Microscopy testing: $65 for the ear and $66 for the skin scraping, but no proper examination was performed.

I'm incredibly disappointed with my experience at this veterinary clinic. I brought my golden retriever in for her first appointment due to a serious paw allergy, and instead of receiving helpful, compassionate care, I walked out with an outrageous bill and more frustration than answers. The doctor who saw us, Dr. Jennifer Menghani, turned out to be a trial doctor; a fact that was never disclosed to me during the appointment. I only found this out later when I tried to express my concerns to the clinic owner, Dr. Young Ko. If I had known I wasn't seeing a permanent or experienced staff doctor, I would have reconsidered the visit entirely. During that first appointment, I was told my dog also had an ear infection, and I was charged separately for ear cleaning, ear medication, and ear microscopy; all without any clear explanation beforehand. Then came charges for shaving ONE paw and more microscopy testing for her paw. I was pressured into agreeing to all these procedures because they were presented as essential, and as a first-time visitor just trying to help my suffering dog, I trusted them. The microscopy testing alone cost me $130, and the only results I got were handwritten notes saying she had a yeast infection and pus; nothing comprehensive or professionally documented. When I brought this up at the follow-up, the owner had no satisfactory explanation and took no responsibility. I was also prescribed Apoquel for her allergies, with no warning about potential side effects. My dog became extremely drowsy, lost energy, and her appetite dropped significantly. None of this was mentioned in the medication instructions, and the clinic failed to provide any guidance on this. When I brought this up, again, no accountability. I'm new to San Diego and trusted the glowing reviews I saw online, but I regret coming here. This clinic is overpriced, lacks transparency, and seems more focused on upselling services than providing trustworthy care. Please think twice before bringing your pet here; I'm now looking for a new, honest vet who won't nickel-and-dime me or experiment with my dog's health.

Wow! Dr. Ko had great ratings and now I know why!!! He is exceptionally kind, professional, caring, preventative, and thorough! He took his time to get to know my pets, caught a "borderline" test result that my previous vet never informed me about, and read both of my pups medical history and Embark DNA results on their first visit. I am so happy to have found this clinic! Thank you!!! Love, Dyson and Loki

Dr. Ko has been our cat's vet since 2020 (or 2021) when we moved to the Rancho Bernardo area. We moved to San Marcos in Nov 2022 and though there are many vets in my area, the drive to Rancho Bernardo is worth it! I trust Dr. Ko and his staff and my cats are very comfortable as they can sense how much he loves animals and takes great care of his patients and owners. Dr. Ko has performed delicate surgery on our cat Tashi and I trust him implicitly. I won't even consider services with another vet... they just won't be Dr. Ko.

    The love of my life

Proceed cautiously. Or just don't proceed. Dr Ko took one xray, told me it was lung cancer and to bring the dog back in to be put down when he doesn't eat for 24 hrs. That was it. No further investigation. No attempt at treatment, no attempt to make my dog comfortable. I was the one who had to ask for the prednisone, which was really really helpful. I got a second opinion and discovered that it was actually fluid around the heart that was killing my dog imminently. I was able to get that fluid drained twice and we were able to get the incredibly valuable time together that we both so needed. The dog smiled until the last breath. The memories from those couple weeks will last a lifetime and will help ease the pain. I would never take my pet to this place again, for any reason. I'm completely disgusted by the way the doctor handled the situation. Had I not gotten a second opinion, the dog would've been dead days later instead of weeks later. Those weeks meant the world to me.

My dog Petrie (Pug, 8 years old) was suddenly vomiting blood and also had it in his stool. I was panicked, because in the 8 years I've had him, I've never seen him sick like that. I rushed him to an emergency vet even though B street is his primary care vet. The emergency vet had us wait for two hours just to hand us a pamphlet of where else we should go (in all fairness I'm sure there was more emergent medical issues going on there that they had to tend to first, and I was going to be on a long list of waits) but B street was at capacity that day and after I told them the issue they squeezed us in. They even gave us a private waiting room where the air conditioning worked better to wait in because my pug is a brachycephalic breed which usually do not do well in hot environments. During the first visit Dr. Olsen was very helpful and comforting to Petrie. She went over all the issues she thought it could be, all while petting my dog and making us feel comfortable. After labs/tests came back she explained everything in detail and very thoroughly about probiotics/antibiotics. Unfortunately I had to bring him back a few days later because his itching got worse (I'd assume unrelated to the first visit, he's just always had allergies) but he had a scratched so much overnight he had a horrible hotspot the next day. They told me I could come in the next day without hesitation and no appointment. The Doctor that saw him that day was Dr. Elena. She was just as professional and compassionate. She gave me tips and tricks on how to treat the itching better, and put him on a few more antibiotics after they shaved and cleaned the hotspot. I received two follow up emails reiterating treatment and what we spoke about in person. Not automated, real person to person emails. I really appreciated that. Petrie is doing much better thanks to these amazing women! Of course along side their brilliant team of techs and receptionists. The whole operation is so dialed in and kind!! Can't sing their praises enough.

