popular because when I called last year, they were not taking new patients. I tried again this year and finally got in. After I'm 'in", getting an appointment was not a problem. They're pretty accommodating and best of all, open on Saturdays. When I got in, I didn't have to wait too long to be seen. it's always a concern of mine how well a vet knows cats, as most vets are dog-heavy. But Dr. Ko seems a knowledgeable practitioner. My cat needed bloodwork and urine test. The doctor himself drew the blood and also urine, right in front of me in the room. That means a lot because you never know behind closed door if your fur kids are being manhandled. So being able to see it done puts me at ease. Of course not every cat/dog are candidates for in-room blood draw, but luckily my cat was behaving that day. Dr. Ko called me the very next day to let me know of the lab results. My cat ended up needing to be put on medication. He called it into a compounding pharmacy right away and I heard back from them the following day and was able to get the ball rolling. I've also emailed the office several times, and receives a response within the day. I appreciate the promptness of Dr. Ko and his staff to address my concerns and needs. It means a lot to anxious pet parents like me. read more

When Dr. Ko entered the room he bluntly said my dog smelled (and in a bad way made a face). That's why I took my doggie in, incontinence, 1st time checkup, and care. Dr. Ko should have been kinder to my Sr. doggie (15 yrs old). He instead looked for dental work and said he could operate on his teeth. I said he had that done in the past (w/another vet) and now he's older and he said he had just operated on a 20 year old dog. Dr. Ko failed to do a thorough exam of my doggie's bottom, underside and real issue of incontinence. It made me feel he was repelled by my doggie. Unfortunately, I fell victim to letting him take lab exam to see if ok to operate. A blue haired girl w/pigtails and earrings, nose rings galore gave me the cost. It looks like this place is in it solely for the money. Lack of care was shown to my dear pet. I do not recommend Dr. Ko and his money making , lack of kindness and care business. read more

Proceed cautiously. Or just don't proceed. Dr Ko took one xray, told me it was lung cancer and to bring the dog back in to be put down when he doesn't eat for 24 hrs. That was it. No further investigation. No attempt at treatment, no attempt to make my dog comfortable. I was the one who had to ask for the prednisone, which was really really helpful. I got a second opinion and discovered that it was actually fluid around the heart that was killing my dog imminently. I was able to get that fluid drained twice and we were able to get the incredibly valuable time together that we both so needed. The dog smiled until the last breath. The memories from those couple weeks will last a lifetime and will help ease the pain. I would never take my pet to this place again, for any reason. I'm completely disgusted by the way the doctor handled the situation. Had I not gotten a second opinion, the dog would've been dead days later instead of weeks later. I can't thank them enough for the excellent care they provide to my dogs. They are so responsive and caring. The ENTIRE team is wonderful! Recently, we had to sedate my anxious pup for dental and ear cleaning and to remove a cactus needle from his paw. I was a nervous wreck but they were so kind and allowed us to stay as long as needed. This group is the absolute best vet I have experienced. I would recommend everyone to their pet care. Each of the staff was kind and helpful, they are efficient and polite. They were able to quickly answer phone calls and help my pet be seen in a timely fashion. They gave me a heads up to have my pet fast prior to the appointment in case he needed a surgical service and could get it same day -- which he did. That heads up and flexibility was so helpful and convenient, it helped save me multiple trips out. They were able to fit his additional services on the same day and I felt comfortable leaving my pet in their care. The vet, Dr. Ko, was so kind, gentle and patient. My dog does have some anxious tendencies, and Dr Ko approached him expertly. I felt heard and that he addressed my concerns, he also gave me time and space for questions, which was sooo refreshing as I know many providers are rushed for time. They kept me well updated and were transparent (and very reasonable) with the pricing. They called to check back in and helped accommodate me and my schedule for picking my dog up. My dog is my best friend and I am always nervous to leave him in the care of others, but I know that at Rancho Bernardo Vet Clinic, he was going to be taken very well care of. When I picked him up, they made sure Dr Ko was able to come chat, answer any/all the questions I had and he was so patient and kind. I call just about every week (yeah, I'm annoying) and they always listen to my concerns and give me the best advice. The prices are incredibly reasonable as well. I started going to this vet when we moved to San Diego a couple years ago. My first experience there was great. Very kind and professional staff and Dr. Ko is very knowledgeable. They're super chill and non-judgmental as well. I remember knowing I liked them a lot when the vet tech said the phrase "you're his mom, you know best" after bringing my dog in to get his back leg looked at after a likely torn CCL a couple years ago. No emotional baiting or pressure to get a ton of tests and procedures done. They suggested some supplements and stayed in touch with me while his leg healed on its own without surgery. I wasn't opposed to surgery if it were necessary, but it was nice to not be guilted or pressured into it. Today, my same little guy got his teeth cleaned and I cannot express to you the level of genuine care and love they showed my baby. I brought our 13-year-old Silky Terrier to see Dr. Ko for the the first time on Friday afternoon, April 22nd. Despite the fact that I had made an appointment elsewhere by mistake and wasn't on their appointment list, they asked me what was going on and offered to squeeze us in if we could wait ~30 minutes. We were specifically referred to Dr. Ko by a dear friend, so we waited. He immediately identified probable severe anemia, ran a blood test that confirmed it and proceeded to call two different veterinary hospitals to see if they could take our pup in over the weekend to run tests and see what is causing her anemia. He was concerned enough to recommend that I not wait until Monday, but drive directly to the hospital. His office only charged me for the blood test - no visit fee, no "time" fee for his time calling two different hospitals or sitting with me to explain why it was serious. I can't speak highly enough of this level of service and integrity. If our pup does survive, she will be a new patient of Dr. Ko's! read more
