This welcome center re-opened in November with a major renovation that turned a rather hum-drum welcome center into a racing themed spectacle that is quite cool. The welcome center has room for 63 cars, 128 trucks, and it has four accessible parking spots. The welcome center also does have restrooms, including a family restroom, and vending machines. There's also a visitor's area with pamphlets. The racing theme is majorly cool and the welcome center has the theme both internally and externally. While I certainly haven't been to every rest stop statewide recently, it's hard to imagine that Indiana has a better one anywhere. I'm not sure there's much else I can say about Clear Creek Welcome Center, however, if you happen to be coming in from Illinois or you just want to check out a really cool welcome center this is a definite place to stop.

We visit a LOT of rest stops (no jokes about certain peoples' bladders) and I have never ever ever been to one as fancy as this one. As you enter Indiana from Illinois, you're coming into the state known for the Indianapolis 500 and this is a rest stop that celebrates that fact. From the pagoda at the entry to the interactive history 'tables' that allow you to see/play/learn more about the sport of INDYCAR racing, to the helmets, cars and beyond, this stop is all things racing. And it's new, clean and has great facilities. So if you're on 70 heading east, skip the gas stations and fast food places and stop at this welcome center. You'll be glad you did! Just know you're going to spend a few extra minutes looking around because it's not a place to run in and out and hit the road again!

Blue Star Highways are a tribute to the Nations armed forces who served in World War II. There are nice flowers and it is attended to by the Garden Club of Illinois. Plenty of signs and in particular one says Illinois remembers POWs and MIAs. Very evident that, at least in concept, the sacrifices that servicemen and women make are important in the state of Illinois. However, in the past week our Nation has lost a number of lives as our military withdraws from Afghanistan. In fact it's been one of the largest single losses of service lives in many years. While this is a nicely manicured clean rest area, someone has neglected to lower the flag to half staff, a point which I brought up to a worker, extremely politely and respectfully, here at this rest area. It is this reason, this in attention to an extraordinarily important and significant detail, that I extend a one star rating to this otherwise very nice rest area. This stop had clean bathroom facilities, and I liked the covered picnic area in particular. We ended up eating our lunch here before getting back on the road. The covered picnic area also has places to grill out. It was great to just let our son run -- our "get the wiggles out" -- in this green space. We'll definitely stop here again.

The trees have to be at least 40 years old, and they have grown in thick enough that the ground stays in shade pretty much all day. Even in the middle of summer it feels ten degrees cooler once you walk in under them. There is old-school playground equipment here, the kind most parks replaced years ago. I doubt it gets much use. Nice to see a little window of how things were back in time. Picnic benches are scattered through the trees, so you can eat something you brought along instead of sitting in the car. The whole area is well manicured and groomed. Somebody is clearly still taking care of the place, which you do not always see at a stop like this. It makes for a genuinely peaceful break on a longer drive. The bathrooms are indoors, so even with snow on the ground you can use the facilities without freezing. They were clean when I stopped. There are vending machines in the back too, which came in handy for a quick snack before getting back on the road. If you are driving through, this one is worth pulling off for instead of pushing on to the next exit.

I had to make a split second decision as my light went off to indicate I was out of gas, and rather than put myself in harms way on the shoulder, I coasted into the rest area. It was late on Sunday night and I was racking my brain, when a friend reminded me that I might have roadside assistance through my insurance. Sure enough, I was able to have gas brought to me and gave them the exact location and mile marker, as listed inside the stop. Dated, but warm with a payphone, vending machines and relatively clean bathrooms. Within the hour I was back in business and closer to a gas station than I realized. I'm very thankful to have had the saving grace that was looking out for me that night!
