I wanted tell people not to buy Big Y's party wings. They claim that there are wingettes or flats and drumettes ( I looked up the names online ) in the package. Don't assume that they took a whole chicken wing and cut it in to the separate pieces so that everyone could have a choice. If you thought that you would be wrong. I have never seen another company like Purdue etc. package their party wings this way. As you can see in my photos there is only one flat. My flat loving friends and family will be disappointed. Big Y managers unfortunately have a reputation for being curt and talking down to customers -Tolland,Mansfield & possibly other locations , on a weekly basis. This attitude is unprofessional and does not endear customers to the store. Even when corporate visits the stores, they act and present themselves as if their only concern is making more money. Big Y is the superstore of grocery in and around Storrs Mansfield Connecticut. I usually go to the Big Y near my Uncle's when I stay with him. This occasion I stayed with my Cousin and her family so we did our shopping at this location. These stores are beautiful and clean. My daughter and I realize how we miss shopping in a grocery with wide isles and plenty of choices for various products. If I lived here I'm sure I'd learn my way around the store. Every isle has new varieties to try. In the city I run from store to store for sales and variety. One thing I noticed is this location is rated as higher cost than the other Big Y in the area. I did see a lot of merchandise that was just as expensive as in NYC. I'm sure you have to pay the price to have such a huge amount of stock on hand. I recommend Big Y if you visit this area. If you move here get the rewards card. My cousin earns points and gets sales price with her card. I just bought bread and it wasn't on sale. I'm going to check the price here in the city to see if Pepperidge Farms charges more or the same as Connecticut. My Jewish Dark Pumpernickel was $3.99 for a small loaf. I'm still trying to finish eating it! Very fresh and delicious. I didn't see the Bread Alone Bread in the stores. That's one problem, some New York Companies may not distribute that far away. When I asked for a lb of slab bacon I ended up with a bunch of odd sized and shaped slices. When I mentioned this to the meat clerk he took two small pieces old but that's all. The customer ahead of me got even slices right off the slab. Will not go back again. read more

This place can get really busy during the week during the day. We usually go an hour before closing time and it's almost empty, which is how I like to shop! Shopping on Monday's and Tuesday's we've noticed they tend to be out of a lot of things but they're usually fully stocked later in the week especially on the weekends. Check your produce, you should do this every where not just Big Y. The staff at all Big Ys I've noticed are friendly and willing to help. They all seem to know where everything is! This franchise of grocery store is my favorite to shop bc of the small town feel. Amazing fresh flowers are always in season at Big Y and their take away chickens are SO juicy and save me tons of time when I need to make dinner in a hurry! read more

If you are black or a person of color, DO NOT SHOP at THIS big y location. During my pre-thanksgiving shopping experience, I was met with customers and staff which both seemed equally unwelcoming. I continued shopping nonetheless because it was one day before thanksgiving and the store was on my way home. While in self-checkout I had a cashier consistently hover near my self-checkout register mostly assuming I'd steal. The hovering was annoying and uncomfortable so I quickly scanned my items and left. I do not shop here unless I have to---which is rare--so for me to barely shop at this big y and still have an unfit experience is not okay considering it is 2023 and race is still a big issue in these "small towns". The pros and cons of Big Y. Very much on the fence. Big Y has plenty of positives, but also lacks in comparison to some other area supermarkets. Let's discuss their haves and have nots. The good: Big Y has an increasing selection overall of food, drinks, home care products and even a pharmacy. They've also gotten better about carrying more natural and organic options over the years. The service is usually quite friendly and the store has a more hometown feel than their rivals, Stop & Shop. They also have random Buy 1 Get 2 free deals that are quite the steal. The not-so good: Big Y stopped having self-checkout lines several years ago. I never understood that. Their prices are mediocre and their frequent shopper program is not very good. The silver and gold coins sound like a neat idea, but what's the point? The silver coin only gives you a slight discount on some obscure items. It's usually like 50 cents off of a loaf of bread or something else that you probably don't need. Good luck getting the ridiculously rare gold coin. In that case, maybe you get that loaf of bread for free. I come here to browse and see what they have, but I usually prefer Stop & Shop, as their prices are consistently lower than Big Y. Sometimes Big Y will have a few good finds, but I rarely walk out of there spending more than $10-15. read more

Visiting from out of town and staying at the nearby Best Western my wife and I needed a few items for the night and drive home the next day. Needing help with the Almond Butter machine as well as the price, associate Dan was helpful and polite in attending to our need as well as Mayvil (correct name) at the courtesy counter with the Big Y discount on items purchased. Went the next day, lower rating after finding the cucumbers squishy, organic greens high priced and being a union man, finding out it's a non union shop. read more

