This Big Y branch used to be ok, now not so much. They are SUPER expensive (but that's Big Y in general). the Deli always has a long line. they always have 2-3 people working, and have like 6 slicing machines, but they only ever use 1 and each employer has to wait for the other employees to finish whatever they're slicing to help you. It takes forever every time. Very often, they are completely out of numerous items (produce, butcher shop products, bakery products, etc.). Finally, their new A.I. self checkout system is a huge pain. at my most recent visit, the employee watching the self checkouts, had to intervene 3 separate times, including an override at the end where the system thought I was stealing items that I had clearly scanned. Save yourself time, money, and frustration and just go to Stop & Shop or Aldi. read more

Holy cow! One single customer taking 17 minutes (so far) to fill an insta cart order while the cashier hand wraps almost every item. Why do they not have their own aisle? It's now 20 minutes, should have just abandoned our cart. Just kill me. read more

As a grocery store, the prices here is slightly higher than stop and shop. I stopped by to pick up lunch. In general I found their cooked fish items the best. Fish and chips was my favorite. Buffalo chicken panini was ok. Clam chowder was good. I also took home some ready to cook items. Bang bang code fillet was my favorite among them. Ready to cook Indian food was my least favorite. One of Big Y's first World Class Markets to open in the state of Connecticut 25 years ago. This supermarket has everything you want whatever's on the go or for all the cooking at home. Most of these products you find in aisles have great deals (LOW Prices!). During the winter months, Paczki doughnuts are sold exclusively at their stores. They're so popular (and so good; bought those at the other World Class Market last week and they tasted fresh) that they may be sold out after a short time. This is one of the grocery stores where we spend money on food. Get cashiers!!!!! Always short on help. Yesterday I walked out without my produce because I was sick of waiting! Lines are out in the isle, customers with full carts trying to get done with only 3 cashiers. No cash lead or frt end Mgr present to help. Nobody called to jump on to get customers helped. This post is for people to be aware and to contact the STORE DIRECTOR as indicated by Store Manager Bree if the following situation happens to you as well: This store is my neighborhood grocery store so I frequent it often, sometimes multiple times a day. However, during lunchtime some "racist" people show up and bully minorities by getting in the way on purpose, threateningly moving towards us in aisles that have plenty of room for two people, not giving space to walk, or threateningly staring. They may not be from the neighborhood and seem to be a lunch break crowd. I was born and raised in CT, so I remember the 80s racism. This is worse because adults are regularly doing it. I wish there was something that could be done about this because it is wrong l, intrusive and deters me from going during lunch. I went to get milk today at around 5:45pm. There was milk spilled on floor. One older gentleman was helping out other older customers in getting milk. He had a fat free milk in his hand which those customers didn't want and I said I want that. He completely ignored me so I just went ahead and took one. He was so rude and behaved so bad in front of other customer that he asked me not to go which is a lie he never did. He was too busy helping those customers. If you want people to not go in when milk is spilled , put up a board and say don't go and attend to all customers don't just one. Racism much!!!! Audacity to behave rudely with me!!! For what!! I have a sick family member at home for which I just needed milk. And it's festival day for Indians. Do you even have decency to respect all culture and all age. It is after a while that i stepped into Big Y for shopping. As clean and convenient this store is, the prices at Big Y are definitely not favorable when you have stores like Shop Rite, Price Rite, and Walmart that are selling fresh vegetables and fruits like Big Y. The only advantage that Big Y has over other stores is the quality of things at the bakery, I find the bakery here to be much better than the rest of the stores. Also, these days Big Y has a live kitchen where they make sandwiches and wraps and also sushi (which is absolutely delicious). They have decent sales here, but I cannot get past the long lines. All the time. You can't just stop in and grab one or two things and get out quickly. I would shop here more often if they would staff the registers more efficiently. One highlight of visits is a gentleman who works in the parking lot collecting carriages. I did a light weekly shop here this week. Boy, did I treat myself like royalty. Since i had the day off, i stopped by the hot and cold prepared food depts to pick up lunch. Slightly pricier than your average grocery store, you have to be a bit careful going here. However, you can find some amazing deals, especially if you get one of the BIG Y Cards (guaranteed to save you money, so get one if you go here). This is the only place I've ever seen have a buy one get one on frozen shrimp (great by the way). The produce has been well stocked every time I've been here. That means, with some patience, you can find some really fresh stuff here. The staff here ranges from incredibly knowledgable and friendly to down right rude... but I've complained, and gotten genuine appologies and an improvement in service the next few times, so kudos for not just ignoring the problems. read more

