At our introductory meeting, Chris was professional, organized and thoughtful. She patiently worked through our many questions and changes that followed. When we met on site the day before the memorial, everything was ready. Chris introduced me to her son Joe, the chef and owner, and then asked me if everything looked okay. I told her that everything looked great, as knew that it would! On the day of the event, Van Noy's staff calmly brought out the trays of food while our guests listened to my husband's speech and his 15-minute video tribute. As planned, the buffet opened at 11:30a. I was hoping that the food would be, at least, good. To my delight, the food was delicious! He uses only the freshest ingredients and creates incredibly delicious all vegan dishes. I am not a vegan but if all vegan food were this good I would be a convert. He uses locally shopped ingredients including some of the finest local tofu and tempeh makers. He is about to publish his second cookbook and no doubt it will reflect the same rich cultural varieties he has presented in the first one and in the meals he has prepared. Vegan interpretations of MIddle Eastern, Thai, Chinese, Southern U.S., or whatever you wish all are lovingly prepared and served with both pride and joy. The music (not every meal) is an eclectic assortment of some of the finest musicians in the Bay Area and beyond. Phil, in addition to being a fine chef, is a musician, a shakuhachi player (that's a Japanese bamboo flute) and teacher. His deep connections to the music community allow him to invite some amazing colleagues who play in intimate house concerts. There is a sort of core "regular" crowd that I enjoy seeing but there are frequently newcomers and out of towners who go on the adventure to this non-descript West Oakland loft. The crowd (no more than 20) has always been a great part of the experience. I guess I drank the Kool Aid, ate the tofu, or whatever but I am forever sold on the Sound and Savor experience. This is definitely one of the great joys of Oakland and the East Bay.

Robert came up with an absolutely delicious custom menu for us incorporating foods from both our childhoods, with smoked brisket, ceviche spoons, succotash, camarones a la diabla, an absolutely fabulous mole.. they also did a great job making sure we had lots of options for our vegetarian/vegan/halal friends when putting together the choices for our menu. Robert's team put together a really fun arrangement of drinks options and desserts for the event as well, and somehow every selection they made managed to be creative, coherent with the overall menu, presented beautifully, and of course tasty. We got so many compliments on the food/choice of caterer for weeks after the wedding, and several people thanking us explicitly for the variety of options for non-meat eaters, so huge thanks to all the staff who made it happen! Since there happened to be a fridge onsite at our venue, the staff even managed to box up some of the leftovers and put them in a food-safe environment for us (which I've heard from other friends who got married this year is not standard! But we were so grateful to get to take home catering leftovers, since everything was so damn good!) Robert and his staff (Erica and Naomi in particular!) also did a lot of heavy lifting helping us coordinate the overall look and vibe of our wedding day! It would be just a compostable plate with food on it, or a bunch of metal trays. Lots of veggie options for me today! If you order from them, you'll see it's an "Asian fusion" menu, but today we had Thai inspired entrees. Of course, I had the tofu green curry with coconut white rice, and it was really good! It had a spicy bite, not overwhelming yet not ignorable, and the tofu was cooked to just the right tenderness. We also had sweet garlic soy tofu, with pieces of tofu about the size of a domino, with grill-like marks. Again, cooked just right, and the sweetness complemented my curry very well. Plenty of veggie sides, including both broccoli and green bean dishes, with plenty of garlic cloves. There was also a black bean, edamame & grilled corn salad with basil lime tomato vinaigrette that was nice and tangy. Glancing at their online menu, I see Japanese and Indian inspired dishes that I'd love to try. I hope my workplace orders from them again!
