The rooms are spacious and well equipped but my 3rd floor room did not have a good bathroom. Shower was underpowered and in a very slippery bath with a shower curtain. Not ideal as shower curtains are not what I expect in a high end hotel, while the bath is pretty dangerous and I would be concerned for older guests stepping out. In addition some tiles were missing above wash basin. Breakfast consisted of hot and cold buffet and was very good. So some hits and misses but location was a winner.

Breakfast, which in our case came with the room, was rather blah. Not much flavor, and I think the mushrooms (a requirement for an English breakfast) clearly came out of a can. Not really any made-to-order options. For England, the price was moderate. If you're converting from dollars, it's going to sting a bit, but that's the case in the entire country.

Very large desk area with long strip lights, easy to hook up the laptop to the TV for dual screen working. The breakfast buffet was quite standard, but with made-to-order Belgian waffles which was a really nice special touch. Sadly the restaurant that I was looking forward to eating at, was closed on arrival. Apparently the hours have been reduced lately due to lack of demand, which I quite understand all things considered. The receptionist was very good with nearby recommendations, including several in the new development mini-mall which is just across the bridge from the hotel.

I was attending events in Durham for a few days and it was expensive going back and forth in a taxi. so 5 stars for the hotel experience, but be warned it's not really convenient to Durham Center It really is a castle, 700 years old, and preserved beautifully. I had a room in one of the wings of the castle and the bedroom was old fashioned but with medieval-looking furnishings. supposedly the castle is haunted and you do hear a lot of creaking during the night, but that just adds to the ambiance (in my opinion). the public rooms are very interesting, like living inside a museum. I didn't have dinner in the restaurant, but had breakfast twice and high tea in the library room and was very satisfied with the food quality, service and value. the prices on the dinner menu seems rather high and since a taxi into Durham center is about 15 pounds, you're sort of stuck here. my only complaint was being charged 30 pounds for a late checkout. late, meaning 2.5 hours, but I suppose it's in the agreement so it's their right to do it. but it seems a bit excessive.

A real, old, castle turned into a hotel…read more We had one of the Courtyard rooms. Firstly, an upper room that was kinda pokey. I complained because the sneck on the door lock could not be set, so basically anyone with a key could enter; even when the room is occupied. They apologized and moved us to a lower room in the same block, which was bigger and nicer than the first one. Oil paintings on the walls and antique furniture. No fridge or microwave, but there was a TV, telephone, portable fan, hair dryer and an iron. Oddly enough, the sneck on that door could not be set either, so I suspect they have rigged them to be that way. Nice bathroom with tub and shower. The courtyard rooms appear to be a later addition, as there is also an internal courtyard within the castle walls. That said, they don't look that much out of place. Reception is a large room in the castle with a desk. From reception, you walk through a stone corridor, then through the internal courtyard (which has some picnic tables and greenery). Then, some more stone walled corridors to get to the restaurant. Another corridor and through a hallway takes you to the "Library Bar", which is actually nicer than the restaurant and also sells food (but with a different menu); table service for food and drink. Breakfast is served in the restaurant and consists of a large room chock full of Continental Breakfast items, including cheeseboard and charcuterie. After helping yourself to the Continental Breakfast, you can then order one of the cooked breakfasts. Yes, you can have both ! And we did ! Cooked options included a Full English Breakfast, Kippers (£2.50 surcharge), Whipped Avocado Toast and a few others. All very good. I thought the rooms were remarkably inexpensive for such an experience, so we stayed an extra night as we enjoyed it so much.