They stay pretty busy, and the waiting area is small, so I prefer waiting outside or in my car since it gets crowded inside. They also take your dog in the back without you well before the exam, vaccines, or procedure. Just a heads‑up if that's something you care about or prefer to be present for. The staff themselves were very friendly -- upbeat, bubbly, and kind -- which definitely helps the experience. I was referred here by the rescue, so I came in for two vaccines. Even though the wait was long, everything went smoothly, and I got a call a few hours later to pick up my pup. Overall, a busy walk‑in clinic with friendly staff and straightforward care, but plan ahead for the wait and the drop‑off style.

Sassy is a chunky snowshoe breed, 10+ years old. Her previous owner passed away from Covid, and she became part of my family in 2023. In 2025, I was devastated to learn that she has Stage 4 renal disease. Her liver is failing, and without proper treatment, her life would have been cut short. Dr. Karen Kurowski and her incredible team--Lindsey, Nate, Sunny, Hyda, and the other compassionate vet techs--have been a lifeline. They gave me a clear plan to follow, supported me with each step, and have truly helped sustain Sassy's life. She is now on the right medications, and I give her fluid injections every other day as her "second kidney." Because of their care, Sassy has been able to live not just longer--but better. What I love most about this hospital is that it feels less about money and more about what's right for the animal. Veterinary care can be expensive, especially when you have multiple cats like I do. But here, I have always felt they try to keep costs reasonable and make sure I'm not overwhelmed. They are honest, practical, and thoughtful--always focusing first on the well-being of my pets. That kind of integrity means the world to me. Today, Sassy is thriving in her "fourth quarter." She doesn't know she is ill. She lives with joy, gratitude, and happiness every single day. It is my honor to care for her, and it is thanks to Dr. Kurowski and her team that she is enjoying this chapter of her life so fully. For anyone looking for a veterinary office that combines expertise, compassion, and fairness, Scripps Ranch Veterinary Hospital is that rare place. I will always be grateful to them for the care and love they've shown Sassy--and me.

I took my dog here 11 years ago now for spay surgery. While recovery went well and no complications at the time occured I discovered 10 years later after she had an additional abdominal surgery for a tumor on her liver by another vet that surgical gauze had been left from a previous surgery- the only previous surgery she's ever had was her spay. Because of the left foreign matter in her abdomen her body -luckily- encapsuled the gauze which then adheared to multiple organs. To the extent that when we removed it during her recent liver tumor surgery a portion of her intestions and pancreas needed to be removed as well and everything sent for biopsy. While I'm thankful this is the "worst" that happened because of this negligence- the alternative was her going into sepsis and dying. So I guess pick your poison? When I contacted the office to report - essentially malpractice- initially I was left to feel ignored. My information was taken and I was told the owner of the practice (same owner as when the initial surgery was completed) would phone me back. After a couple follow up calls the office manager (not vet owner as requested) called me back to get my info and story. I eventually was put in contact with the owner Dr Dio. He listened and apologized and then informed me that vet was no longer there. But not why. Nor would he provide their license number so I could report this to the vet board. Ultimately after explaining the situation and asking for reimbursement of the additional 1600$ spent on the additional surgery and biopsy because the mass was unknown. He offered me free vet treatment at his office. (Y'all almost killed my dog? Why would I go back there for treatment??) When I expressed that wasn't satisfactory he then offered a refund for the initial surgery...$300. I again expressed this isn't what I good enough for the problem that occured. He left the phone call that he would discuss with his office manager and get back to me- surprise surprise- they never contacted me again. Once again- this is not a review on the current Dr pearson- I've worked with her at other vet offices in the past and she's wonderful. But this is reflection on how the owner Dr Dio handles situations that occur with vets under his practice.

I've heard about some Veterinarians who tend to pad their bills with extra services and items, but until this visit I hadn't really experienced it. We brought our older (and basically healthy) dog in today because she was sick on Thursday (vomiting food & water). She felt better on Friday and today, but we brought her in anyway to get checked out. Cue the huge bill! The original estimate on the high side was $1300, and we had them lower that estimate by a few $100 by removing a couple of services including xrays. Then after she'd been there for a few hours, they indicated that she needed more tests to the tune of nearly $1000. We had them do most of them, but not all. As I'm writing this on Sunday, Cali is feeling much better, she's now on a low-fat diet, and the tests that they did all turned out negative. (We're still waiting on the results of the urinalysis.) Thank goodness, but jeez... They also negatively impacted my bank account. I'm glad my dog is feeling better, and she's worth any cost honestly, but I sincerely feel that some of things they did were not necessary, and didn't need to be done this time, or could have been pushed forward and a determination about their necessity could've been made after we made some changes and monitored her. It is what it is at this point, but I just suggest that you pay close attention to the estimates and bills at this Vet Hospital, and knowing your pet, make the right decisions for them, whatever they may be. Mahalo.
