Anita is a super cute small town packed with charm and this state park is the perfect place to rest and relax and stretch your legs. They have nice basic facilities and a little free library you can peruse. It is a wonderful park and well kept. It's become one of my favorite places in Iowa to visit and my fondness grows each time.

They have several bath houses around the grounds. It was a pretty quiet time, no one was rowdy or too loud, most people kept to themselves. The campground offers wood and fun events like movies each Saturday. Great hosts, easy to find and book!

I came on a warm October afternoon to check out the nine-hole disc golf course. My first impression was a good one. This course is well maintained: manicured fairways, clean baskets and concrete tee pads. While none of the holes were much more than 300 feet from tee to pin, there were plenty of trees and shrubs to add a bit of challenge to your throws. The first four holes are just north of the parking lot as your drive in. The back five are tucked behind the monument, and offer a more secluded environment, complete with sweeping valley views in between some seriously tough shots -- especially hole seven, a real beast of a hole. As is the case with a lot of local courses, I spent much of my first round attempting to find the tee pads, a few of which aren't marked properly. This is easily fixed, however, so hopefully the local disc golf club has something in the works.

This a perfect place for a run, walk, or bike ride with nice wide paved paths. The lake is good for small boats, kayak, paddle boarding, and fishing. There are some exit points around the perimeter that clearly go into the adjacent suburbs. Not many trees (aka little to no shade), but a nice peaceful walk regardless.

There was a…read moreFly Fishing Cabin Retreat for Fly Tying sponsored by the center as well as by Central Iowa Fly Fishing. We stayed in the dorms and had our meals at the dining hall. It is truly a 4 star lodging compared to my previous experience at other camps in PA, MA, and OK. There are tons to do if you want a break from fly tying-- Atl-atl (spear throwing), archery, trail hiking, plus exploring the lake. I went ice fishing for the first time at the park and it was pretty cool. The dorms are great-- hot water and heat a major plus in addition to linens and bath towels. Dining hall is pretty large and food was pretty good with sticky buns for breakfast, soft tacos for lunch, and fried chicken for dinner. Be sure to check out a weekend stay for their education series. You will not be disappointed.

Just 30 minutes North of the metro, De Soto Bend is an incredible wildlife refuge. With many trails…read morerunning parrallel to the Missouri River, it is an enchanting sight. There are a dozen trails on the grounds, with plenty of bird viewing sights. There is even a Bald Eagle viewing area and it's my husbands favorite spot. There are several picnic areas and grills to make a whole day of it. Because this is a National Park, there is a very small fee to get into the park, but it's on the honesty policy. After you walk your heart out, head over to the visitors center for even more viewing areas and a fun historical tour of the giant ship that sank right there when the Missouri River was wider. The Bertrand museum is incredible, every item pull from the ship was perfectly presevered from the silt in the ground, that in itself is worth the drive. If you're looking for a family fun day with a little history lesson for just a few dollars, De Soto Bend is the place to go.

The parking for the campgrounds did seem a little clustered for trucks with trailers or RV's. However, I'm not sure that they have much room for expansion. In conclusion, I will definitely be returning for future fishing trips, as well as, looking into camping for the weekend.

The Iowa DNR has caused/allowed Blue Lake to drop 8' - leaving it impossible to boat in the lake. And they spent YEARS literally neglecting this park. They just don't care - and it shows. What once was a beautiful and heavily used park has become a ghost town - and for good reason. Years ago it was a really nice park. Now it's not - and this is completely on the Iowa DNR.
