This store appears to have a large variety of herbs, candles, and other medicinal products. HOWEVER, the female owner was unnecessarily rude and very unwelcoming. There were several passive aggressive comments made while walking throughout the store, including the constant reminder that the store was closing soon even though it was 30 min before closing, I even swatted at a fly that was in my face and she made a rude comment about "people always swatting at flys.." (so unnecessary) Was unhelpful with explaining any of the products, smh The rude service and constant passive aggressive comments was just so uncalled for. I've been to Present Moment on and off for the last 5 years I think? I've always loved their vast selection of herbs and tinctures. The staff is usually friendly and I typically leave feeling seen and appreciated. I recently had a horrendous experience with a staff member named Miranda. She was incredibly condescending, extremely micro-aggressive and honestly not well informed about the selection there. As a black woman who saw many other black faces in the shop, I'd say i'm afraid the she is not capable of handling her own insecurities while dealing with a direct customer. I was set on never going back but I needed herbs and henna. Both times I went back were welcoming, warm and i left understanding that it is not always the establishment and sometimes it's someone on staff? But who knows i've heard some things about how they treat some black customers so just be careful I can not honestly give present moment any rating lower than 4 stars on their herb selection but I can't say their customer service is always up to par. It's an amazing place to go to for herbs and if you have patience, you'll definitely find what you need there! read more

BEST PLACE EVER!!!! make sure you visit Dave the Pie Guy right next door too!!! they have soooo many herbs and books on just about anything you could imagine !! They crystal selection isn't hugeeee but they've got lots of good ones. Not the cheapest crystal shop either but definitely all still in a decent price range! And don't even get me started on the workers!!!! THEY ARE ALL SO SMART AND WELL INFORMED!! I don't normally post reviews but Present Moment Herbs and Books was lovely. I ordered a bunch of herbs online from them and the herbs were great quality. And my favorite part was there was no plastic used in my order. The herbs were placed in little brown bags, which I loved. Overall a really lovely shop. read more

I haven't been here in years, but I forgotten how much I love the store! Books, books, books! Books on the main floor are new books. I am into astrology and the astrology book section was taller than my head, maybe 7 feet tall. Just an amazing variety of books. They also had tarot decks, cards to interpret them, and every other esoteric topic you can think of, including UFOs. The basement had more books, but used books. So those included more main stream books, popular cookbooks, diet books, history books. I got a book down there on Sabian astrology, so sweet! The upstairs also has vitamins, homeopathy, crystals, herbs, candles. I got some herbs and the herb guy was really amazing, listening to what I wanted and helping me figure out what would be best. The cashier was super sweet and helped my boyfriend with tarot, very knowledgeable. The building is old, wood floors, and the smell is amazing from all the herbs and candles. I also got some acupuncture done there in the building and I'm not sure what other practitioners they might have working out of the building. Stop in and check it out! read more

This is the place to purchase herbs oils, stones, etc. for any spiritual work you perform. They also have a great selection of books and supplements that can be quite useful. I don't recall how long ago I found this place. I can say that I felt like I'd come home, which was nice. Not being from Minnesota, it's difficult to find places where I feel comfortable and welcome. Present Moment fits the bill every time. Questions are answered politely and without making the asker feel as though they're dumb. There are smiling faces when you wander the shop. And, you're allowed to wander the shop without being harassed in any way. It's nice to be able to get a feel for whatever may be calling me on a particular visit without feeling rushed. My son also likes this store and has chosen some fine stones for his collection here. There is always something new and interesting when I visit, which isn't as often as I'd like. They're very near a friend's house, yet I get focused on visiting her instead of stopping in. Once she moves, I'll go back to my old routine of shopping to replenish my apothecary. read more

