I live in Storrs and when I saw the rating that this specific store was getting I was taken aback. 1. This is NOT a full sized PriceChopper store. For that you would have to go out to Vernon. They will not have the selection of a full sized store (like the local Big Y or Stop&Shop or even PriceRite) 2. I can tell you for a FACT that the prices are pretty even with either of the local Big Y stores. There are several items that I get on a weekly basis that are less expensive than the local Big Y. 3. I LOVE the people working in the Pharmacy. They are great, have real personalities, and are a joy to interact with. I have moved all of my prescriptions to the Pharmacy here, they are so much better than CVS. 3a. Every time I have ever stopped an employee to ask where I might find something, that person stopped what they were doing and then TOOK ME TO THE ITEM. none of this... pointing down the aisle and saying "its down there on the right somewhere". Once when they couldn't find it they paged the grocery manager and stayed with me until I had an answer. 3b. Every time I have used the regular checkout here I have been asked if I would need any help taking my groceries out to my car. Never had that happen at any other store in the area. 4. Because it is a smaller store they will only stock items that sell often (its called increased turns), they don't want anything sitting on the shelves too long. So if you are looking for a niche item, call first. 5. The Deli and food counter offer may options that are very reasonably priced. Even the fresh sushi is priced the same as I have seen in all of the other stores. BUT, and this is a big one, THEY WILL LET YOU CUSTOMIZE YOUR SANDWICH/SUB. I went into the Mansfield Big Y and asked for an italian, but without salami. Was told "no substitutions". I asked to 'build my own sub' instead and was told 'Not an option'. Guess who doesn't get subs from Big Y? That's right... this guy. 6. Someone mentioned that the carts won't accommodate baby seats. Not sure where they were, because I took my grandson into this store (as an infant) and locked his car seat carrier into the full sized carts here. In addition, now that he is 4 and wants to help with shopping, he LOVES the tiny carts with the (Shopper in training) flag. I am in this store 2-3 times per week and am glad to have it in Storrs. As with any retail establishment there will be items that are priced higher than other stores but also there will be some good deals. You just need to look. read more

This market is as nice as a Whole Foods Store, staff were helpful and everything was spotless. The Fried Chicken was the most extraordinary we have ever had. Saw a dog sniffing food intensely including the prepared food such as sushi, and when I told a staff member they said as long as the dog is not licking it. The dog was sniffing every food in its path and the owner didn't seem to care. I wouldn't buy any preprepared meals from here unless random dogs you don't know sniffing your food is your thing. read more