The United Bank Branch was Excellent, The Sandwich Shop was Great, The Pizza Shop was Excellent, The Grocery Aisles was Great, The Cashiers was Very Good, The Staff was Very Good, The Cafe was Great, The Big Y Pharmacy was Great, The Customer Service was Very Good, The Bathrooms was Very Good, The Prices was Great, The Foods was Great, The Drinks was Very Good, The Little Y Kids Club was OK but Kids Stuff, The Location was Excellent and then, The Express Savings Club Card was Great. My Favorite parts are The United Bank (Big Y Branch) -- used to be Rockville Bank, The Sandwich and Pizza Shop, Big Y Pharmacy, and The Big Y Cafe because it was the best for our community from the family. read more

While visiting the Hartford area on business I had the pleasure of shopping for the week at Big Y while staying at the local ESA. I found the store to be bright and very well stocked with everything I needed for my stay. The prices where comparable to our Kroger in Atlanta with many of the same name brand. The staff was friendly and eager to answer all my questions. Not sure why some reviews had negative remarks as I found my experience to be what I would expect from a big box grocery store. read more

I usuall get a Stromboli and they taste great. today I order one and my coworker pick it up it was burnt on the top and raw in the middle they put a pound of garlic and forgot the the Spinach. I called costumer service and they said I need to bring it in and they can make a new one I tried to explain I don't have the time today to bring it back because my lunch break is over and I can come tomorrow , they where not understanding at all. I had no lunch today no refund or a free Stromboli for another time. I go often to big y for lunch and I am very disappointed on how they treated this situation. Not impressed. I came to Big Y today for the first time in a while since I had some Manchester meetings close by. I lived down the street for 3 years and recall this store being my main destination for grocery shopping - mainly because it was convenient and I didn't feel like driving longer than three minutes. Now, living and shopping elsewhere for over a year, I can safely give a resounding MEH. Karin D's review is spot on - the store is filled with so much packaged junk and doesn't have many of the healthier/organic options I usually stock up on. My neighborhood independent grocer has better options. It's probably 1/16th of the size of big Y but I can come out with everything from almond milk and gluten free cereal to fish sauce and homemade kimchi. Not to mention - of all the grocery chains (except health food stores), Big Y is the most expensive one I've come across. Because I shopped there way too often in the past, I have so many dang silver coins that serve as their coupons. Anyone want 'em? If you're going to shop at Big Y, at least take advantage of the coupons & coins! You'll save a pretty penny. Otherwise, unless I'm in a time crunch and it's the only grocery nearby, I opt to stay away. read more

This has got to be one of the worst supermarkets ever. I have heard that they were 'better' a few decades ago, but they have definitely 'jumped the Shark' and should just go away. They call themselves a "World CLASS Market".... BUT...yet they have almost no imports (btw, Shaw's and Highland Park market are great for imports!) The couple of times I've made the mistake of stopping at this store (only becuz i was in the area shopping for something else) I went in hoping to be wowed by their "WORLD CLASS" status.......but I could not even find what I was looking for. I am a very frequent shopper at Big Y! I love the selection, the fresh food and especially the bakery. They have the best donuts ever. Seriously if you buy Dunkin's donuts you are truly missing out on a taste experience! BigY gives out gold coins for every 500$ and you can get so much with those coins, like 10 cents off a gallon of gas, a huge discount on your shopping. I can't like this place enough! read more

