You really can't beat a charcoal roasted chicken when you have a hunger to fill and can't be bothered cooking. In my mind it is healthier than eating a burger for dinner. At least that is true until I walk in the front door and see all the chickeny roasted delights on offer on the menu and order up everything in sight. I usually hit Chickens on Queens when I'm hungover and in need of a not-too-unhealthy fast food fix. The shop uses chemical free La Ionica Poultry and serves chickens, chips, salads, roast potatoes and all of the usual sort of things you will find in a chicken shop. Other than the fact that the chips are particularly good, the rest of the food is simply good ordinary takeaway that you will find at any good chicken shop. What makes the shop particularly appealing though are the very friendly and helpful staff who will go out of their way to help customers, even though some of find English difficult. I have 2 young children and they usually tear around the shop getting into everything but the staff are particularly tolerant of them even when they try to take all of the straws and plastic cutlery. A staff member even brought our chips out to the car once when it was difficult for me to take the kids in. Inside the shop there is a television and numerous daily newspapers, giving customers something to do while waiting for their chicken and chips. A good, old style chicken shop!

This was my daughter's 18th birthday celebration dinner, and the kind manager approached our table, wished my daughter a happy birthday, and asked if she could get my daughter anything special. My daughter asked for apple cider--the first time she has ever tasted alcohol--which the manager gave her on the house. I told the manager that, unlike her friends, my daughter never drank before turning 18, and tonight at Belles, was her first drink. They do Lilydale chickens with the tastiest seasoning around. They are roasted on the rotisserie, so not overly greasy and they don't overcook them, so they're juicy as hell. They are a bit sparing on the stuffing, which is a shame, but apart from that I'd go so far as to say they're some of the best chooks in town. I've had occasions here where the service has been a bit rude, but not for a while. Maybe it's changed hands or something? The salads look a bit iffy, so I give them a wide berth, but if you just want a bloody good chicken for an easy dinner, Croxton Roosters is the place.

The staff have never been anything but friendly and welcoming on every visit and given there is always locals in attendance picking up their dinner, they are obviously doing something right and have definitely made a repeat customer out of me. I'd been here before; the adverts for Ionica Chicken attracted me to this place. It is also in the middle of the car park in Coburg's shopping district. The shop was clean and busy, with rows of chickens turning on their spits over the charcoal. There wasn't much room to sit down but most of the people were just sitting down waiting for their order to be completed, only one person was actually eating here. There was a good selection of salad and a generous portion of chips. Mission completed I went home to have lunch with the in-laws. Not much of the fine charcoal roast chicken survived the in-laws.

They are hidden down a lane at the rear of 357 Collins Street (enter from Flinders Lane) next to Huxtaburger. The shop look great, old fashioned mixed with some hipster and some greenery. The staff are really welcoming, friendly and courteous. I couldn't fault them on service. The food is fantastic. My friend and I ordered a 1/2 chicken pack that came with slaw, green salad, and chips. It was a huge chopping board piled with food. The salads were really tasty and would help with the guilt and shame if I had any. The gravy is on the salty side though, some would find it too salty. The chicken. It's damn delicious. Skin is perfect with the charcoal flavours, juicy, the flesh even has flavour. Probably the best rotisserie chicken I've had.