I think the stores and employees are doing a fine job. Too bad, they are harnessed by the upper management. Big "Y" has gone digital. Why, the other systems worked fine. Now it doesn't work at all. Do you really know the demographics of your shoppers? We are old and just wanna leave things alone. Does big Y know that 74% of the fully disposable money comes from people 60 and older. It used to be you click on an item in the flyer and it would load to a list that you printed out. Not anymore. you click on an item and nothing happens. So the fool that created this mess thinks that it would be easier to go digital. Maybe if you knew what you were doing. This is ridiculous. I have shopped exclusively at Big "Y since 1989. I even fill my prescriptions there. Not any more. You just lost 4 customers. Many more to come. I called customer service twice and the head cashier that was posing at the manager didn't know how to use it. The second put me on hold without my permission. after 10 minutes I hung up. I will call the corporate office tomorrow. Hope this changes your company's policy. Sorry to see you go, but you just made shopping a real hassle. Shameful. Trying to order a pizza requires immense amounts of patience at this Big Y location. I had to be connected 4 times before someone in the department finally picked and then the employee was extremely curt with zero-customer service skills. I can say that this is a nice store. It is clean, and most things are available when I do go. I've been shopping at this store every week for the last 2 years. I do make a big purchase every week, when I get to the cashier and see an associate helping bag the customer ahead of me, they see my cart and instantly leave and go to another line. I don't mind because I like to bag my own groceries but I do take notice in who is helpful & who's not. read more

Me along with my family have been going here for years. We've never had any problems with them and the employees are always polite. Never had any bad food or other products from here. A kind employee once offered a sample of the new chicken bacon ranch pizza to my mom and dad and we always get that here now and it is different every time but is always great quality and taste. read more

I love Big Y. I have loved Big Y for a long time now. They have quality products, stand behind their stuff, and have great sales if you can hit it just right. I usually only go there for sale stuff and for their meat. I am willing to pay more for better quality food, too. Since I bake a lot, I don't usually buy their bakery. But I do like to check out their markdowns and items that are off season/in the get rid of it piles along the ends of the aisles. I like the fact that I can get my knives sharpened there for FREE. And that when I tell the butcher, "I would ilke to have my lamb cubes in one inch sized pieces" he does exactly what I ask for him to do, save me tons of time in my own kitchen! There is a learning curve here when it comes to shopping. The better I know a store's layout, the quicker I am in and out and don't succumb to impulse buys. I'll shop at Big Y in the days ahead. I have a major love-hate relationship with this store. Big Y, like many of its chain grocery companions, offers a great selection of goods and has a number of items on sale each week that go for great prices. Sadly, this advertisement of sale items is simply a ploy to get you to go in and do all your shopping there, including buying their non-sale, high-priced items. It is well-known that Big Y is the most expensive traditional grocery store in the area. So, why do I love them? Because I can play their game and buy only their on-sale items. Stick a doubled-value coupon on top of their sales, and I'm saving a ton of money on food. (If there's anything else I need that not on sale at Big Y, I stick with Aldi and Price Rite, both 5-10 minutes away.) As to why I hate them, it's because it's mutual: Big Y hates its customers. No, really they do. They will do anything and everything to suck as much profit out of you as feasibly possible. I once tried to return a non-perishable item after a couple of months. Even though I understand that Big Y has a limit on returns after a certain amount of time has past, I felt the suspicious eye-glares from the customer service agent -- along with the emphatic "I have to confirm with the manager" statement -- was unnecesary to verify whether I could return the item or not. That was a mild incident, though, compared to many other issues I've run into at Big Y including: * Pricing products higher than what is listed in their weekly circular...and then defending their pricing by pointing to the disclaimer in the circular that states "not responsible for misprints". (This happens all the time.) * Placing similar-looking, not-on-sale products next to on-sale products, promoting the possibility that customers accidentally purchase the incorrect product. * Being incredibly tricky in their display of on-sale products. As a single example, every time a specific brand of bread goes on a "Buy One, Get One Free" special, if a certain product of that brand is cheaper than all the other products of that brand, they will NOT place the cheaper product on the aisle-end displays. * Giving the impression that they thought I was lying when I said that I forgot a product at the store and that I wanted to come back and pick it up. (To their SLIGHT defense, the cashier hadn't reported the item being forgotten.) * Promoting that with the purchase of 4 boxes of cereal that I would get a coupon for a free gallon of milk...then after not getting a coupon, being told that the free gallon was automatically loaded onto my shopper's loyalty card...and then after using my loyalty card and still not getting my free gallon, having to go to customer service to get it resolved. I can't even imagine how many other people, who didn't check their receipts, were ripped off by this. * My coupons ringing up incorrectly and the cashiers not catching it until I brought it up. In all, I see Big Y as an evil I have to bypass in order to get the goods that I want at the prices I want. Yet, it has become frustratingly necessary for me to check my receipt every time I go shopping there to make sure no "mistake" has been made. This differs so drastically from Aldi, which not only has an incredibly loyal consumer base but also holds to a policy of giving you ALL the incorrectly-priced products your purchased for FREE if you catch the mistake. read more

