You know when you are watching Netflix you come across a martial arts movie with an all Asian actors that speaks fluent English and who don't know martial arts. Well, instead of getting kung-fu, you get weird-fu. Man, there are so many cultural misappropriations, it is not even funny. This is how dominant culture sees Asians- "you all look alike" "you are all the same". For starters, signages. They got these 70's English Fonts mimicking Asian characters. And weird goofy sayings like "Wok with confidence" or "stretch your imagination ". It is so non-asian. I can see the designer did a quick a google of what asian culture is all about and just stuck it in. It demonstrates how little respect they have for the differences and nuances of every very different asian cultures there are. Any proud Asian will find the design of the place highly offensive and culturally insensitive. We walked around looking at various food, produce and prepped food area. Didn't find anything remotely competitively priced. The future is here and so are the prices. Expensive. We were asking ourselves who is the target market? Asians? You have two successful Korean grocery stores across the street : HNS and Hi-Mart. Then there is the Chinese Supermarket TNT in Coquitlam Centre and Lougheed who has none of these issues. Their key market will likely be the indifferent and price-proof non-asians. We capped our journey with their cooked offerings. We got the 2 meat combo with rice. We went with BBQ duck and pork. Let's just say the duck was so dry and salty, I don't think I had worse duck in all of GVRD. I rather drive all the way to Richmond's HK BBQ Master as they have exact same price. One is world renown, other is hot garbage. Then I had to have the silly idea of ordering a drink at their "Harmony Cafe". My god. Although there were three people ahead of me, it took forever. I chalked it up to newbies. Literally four pair of hands went into making the London Fog I ordered. The last guy was reading the manual while making it. After he was finished he went to wash dishes and left the drink on the table. Had to hail another staff to fulfill my order which included Portuguese Egg tarts. This took over twenty minutes. It was way too long. Overall, I understand this is a new business and a grand opening but shouldn't they have operations smoothed out prior to opening their doors? One star for the Portuguese Tart and another for the polite, albeit confused, staff. I will check back in a few months after their newness is ironed out, if I ever come back.

I went to check out the new Pricesmart Foods in North Burnaby during their opening week and managed to score some BOGO free bubble tea from the Harmony Cafe that's located there. One of the flavors I wanted wasn't available so I got a Lychee Lime slush in its place and Honeydew Smoothie for the second drink. Didn't think too much of the Lychee Lime slush, but the Honeydew smoothie was wonderful. The supermarket itself looks quite impressive upon first glance. They have many different stations offering different foods such as Dim Sum, Ramen, Teppanyaki, Sushi and Poke. I have to say though that while they have a lot of food to offer, it's heavy on the meat and not at all Vegetarian friendly. In that respect, I found the selection of foods quite disappointing. I'm Pescatarian myself, so I could get by with Sushi and Poke. However, I actually prefer to eat Vegetarian or even Vegan most of the time. Seafood is a last resort for me when I can't find Vegetarian or Vegan options that suit me.  I did find the bakery section quite attractive though. They had a lovely selection of mousse cakes for sale, in a variety of different flavors. Earl Grey Mousse cake and Blueberry Cheese Mousse cake were two of the flavors that caught my eye. There were some mini Portuguese Egg Tarts on sale so I bought some and brought them home to try. They were pretty good. Nothing to rave about, but for a supermarket...pretty good.  Overall, not too impressed with this place. If I happen to be in the area, I might consider stopping by once in awhile for a bubble tea or to check out the bakery section. Can't see myself doing everyday groceries here though.  Service: Good Parking: Plentiful and free Location: 9899 Austin Rd., Burnaby

Clean store, a lot of promo going on. There is a Harmony Cafe inside this store, great atmosphere clean and nice music. A lot of choices like Bubble Tea, croissants and cakes, some Chinese style Dim Sum and Western salads.

2 for $8 samosas... Every South Asian is cringing so hard that they broke their jaw.

There are also beauty products here. Depending on the time of day and if there are any holidays, the store can be quite loud and crowded. Sometimes it's also hard to get parking spots. When on sale, the veggies are quite cheap and sometimes there are discounts on the meat too. Chicken drumsticks sometimes only cost about 98 cents per lb which is great. Compared to smaller stores, the snacks here are very cheap and the selection is huge. Recently the cooked food section turned from 2 or 3 items and rice and soup to charging by weight, which made it quite a lot more expensive. I used to choose the 2-item one alot before as it was only around $12 for a full meal, but now half the plate is around the same price. I personally like the bubble tea section fhe most as it's really cheap at around $5-6 for a drink. It's not the greatest tasting thing ever but great value for the price. Previously the cashiers all seemed to speak Chinese only (Mandarin or Cantonese), but I noticed that recently there's more people that speak English. People who shop here are mostly Asian though. They have a membership program where people can earn points, and then redeem them for rewards later. The rewards are pretty good, from snacks to tote bags to kitchen appliances.