I only hit up Big Y if they are running a really great sale. Otherwise everything is extremely overpriced. Also noted is that every time they have broccoli on sale, it is going bad. Maybe that's why they put it on sale? In terms of aesthetics, cleanliness, lighting, all of the grocery stores around here seem to be on the same level (except for Shop Rite which is far worse). Check out the bakery though. Their European layer cakes are to die for. read more

I'm always impressed with this place because they have tons of stuff. And the deli/fast food area has tons of stuff-made to order grinders, friend chicken, pizza, etc--but be sure to order at least a half hour before closing because they clean up early--I learned that the hard way when I arrived 10 min before they were scheduled to close and they didn't have any pizza left....although if I went to a pizza restaurant with 10 min left they would make me one...funny how that works. This place has good sales but its one of those bigger places that charges a premium for the non-sale items to make up for all their services. However, I think its time to consider putting some of that money towards a bathroom renovation, there was feces on the wall in the ladies room. Big Y World Class Market - Grocery Near Me - Manchester, Connecticut

I am not that big of a fan. I shop here because it is the closest thing to my home. If Stop and Shop or Shop Rite were closer I'd go there. Big Y "sale" prices are not the best. Typically it's the Big Y store brand that's the cheap sale and the name brand that is still too high (cheaper at the other stores). But they do have some good buy 1 get 2 free deals. Wednesdays are usually the meat "sales". Where they offer $2 off meat that expires the next day. But even with the 2 off it's still not always the best prices. But it can be. I do appreciate it sometimes. And if you get very lucky, there chicken breast can be $1.90 something per pound for a 6 pack. But again, Stop and Shop has that deal every week or two. My biggest problem with their store is the checkout. I've hardly ever seen more than 6 registers open at a time. Even during the busiest part of the day. The lines get very long, often times going into the aisles. The manager needs to be willing to spend more money to have more employees on shift. Also, Big Y seems to be living in the past by not offering self checkout. If I go in just for a gallon of milk, I should not have to wait 10 minutes in line. Not their "express: line, is hardly express. Express is 8-10 item or less. Not 15, that's a cart full. But if this is close come here. If any of the other chains are closer go there. read more

This is a grocery store that works hard at making everyone's experience a positive one, from start till end....I know this because I often see Corporate Management assessing the store , department by department. So, I know Corporate does care! One area I'd like to address is their "World Class Employee" logo, which is a sign located above the entrances. I do expect to have a world class experience especially with their employees, no matter if they are a front end supervisor, cashier, produce clerk or florist manager. On many occasions, I felt I was not all welcomed by :The Produce Manager at The Big Y in Manchester, as well as the Front End Supervisor, and Florist Manager. You know, sometimes a little smile goes a long way as you walk past them, or a nicer reaction to my question about where a product is in produce would go a long way in how customers should be treated. I mean if you really don't like working at Big Y, then there's the door!!! I do have to say on the other hand, the majority of their employees are very nice and caring!!! If these people can have a little more "World Class" in them, it would definitely make Big Y stand above all other grocery stores in terms of customer and employee relationships. read more

We love Big Y and all of the food options especially the sushi, sandwich and pizza area. This review is not on the quality of the options and food but the miserable workers behind the counters. This was the fourth time going to big Y JUST to get a sandwich for lunch because they're so delicious, but we tend to get an attitude every time we go there while asking to order a sandwich. With an attitude we are told multiple sandwich toppings are not available and we are looked at as if we are bothering the people behind the counter by just ordering a sandwich. We just left there now and asked to order a sandwich and the lady with an attitude said we would have to wait because online orders seem to take precedent over someone standing there at the counter asking for one sandwich. She Didn't even look up or acknowledge us as if we were annoying her. This makes us dread coming to order food at this Big Y. If you're unhappy with what you're doing, please don't take it out on customers who are trying to spend money at your store. read more