My friend took me shopping at Big Y Supermarket in Mansfield, CT and I was using a driving cart due to a back injury I encountered from an auto accident. I am disabled. When leaving the store unable to walk, the cashier refused to allow me to take the cart beyond the security poles located at the door. My friend drove my van directly outside the door due to not being able to walk. 'Could not' walk at all when leaving. The cashier refused over and over not allowing me to drive the cart outside to the van (bagger could have escorted and perhaps 'helped'). After first set of doors, I began crying and screaming outloud from the excrutiating pain. My friend could hardly keep me standing and moving. Both the cashier and the bagger stood and 'watched', did not assist us, get assistance or call an ambulance. I 'can not' believe how two Big Y employees could just stand and 'watch' someone in the sever pain that I was obviously in and do NOTHING! If Paul D'Amour was alive today, he would be appauld! I 'was' once a proud member of the Big Y Family and am 'ashamed' for what thier employees did! The only way I can explain it (as I did to those I spoke to at Big Y) is like having someone wack you in the lower back with a baseball bat and a twisting a knife. The manager of the store called me and "appologized" for what had happened and explained to me about how the manufacturer doesn't recommend thier carts being used outside of the store. She further said that someone could have gotten me a 'chair' (what kind? A office chair on wheels?) Obviously, she felt the cashier did nothing 'wrong'. I'm sorry but appology 'not' accepted. I called the main office and asked to speak to the now owner, Charlie D'Amour, I got a woman instead. (A secretary?) I explained to her what transpired and she told me to "calm down and talk rasionable" and calling me "sweet-heart". That's easier said than done especially when I just felt that I was kicked to the curb like trash. I'll admit I was crying and extremely upset but honestly felt that she was talking to me as though I was emotionally challenged, especially when she made the comment "You're in your home, you're safe." She made comments about the store manager "...is the best, best store manager" and "goes above and beyond". She too acted that 'nothing wrong was really done'. She informed me that the store manager had the night off, So who was in charge? What happened to someone called an 'assistant manager' or did that person have the night off too? She asked me "What do you want us to do?" I think that anyone in the situation I was in would be feeling the same way I am right now. If I saw someone in the condition I was in, I would have assisted in any way possible ( I have and do so even to this day if I can). I would have allowed the person to take the cart directly outside the doors and would have had someone assist them also if I was unable to. That is just common sense and courtesy. I am praying that this gets attention because I feel 'no one' should 'ever' be treated this way. I didn't ask to be disabled and I certainly didn't ask to be treated with such disrespect as I was. Every day I have to hold my head up and swallow back pain and tears so no one knows how I feel inside. My life has been destroyed by an auto accident and is further destroyed by people such as this who just don't seem to care. When the woman at the main office asked me "What do you want us to do?" , I honestly don't know. What can you do? What can be done? Try and 'justify' what was done and how I was treated as okay? That because the cashier was ignorrant in the proper actions to take that 'speaking to him' makes it okay? Why not use this line of thinking in every business? Then no one needs to take responsibility. Then saying "I appologize" fixes everything. Pose this situation to other disabled people and ask them if they would feel or act any differently. Just noticed some of you thought this was funny. Let me take a couple of swings at your back till your on the ground crying. When you get up, I'll hit you again and 'don't' think you'll get any sleep... I'll keep swinging. You should be thanking God this didn't happen to you! read more

We recently moved to the area and found Big Y by default when Stop & Shop was on strike. This is my go to grocery store. The team is always friendly and helpful, the selection has what I'm looking for, and the flowers and produce are fresh. Yes I understand the some of the prices are a little higher than other markets in the area, I am ok with that for the service I receive there. Also, I find that the Big Y card can save a pretty significant amount. I asked my husband to pick up something to grill this weekend. He went, spoke with the butcher, and came home with 3 awesome porterhouses at half price. Let me tell you they were gone by the end of the night and grilled up beautifully. read more