From aisle staff to hot foods counter to checkout everyone works hard but stops to help customers when they ask for assistance. I've witness this by pretending I don't speak Chinese and asked about discount on a dish where the tag was missed as needed to be sold end of day, the lady quickly grabs the nearest coworker that spoke English to help understand my question. She could have just said sorry no English. Which is very typical of Asians when they don't feel comfortable interacting in their second language. Koodo for the effort

They have interesting drinks and I often find fresh foods for lower than I might find them in a big box chain stores. They sell Blackball dessert drinks here but they've gone up slightly in price from what they used to be, so I decided to just grab a bottled drink that was on sale. I picked up something called Coconut Shake. Also came home with a lemon for 79 cents. Places like Superstore may have larger selection but their prices can be ridiculously high. I like these smaller markets that carry fresh foods for signficantly less than big box retailers. Service was good too. I accidentally left my keychain (with keys attached) at the cashier register. I was so happy and relieved when the lady from the cash register ran out and told me that I'd left my keys. So glad that my keys were noticed very quickly and that the lady was able to catch me before I ended up straying too far.

Parking is plentiful in the lot in front of the building. The inside is definitely bare bones and on the smaller side. However, it was full of customers. They're doing something right. They have Korean snacks and produce. Special mention to their dedicated kimchi and ready to eat food section, which have items like tteokbokki (starch roles in sauce) and kimbap. Oh so tasty. Another thing worth mentioning - they have sashimi grade fish, and as of the time of writing, it is much cheaper than T&T. My only real complaint is that the checkout area is set up rather poorly. I just saw a pile of people by the counters and assumed I was in the lineup. Turns out the lineup actually goes down the aisle that is closest to the wall. Pro tip. This place is definitely on my radar now. Will be back more often to empty my wallet. Recommended.

We already passed up a few other locations and I remembered this place, I haven't been here in years, so I didn't know what to expect. Most people who live in the Lower Mainland might not come to this place, as it literally is in the (as my friend use to say) "armpit" of Canada. From the amount of beggers, crack whores, drug dealers, drug takers, let's just say this is not the rainbow and unicorns neighbourhood of town. I found parking a block up, and once we exited the car, a person asked us if we had any change.... yes... this is a stones throw away from Hastings and Main! We entered, and the guy working here was unloading, and putting things away, as well as setting up the front display of food items, and my dear went off in her world to look for items. This place is spacious, no overloading of shelves, no narrow aisles, no short store, this place is pretty wide, and pretty long. We started on the left side, walking down their open refrigerated section, you see very clean, and packaged vegetables. Anything from Thai chili's, Thai basil, mini limes, coriander, green onions, bean sprouts, just to name a few, everything had their own packaging where you could see what your buying, and everything was, as I said, clean! Through the aisles we noticed stuff like shrimp paste, sections of Sriracha sauce, fish sauce, cane sugar, brown sugar, cans of bamboo, powdered soup broth for your favorite pho dishes, laksa sauces, a variety of different rice noodles, even labelled by the width of the noodle. This place is a specialty store, and one I wouldn't hesitate on sending anyone too, sure you have to actually get out of your car, or go down there with public transit, and open your eyes to a different part of society. Sometimes part of the journey of making your dish at home, is the journey less spoken, that of where the hell you got your ingredients. The words, "you can't believe where I went to get this stuff" may come out of your mouth the next time you actually decide to prepare a Thai, Viet, Cambodian, Malaysian, Indonesian, etc..., dish... but if your working through some cookbook that is telling you things you need for a particular dish that you have no clue where to get cause your normal supermarket wouldn't have a clue what it is.... you maybe surprised here by finding it. The one thing we were looking for.. which they didn't have was freshly package pho noodles..... as all of the noodles we saw were dry, can't win them all!

Being Thai- speaks for itself now. I should know where to shop right? Right?…read more This is the only bona fide place to get That ingredients if you want that authentic green curry with real Thai eggplant (so round and cute, definitely not long and skinny which will give you soggy eggplant) or the hard to find actual Kaffir limes (not just the leaves) for your tom yum soup. Pick up some "real" oyster sauce for your Pad Bai Graprow, and the grapow leaves too (Thai basil). There's so much more, from frozen desserts, great Jasmine rice, rice noodles, and on and on and on.. spices. BUT, caveat, its in a sketch neighbourhood on East Hastings, druggies, street merchants (which are not necessarily sketch), homeless folks (also not necessarily sketch). So you might feel a bit out of place if you plan on sliding up in your Range Rover or Mercedes. But that's just a feeling, nothing bad will happen. It's not the prettiest of places, it's a big warehouse kind of space, no cute labels and fun signs, just the facts and prices. Ladies who work there, super nice, super helpful. A lot of things are kept in the back so use your big girl voice and ask for things if you can't find it. Delivery day seems to be Friday, so the weekend is a good time to go in. Prices are so good, I don't know why anyone and I mean ANYONE would buy Thai ingredients in the Asian food aisle in the supermarket. Case and point, fish sauce should never, ever cost more than $2 for the largest size bottle. EVER. You're welcome. Happy Thai shopping, cooking and eating :)