Does anybody work here?? I came here to get some quick things. I needed help in the seafood department, there was nobody there. I went up to the customer service desk, there was nobody there. I went looking for some items in the produce department the one person that was there could not help me find what I needed. Not happy with this place today! Girl at the service desk said the managers were all in a meeting?? At the customer's expense?? I left my cart with a few perishable things in it by the seafood dept. Left and went down to Big Y. Lobster on sale. They don't have any out so I ask the gentleman in the meat department. I guess I bothered him because he wasn't very friendly. Was told they were our and he didn't know when they would be in. So I go to the front to ask for a rain check. Cashier tells me customer service opens at 7:00. Last I knew customer service was always open when a customer was in front of you. I'm sure a manager could have assisted me. Like any good cheerleader, Price Chopper came out ready, peppy, and aggressive at its Storrs Center opening today. Looking past the artificially low prices on select products to draw customers in -- as well as (full disclosure) the free package of blueberry muffins I got for being one of the first 300 customers at the store -- there are a couple of things I can confidently say about Price Chopper: (1) It's proclaims its convenience loud and clear: Price Chopper was one of the most anticipated venues to open up at Storrs Center, second only to the Oaks on the Square apartments themselves (and perhaps also the UConn Health Center branch). And for good reason too -- With the closing of Grand Union on Route 44, the closest mainstream grocery stores were the Big Y's in Tolland and Mansfield. Now that Price Chopper is up-and-running -- 24 hours a day, no less -- grocery shopping in Storrs just got easier (Big Y can't be happy). Not to mention the fully functioning Starbucks inside and the free WiFi. But as we all know, there's no such thing as a free lunch. I'd be surprised if, with such amenities and the prime real estate location, prices didn't start creeping up soon. (2) It's beautiful: The store is quite the sight to see, and the presence of Starbucks and the 2nd floor cafe seating area just adds to the aura. I'd say it rivals Whole Foods for aesthetic design. (3) It's going to be a fierce competitor: Any company brave enough to invest the loads of money it takes to open up at Storrs Center is going to have to prove itself to potential customers by pitching something that's going to stick. And boy, has it. Price Chopper is going after four unique shopping populations: (a) Coupon Clippers -- Price Chopper has one of the most competitive coupon policies of any store in the area, including doubling manufacturers coupons at $0.99 face value or less. Moreover, they match competitor's coupons and even have a kiosk at the storefront at which you can print coupons. (b) Low-Price Seekers -- Price Chopper is just a little bit cheaper than Big Y, meaning that with its convenience, shoppers will likely find it cheaper to buy at Price Chopper than the next closest grocery store. (c) Health Nuts -- Price Chopper has a larger selection of "natural" goods than most grocery stores in the area, including a significant collection of organic produce. Furthermore, they have partnered with Chiappetti Meats to offer a broad selection of "humanely raised" meats. Health- and environmentally-conscious shoppers no longer have to make as many trips to West Hartford for their Whole Foods or Trader Joe's fix. (d) Gas Rewards Enthusiasts -- Like Stop & Shop (and to an extent Big Y), Price Chopper has partnered with a gas station company to offer gas rewards. Price Chopper's partner in crime is Sunoco...which just happened to have conveniently bought out the Public America station on 195 and 44, a mere 2 miles away. Coincidence? I think not! Only time will tell if Price Chopper is going to be the next wallet drain at Storrs Center or the best thing to open in Storrs in years. Today while at Price Chopper, my friend was scolded by the rudest employee working the self checkout area. My other friend and I had just finished checking out our items while our third friend was finishing up grabbing some items in an aisle. Right after we finished checking out our third friend joined us to purchase her items and the worker yelled at her saying she cut the line and she can't do whatever she wants and needs to "wait in line like everyone else" (there was barely a line) but she did not cut, as she was with us and just forgot to grab a few items. Horrible customer service. Check cashing card expired and when I tried renew, customer service couldn't renew. When they called the main customer service number, the employees were told they can't renew without calling "finance". This was NOT due to any issue pertaining to account status, income, credit, etc. Far too cumbersome and inconvenient to even consider doing. Will shop at Big Y from now on. No issues with check and loyalty cards with Big Y and far better selection of products overall. Not to mention a better designed and more spacious parking lot that isn't crammed into such a small space. read more

Normally I like to get a southwest salad for dinner. Every time I've gone in the past few months, the salad hasn't had the designated "lime vinaigrette" dressing. I am so grateful to have this store in our town. Working within the constraints of a smaller than normal space and a large population that disappears in the summer, I think they do a very good job of stocking the basics, including a reasonable selection of fruits and vegetables. Prices are very reasonable, and the staff are friendly. I see a lot of people complaining about what seem to me to be one time events. I suspect they were not here during the many years when we had NOWHERE to shop in Storrs. read more

Price Chopper has been a blessing to the Storrs community. I have had a wonderful experience there and while I shop at many other local stores as well, I keep returning to PC for meats, produce and other natural food products. The staff there have gone out of their way to add products if they can when requested and I have always been treated with great respect. I particularly love that they have a Starbucks kiosk in the store, which makes shopping much more fun. read more

One thing that Price Copper has going for it is that there is almost no competition. As the only grocery store in Storrs, it is the only option for UConn students without a car. Even for students with a car, many will choose to go to Price Chopper out of convenience. The next closest grocery stores are the Big Y's in Tolland and Mansfield, which are each about a 15 minute drive. Although I am very thankful to have a close-by option when I need to grab a few groceries and don't feel like driving very far, I have to say that I am disappointed in Price Chopper. First off the produce section is small and doesn't always have the freshest items. They have the basics, but sometimes there will be an item I'm looking for that they won't have. This is actually a theme for many departments within the store. The prices are also on the higher side, which I suppose they can get away with considering the lack of local competitors. Price Chopper does seem to have a decent health food selection considering the size of the store. Other positive things about the store include the Starbucks inside and the gas rewards program. I usually try to make a trip to Big Y in Tolland at least every other week though, as it seems to have the best selection in the area. I will not stop going to Price Chopper because I'm a typical college student and often pick convenience over other factors. I also was at UConn before having any grocery store on-campus, so again, I am thankful that it's here! read more

I visited a Price Chopper in Storrs, CT fir the first time and found it to be an okay experience. The clerk was friendly but overloaded my bags so one of them tore in my driveway and my groceries fell out. After she packed all my $180 of groceries she mentioned that she had overloaded the groceries in the bag. What? I will stick with Big Y in Tolland which is a fantastic store and packs my groceries properly and skip Price Chopper. Price Chopper is not worth a visit! read more