Ever since moving to the area a few months this ago, I've tried Big Y numerous times. Every.single.time the employees have been miserable. Today took the cake though. Everyone is stressed with the recent crisis. I get it, but some things there is no excuse for. I ran in and found some Clorox wipes. Score! There was no sign for a limit so I grabbed 2, since that's usually been the limit elsewhere. I got in line at one of two opened registers. The cashier repeatedly informed me that she had to clean her register before she could take me. I told her no problem, I was holding my three items anyway. This really irritated her, clearly she did not want me to be in her line. I waited because, again, there were two registers opened. She rolled her eyes and reminded me that I could wait if I wanted to but she had to clean her register. Then she saw my wipes and told me the limit was 1, I said, "sorry, there wasn't a sign." Again, an eye roll and her response was, "I'm just telling you what I'm told." And I was just telling you there was no sign so you could avoid his miserable conversation all day long with customers who bring up 2. Okay, well now this is awkward. She then told me to go to customer service. Okay, great...maybe they won't be so miserable. I even put my extra wipes away before going there and informed other customers who were over there that they could only grab 1 wipe, you know, since there's no sign. Went over to customer service. I'm the only person there and the cashier just continued to ignore me. After about a minute of standing there I said, "I was told to come to you?" He rolled his eyes (are you sensing a theme, yet?), rang up my two items without so much of a, "hello", and then told me my total. Yeah, that was by far the most painful errand I've run in a while thanks to the miserable employees here. I won't be back.... unless the employees learn basic manners. read more

It seems that this Big Y store has been going downhill. We have been strong supporters of this store, but as of late, they are really falling short. We have seen a management turnover a couple times in the last few years. The store doesn't look as nice as it once did; not the effort there once was, put into store displays and upkeep. For the most part, the employees remain great, though. The real kicker and the prompting for writing this review came today, however. We purchased some pre-cooked bacon. There were 3 boxes (along with others of a different variety) in a stand alone display. I thought it odd that each of the 3 boxes had a corner torn out, but didn't pay it any mind. I didn't check the date on the boxes. We purchased 2 of the 3 boxes. When my husband went to make the turkey club sandwiches today and looked at the boxes, they had an expiration date of MARCH - over 2 MONTHS AGO!!! Hence, the torn corners on the boxes. Obviously, Big Y knew they were expired, hence the torn corners, but put them on display to sell, anyway!! We immediately brought them back to Customer Service and were greeted with disinterest and attitude from the employee working the desk. Nothing like, "OH, I'm so sorry, or Let me get a manager, or That's not right!" Nope! Just bad attitude, as if it was our fault that we were returning expired bacon! Bad customer service, all the way around. We left and didn't say anything. But this still bothered us. If Big Y is doing this with bacon, what else are they doing? So...we are seriously considering shopping elsewhere in the future. There are too many choices out there for shopping. Big Y used to set itself apart, so it was a no brainer to want to shop here. Not so much anymore. It's sad. It used to be a great store to shop at and I always would defend the store when my friends would complain about their high prices. No more. Hope they wake up before they become the next Shaw's, because it certainly seems like they are travelling down that road. read more

I stopped by the other day to turn in some Big Y coins for movie passes, and I must say that the lady at the customer service desk had a little too much attitude. I am not sure how they operate the bakery section without any staff. I had to wait for 20 minutes to get a cake that was in the display since there was no staff manning the counter. One person in the inner section bakery was on the phone for over 20 minutes putting in an order? Are you serious? Keeping a customer waiting is not how you do business. Last weekend we went to big Y for our weekly grocery shopping -- and I won't be going back any time soon. It's bad enough that the aisles are so narrow that two carts can barely squeeze by one another if both are parallel and in lane. What made this truly an unpleasant experience was the racket -- every few minutes, some yahoo would get on the microphone to shout at the top of his lungs about some special price on some item. "Baby Back Ribs!" he shouted. The assault on the eardrums was truly painful -- and other shoppers looked as disgusted as we were. It was too unconfortable to stay -- we finally abandoned our cart and went to Stop and Shop up the road. A week later, I'm still angry at the experience. Whatever happened to pleasant pop music, or even more pleasant silence? A trip to the grocery store should NOT be an assault on the customer. read more