Terrible customer service. I will never come back here again. I'd run out of herbs for making teas for medicine and care packages and decided to restock as locally as I could. The website was difficult to use and a bit expensive, but thought I'd save myself $15 shipping by going to pick it up myself scheduling it among other errands. The last time I came to pick up an order was last year while taking a plant medicine class, where they specifically said to pull in back and knock on the door, which I did while masked and my order was fine, so this time I pulled in back and called the store stating I was out behind the store for pickup as that had been where to pick up the last time I was there when the store was pickup only. The girl on the phone said, oh, you're here for curbside? We'll leave it outside for you in front, then hung up. It's January. After rain. In winter. I walked slowly and carefully to the front in painful subzero weather on pure ice and picked up my bag that indeed was plopped on the sidewalk in front of the store. Inside the window, I could see the two workers presumably chatting with a customer? friend? white dude? I hadn't known the store itself was open again. That wasn't on the website. I wish they had said something more along the lines of, I see there's parking on the street out front from the window as it's cold out if you want to pull up there, we'll leave the bag inside the door, please wear a mask. But wait, there's more. I get home and find out my order is incomplete. Mistakes happen, so I double check, then call the store to say, hey, I noticed I'm missing a part of the order that I was charged for. I'm told to drive back and prove it with my receipt. No apologies for any inconvenience, no hey let's fix that for you. It's an hour drive for me roundtrip. Who knows, maybe the worker is neurodivergent. Maybe she's got a lot going on too as it's a pandemic. But after these three very rude interactions, I'm out. A little kindness and clear communication/negotiation skills in these times would go a long way. If that's what you're looking for, don't come here. Positive: they use paper bags, which are recyclable. If I'd known they were open, I would've brought jars. So if there are any herbalists/healers in town who would like to engage in gift economy, I'll be gathering my own herbs this summer and would love to practice exchange in ways that respect plants and each other. read more

This place has a great selection of items for a good price. I was able to get everything I needed, but I honestly felt so unwelcome by the staff. It felt like I was bothering them just by being there. They acted super annoyed for some reason and were just not personable at all. It is a really great selection of herbs so I do want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it was honestly such a disappointing experience. read more

I absolutely LOVE this place, not only because it's right across the street from where I live (LOCATION, LOCATION, LO-KAY-SHUN!), but also because they sell the types of products of which I am very interested--incense, oils, crystals, herbs, books, etc., the vibe is always chill when I enter into their realm, and some of their products are very affordable. For example, they sell individual boxes of the Hem brand incense 75 cents for eight sticks. Besides, any place that Fancy Ray endorses must be good, right? LOL I believe they have occasional tarot/psychic readings here, as well, but I have yet to take advantage of those. They are ALWAYS busy, even on Sunday. I used to love this place. The selection of books, herbs and merchandise is excellent. This is where they lost me. One extremely hot summer day, I needed to procure a Tibetan singing bowl very quickly so I called to see if they had any in stock. The person who answered the phone said they had two different sizes and quoted me the prices. After receiving this information, I got on my bike and rode all the way across town to buy the bowl. Now this was not just a hot day, but a day when it was borderline dangerous to be out in it, let a lone riding a bike across town in it. Well, when I got there, they did not have any in stock and it became apparent that the person I spoke with on the phone had not actually checked to make sure they had them in stock. When I questioned a staff member, it was basically just shrugged off with "Well I guess they didn't check". Not even an apology. That was in 1999 and I never went back again. read more

