Blue Star Highways are a tribute to the Nations armed forces who served in World War II. There are nice flowers and it is attended to by the Garden Club of Illinois. Plenty of signs and in particular one says Illinois remembers POWs and MIAs. Very evident that, at least in concept, the sacrifices that servicemen and women make are important in the state of Illinois. However, in the past week our Nation has lost a number of lives as our military withdraws from Afghanistan. In fact it's been one of the largest single losses of service lives in many years. While this is a nicely manicured clean rest area, someone has neglected to lower the flag to half staff, a point which I brought up to a worker, extremely politely and respectfully, here at this rest area. It is this reason, this in attention to an extraordinarily important and significant detail, that I extend a one star rating to this otherwise very nice rest area. I don't mind coming back and giving this place a second chance if I ever do come to the area. Unlike some rest stops that are shared, there are two distinct areas for this rest stop. We stopped on our way South, the stop located North of where Rooks Creek crosses the Interstate. This area provides some nice topographical variety. There is a decent size playground for the kids, a bridge crossing the creek to a dead-end lookout. The inside includes a couple of vending areas, and large clean bathrooms. Since I-55 is one of the major thoroughfares of the state of Illinois, there are large rest stops every 50 - 100 miles in both directions. Per the IDoT website, this is to promote driver safety. It also encourages frequent rest stops for those passengers who need it.

I had to make a split second decision as my light went off to indicate I was out of gas, and rather than put myself in harms way on the shoulder, I coasted into the rest area. It was late on Sunday night and I was racking my brain, when a friend reminded me that I might have roadside assistance through my insurance. Sure enough, I was able to have gas brought to me and gave them the exact location and mile marker, as listed inside the stop. Dated, but warm with a payphone, vending machines and relatively clean bathrooms. Within the hour I was back in business and closer to a gas station than I realized. I'm very thankful to have had the saving grace that was looking out for me that night!