A whole new alternative world is situated in The Present Moment. It's a very useful resource in Minneapolis for a wide range of tinctures and herbal medicines as well as homeopathic medicines. Bath salts and some premixed teas are also sold in bulk for a great price. Some of the pre-mixed teas they have for example are Singer's tea, Colon cleanse tea, Immunity Tea. They carry a good selection of incenses and candles, and a few from India. Those special cone incenses from India are also here in 2 fragrances - sandal and nagchampa. Of course, most of the store space is taken up by books on different religions as well as new age books for healthy living on all fronts. There are some chairs in case you have the urge to start digging into a book right there. The special orders department is helpful for finding things they don't have in the store - the only caveat is that the person who takes care of this maintains different, shorter hours. This place is awesome. You can feel the serenity right away when you walk in. I originally stumbled up on PM during allergy season looking for natural ways to rid me of my symptoms. I met with the owner, Bob, who led me to learn about Homeopathy. We have tried a few different remedies and finally found the one that works great. It's a great thing to not have to take liver poisoning drugs! I used to live in California where hippy health stores such as PM were on every corner, so I really enjoyed finding a place where I can get in touch with my spiritual side right here in Minneapolis. Present Moment is a goldmine... books on all different alternative health therapies, as well as "new age" living. They have a huge variety of raw herbs as well as chinese tea pills, homeopathy cures, essential oils and Bach floral essences. I send a lot of my clients there to get herbs and supplements. Since I was a young child, I have been referring to Present Moment as "The Stinky Store". My dad has been dragging me to this place for as long as I can remember. When I was a teenager, it carried me through my Wicca phase. Now, I love to buy incense, bath products and tea there. I think a little bit of the homopathy stuff is a little coo-coo, I'll admit it. I remember one time, a man putting a vial of something in my hand, and said "Can you feel the healing?" It was really hard not to laugh and run away. But the people are nice and friendly, and they have a great selection of herbs and incense, so I still love going there. read more

This place is amazing. It has chill warm energy & friendly staff. I get herbs from here, insence, jewelry, tarot cards, books, medicines, stones and beauty supplies. The herbalist is awesome, he really knows his stuff. He's made me some amazing mixes of herbal remedies; he researched & concocted a tea mix for my fibromyalgia and it was a miracle! I like what this store sells, but the experience in the store is really hit or miss for me. Sometimes the music is chill, the staff great, and it's fun to hang out in and browse. Other times, the music is too loud and like something you'd expect to hear in Jimmy John's once the store is closed and the staff is rocking out while they clean. Makes me turn right around and leave. Some of the staff can be really pretentious, too. Like they're cooler than you are and more spiritual so they can't be bothered to ring you up because they are too busy looking at their cell phone. read more

Loved this place until I was followed around the store like a thief. Employees tend to be subtle about it however this male clerk made sure I was aware that he was watching me and only stood a few feet behind me just staring at me while I was picking up the items I needed. He left the register and just followed me from room to room even while I was speaking with the herbalist. He yelled "No pictures" as I was trying to take a picture of a tincture I needed to mail to someone then tells my friend he needs back a flyer she had picked up even though it was a free flyer. He did not even ask about the flyer she had or apologize when I told her it's a free flyer, one would think he would know as he saw me picking it near the boiron pellets. read more

It harkens back to old school 60's-70's Minneapolis (some people would say "Hippie" but I prefer rustic, earthy, natural). All the plants and wood remind me of Tao Foods, Electric Fetus, old Haight/Ashbury. it's got a cool vibe and offers a lot of things that you can't find anywhere else. I love this place! This is the only place like this in the twin cities I know of. I live in uptown so it's super convenient to get to and has all the herbs and supplements that the other places like co-ops don't. They have an excellent book selection and lots of educational material. I go there for essential oils because they are a pinch cheaper than stores in the area with a wider variety of what I'm looking for. Helpful and knowledgable staff as well. This is a great place. I have met with the owner Bob a few times for homeopathic remedies for two different issues and he is amazing! Excellent selection of bulks herbs, incense, vitamins, bath salts, etc. Staff is generally friendly; sometimes a bit out there. The atmosphere is dusty (literally), earthy, and as unpretentious as you can get. I always feel so calm upon entering the store, yes there is a presence there occasionally makes me feel like there are eyes on me, but I don't mind it I see it just as the guardians protecting and the magic of the place enchanting the entire store. Whether I make a purchase or not I always leave Present Moment with something...Just recently I went in for a new flute CD and was recommended a few very nice options. Always have what I need whether it be tincture, paolo santo, sage, puzzles, books, stones, singing bowls, tea everything. I am so grateful and blessed for this place's existence in Minneapolis.
